Personal History
Nicholas was born in Georgia to Wyatt Samson III, an Engineer, and Naomi Samson, a Doctor, on Wyatt's dad's farm. From an early age, Nicholas was taught everything he could learn about Engineering, though never got into it. Nicholas eventually grew to look more into Security and Tactics as the organization known as the United Earth Starfleet grew and expanded. He eventually went to a four year college, graduating near the top of his class before entering Starfleet's Officer Academy.
There, he met two people who would grow very close to him. Allen Walker, a fellow Security/Tactics Cadet, and Angela Wuthers, a waitress at a nearby restaurant. Walker was Nicholas' roommate, and they quickly became best friends. Nicholas regularly went to the restaurant when able, and began a relationship with Angela. Shortly after graduating, he asked Angela to marry him. They had a girl, Mary Beth, shortly before Nicholas' first true assignment. Their marriage lasted only a few years before they divorced, Angela feeling she couldn't keep going the long periods of time that Nicholas would be gone.
His friendship with Allen continued on, as they shared their first assignment together. It was during this time that they were sent to take care of a dispute. During what turned into a hostile situation, Nicholas and Allen were given orders to advance to another point. Nicholas wanted to follow his gut because he knew it to be a bad idea, but okay'ed the order anyway, resulting in Allen's death in the ensuing firefight.
The event caused Nicholas to always follow his gut. This caused him to clash many times with superior officers, and he quickly grew a reputation as a Rogue, but more than one time, it saved his crew. This lead to eventual promotions, as he began serving on board some of the first Warp-Five capable NX vessels. Again, he clashed with his CO, who was extremely "by-the-books" before being offered the position of Commanding Officer another ship.
