Personal History

Sam spent his early years on a small ship with his parents in the distant fringes of Federation territory or disputed space. There, his parents worked as traders and treasure hunters. Until he was about eight years old, he spent his time on the ship and wasn’t terribly involved with their work. He had spotty memories of being shown how the ship worked, as much as a parent would explain to a child. One night, he was jolted awake by the sound of a blast and the ship’s shaking. He dad came into the room, got him out of bed, put him in his oversized jacket, stuffed him in an escape pod and launched it. Through the small window, Sam saw the ship and another behind it leap to warp. It was some time before the boy realized what had happened.

Enter Napeth and T’shir, a Vulcan couple who had their own courier business out in these regions of space. They picked up the escape pod after Sam had long since screamed himself to sleep. They briefly search the area for his parents’ ship but could not detour too far from their route. And Sam couldn’t make up his mind about whether he had been abandoned by them for their convenience or his safety. Nonetheless, he and his “adoptive” parents came to count one another as their own. They never went into it in detail with Sam, but he had the impression that they had fled Vulcan. Perhaps to be together? He wasn’t sure, they behaved more or less like Vulcans would, but they never spoke much of their culture nor did they ever try to instill its values in Sam.

He spent the next years of manning systems on the ship, learning how to jury-rig everything from wiring to plasma conduits and manning weapons on the occasions where a delivery job went south. He watched as Napeth and T’shir would calmly and rationally handle any problem or setback. After an encounter with a Federation ship, the only one he ever saw, he became intensely curious. He had never seen such a pristine ship. All the ships out here were cobbled together, lumpy and brown or black. The shining, smooth Starfleet frigate looked like it could move through butter. They had been searching for a criminal, Sam and his parents didn’t know anything. For the first time, he began asking his parents about their homeworld, about the Federation and the Terran homeworld, Earth. He had never actually set foot on a planet before, spending all his time on ships or orbital installations. Their answers were analytical, sterile, and not good enough for the human teenager. Eventually they encouraged him to travel there for himself. They arranged for transport and after an anxious, antsy trip, he arrived on Earth. It was unlike anything he had ever seen. A star’s light diffused in an atmosphere to form a blue sky, plants, solid ground that didn’t rumble with engines, and the cleanest, most pristine tech he’d ever interacted with. To say nothing of the fact that he didn’t need to purchase anything at all and could simply eat whatever and whenever he felt like it.

Eventually the wonder passed, as all things do, and he decided that he would join Starfleet. He was more comfortable in space, the Starfleet vessels offered the the chance to bring the best parts of Earth with him. He never knew his last name, and so he registered with the last name, Sakan, Vulcan for “boy,” which his adoptive father called him ever since finding him. While he was more than capable when it came to ship’s operations, he had never been formally schooled, so he took two years at an Academy prep school to learn the theory behind all of the things he intuitively knew about space travel. Afterwards he passed his entrance exam and made it through the Academy. He was never a top-tier student, he classmates had learned all the math and science in their formative years. Furthermore, after years of speaking Vulcan, it took some time for him to be accustomed again to speaking the language he learned first. However, his professors usually recognized his resourcefulness and unorthodox solutions to problems and helped him where they could. He maintained contact with his Vulcan parents and they expressed encouragement. Despite his greater experience in the engineering fields, he decided to specialize in the Tactical areas of the ship. He had never been on a ship whose weapons were legitimately capable of defending itself, and he felt that was an area he should become learn.

Finally, after graduation, he was assigned to the USS Sheridan. And, finally, he returned to the only life he had known for so many years. Aboard a ship in the great expanse.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Tactical Systems.
Academy Minor(s): Astrophysics
Hobbies and Pastimes: He has always maintained his interest in building things. He has numerous model starships, some from sets, some build from scratch. Some even worked and could fly via remote. He constantly tinkers with them or thinks up new ones.
Short-Term Goals: To “see how the other half live” in space. To learn all he can about how things are in the central regions of the Federation or the other major powers, and to become a valued member of his crew. To put his unique approach to problems to use.
Long-Term Goals: Though he wasn’t sure if he had it in him, he often dreamed of being in command of one of those gleaming ships like the one that inspired him those years ago. He also sought to make his parents proud, to the extent that Vulcans could be, and while it wasn’t a preoccupation of his, maybe figure out whatever became of his biological family.
Personality: Sam is friendly and always excited for new experiences. He is proud of what he does, but has always struggled with the formality of “civilized” society and can seem rather backwater at times.
Sense of Humor: He has inherited the dry, deadpan humor of his adoptive parents. Although he never knew if they were trying to be funny.
Phobias: While he can obviously deal with being enclosed in a starship, even since his time in the escape pod he has been antsy about very close spaces.
Likes: Learning, especially about new technology and the way it works.
Dislikes: As awed as he is by Federation technology, part of him dislikes how automatic and hands-off some of it can be.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: When people casually act as though everyone in more remote space are lawless brigands, pirates, and smugglers. He had encountered several shady characters and organizations out there, sure, but he knew several others that simply made a living just like everybody else.
Bad Habits or Vices: Sam has a bad habit of rambling about minutiae that others do not care about.
Achievements: Being able to get through the Academy without having any formal schooling until a two year prep school.
Disappointments: He was never able to shake the thought that perhaps his original parents simply didn’t want him around anymore.
Illnesses: None of note.
Strengths: Sam excels at quickly deciphering how something works and the best way to handle it. He has a way of getting the most out of a machine or device.
Weaknesses: The formalities and etiquette involved in both military procedures and in interpersonal interactions are a bit lost on him.
Fears: He fears what might become of Napeth and T’shir. He never was aware of how dangerous it was until he experienced the ultimate security of Earth. He had not visited Vulcan yet, but he assumed it was similar and wished that they would return home.
Prejudices: He has had minimal contact with others throughout his life. So he was very susceptible to picking up prejudices he learned from other people. Furthermore, he is unable to fathom that people might have struggles in the utopian main worlds.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans, his father’s bomber jacket
Pets: None at present.
Friends: K’vik, a Vulcan that also attended the Academy with Sam. They were similarly interested in learning. He served as a source for knowledge about the Vulcan homeworld, and Sam taught him about life in the remote regions.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Undoubtedly the time he spent adrift in the escape pod. He’s not sure how long he was in it, and it couldn’t have been too terribly long. However, it felt like an eternity of fear, despair, and anger.
Best Time: Helping to run Napeth and T’shir’s ship. He loved being depended on to find the source of a problem, purchase a part they needed, or fooling a pursuer using tricks before scaring them off with the ship’s meager weaponry.
Most Crucial Experience: Seeing the Starfleet frigate glide into view near that backwater outpost. It’s gleaming white hull, enormous warp engines, and massive deflector opened his eyes to a world he scarcely knew existed and filled him with curiosity like he had never known.
Role Model: Though he has since learned it to be fairly typical of Vulcans, his adoptive parents’ calm, rational approach to any obstacle was something he always admired. His spotty memories of his biological parents seemed capable, but more high-strung. He often strived to keep himself calm in the face of adversity.
