Personal History
Born while her Betazoid parents were touring the Middle East on Earth, Nira was given the middle name of Parisa in honor of the Afghan nurse that gave birth to her, who was also Nira’s great-aunt, and was given the name of Said in that she was still in the womb when her mother remarried, her first husband Asal Atruk having disappeared a year before. Nira was left on Earth with her Aunty Parisa because duty called for her parents, but within a fortnight, they were killed when Orion Pirates destroyed their ship. Beautiful as she was, she was always a tomboy, a rebel, always getting into trouble or letting trouble find her, but she was always inquisitive and insightful, sharing her human father’s fascination with the writings of mystery, from the writings of Arthur Conan Doyle to Agatha Christie, to the adventures of Holmes and the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, these works influenced her to pursue justice and solve mysteries.
Nira had been in attendance at a school in Halat al Bahrani, where she can easily see the skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi on a good day, but she had always felt unwelcome among the locals since her telepathy manifested itself upon reaching adolescence. It began when she reported on some of her fellow students for cheating, just from sensing her intentions. As such, the bullies began hounding her, spreading rumors that Nira could potentially be a cheater in school herself. Things came to a head when the news that Nira was telepathic reached the father of one of the bullies, who was known for shady activities. Being biased against telepaths, especially as they could potentially glean and reveal his criminal activities, he spread rumors about the “Betazoid witchling” who could potentially control minds as well as read them. They spread like wildfire among the island, eventually getting far-fetched, and as such, they forced Nira to lead an isolated living. Eventually, Nira realized she would have to run away, as Aunty Parisa no longer had the strength to support her, coming on in age. The best place for Nira to go would be Starfleet Academy, once she reached the minimum age. Her time came no sooner than expected, because within a fortnight of Nira’s birthday, reaching the minimum age to join the Academy, Aunty Parisa had died. Nira stayed long enough for the funeral before she took off for the Academy.
Nira was grateful to have joined the Academy when she did. Not only was it a good chance that she would meet more Betazoids at the Academy, among other telepaths, there was also a good chance for her to make friends. She was still a bit of an introvert, though, and was a little cautious, especially with her telepathy. The last thing she needed was an accusation of cheating. But if she found anybody at the Academy who was also telepathic, Betazoid or otherwise, she hoped that she'd find an equal, and perhaps someone to help her keep her telepathy in check. But in any case, Nira never felt happy as she did at the Academy. She especially appreciated the green and the environment around the Academy.
When her telepathy and empathy manifested, Nira was suddenly uncomfortable. She began seeking isolation, because she was so uncomfortable in the company of others at that time. As such, she was lonely. The emotions around her particularly bothered her; she once came down with a hangover-level headache just from passing a daycare center.
Nira was assigned first to Tactical, assuming it would lead her to work with Starfleet Intelligence, but she was assigned to a post she had expected least, and thus trained for least: the helm. Nira never considered herself a helmswoman, skipping over that and choosing to focus on the other aspects of Tactical, but her constantly being assigned the helm made Nira feel her talents were wasted, as she had learned to use her skills to determine truths and such. When the Sheridan was involved in a battle with the Borg in which telepaths were incapacitated, Nira was in a coma for days.
Her first use of her skills came at Deneb IV, when she uncovered traitors among the crew trying to give the ship to the Ferengi, as well as tracking down the buyers on the planet below. Her skills useful at last, Nira transferred to the Callisto where she started over in Security and trained.
Unfortunately, her getting accustomed to the Callisto was short-lived, for within a few weeks after transferring, she joined a security detatchment to a diplomatic party negotiating with Ferengi. She and her departmental head, Shiarra Sothrick, had come accross particularly suspicious Ferengi and followed them, but were discovered and Nira held hostage by a Bajoran pirate leading the Ferengi. Nira was shot by him in the shoulder with his disruptor, but when Nira tried to fight back, the action caused her arm to be ripped asunder. Were it not for the Ferengi medical personnel, Nira would've bled to death with the loss of her arm.
During all this, the Callisto was destroyed by marauding Cardassians. Nira was among the nine members of the crew remaining, but the loss of her arm had scarred her mentally. The Cardassians imprisoned the crew in quarters until they were transported to Starbase 204, where Nira began full treatment and was given a new arm that was cloned. But despite getting a new arm, Nira was fearful it would drop off, and never bothered to use it, even in the rehabilitation and the extended leave before assigned to the Geronimo.
Nira was so scarred by the loss of her arm, she was broken mentally. She had no home to go to since Aunt Parisa died, so she spent her leave in the Burj Khalifa, her favorite building. Dozens of times, Nira had contemplated throwing herself off the roof in her broken mental state; she didn't feel this bad since the Sheridan, where she had been so unhappy, she considered literally blowing herself out the airlock. But something inside her prevented her from doing so, and instead spent her extended leave wallowing in misery.
She only broke out of her mental condition of regarding herself as a broken cripple when she discovered Shiarra Sothrick, her mentor and her best friend, had also been assigned to the Geronimo, along with meeting her husband, the First Office. The dismemberment was still vivid in her memory, and Nira made it a point to check with the medical staff to see how her arm was holding up.
Her first assignment on the Geronimo was to lead an away team to check out an automated cargo ship with a repair crew, and she helped to save them from some mechanical insects that almost destroyed it and Geronimo. It was her first successful mission, but what followed would gradually decrease her happiness.
She found herself in many situations where she didn't feel useful or felt like a caged animal, first in investigating a Klingon outpost, then getting trapped during a party when some temporal energy hit the starbase they were having their party. Nira tried to go to another party to make up for the one she had, only to be kidnapped by Orion pirates, along with two other crewmembers. Working together, they escaped the slavers, hijacked their yacht and returned to Federation space.
Then came the Vanguard incident, when the Geronimo, while escorting some trading ships, discovered a missing Federation starship, the Vanguard. Upon its investigating, the Vanguard's captain, driven insane from circumstances wherein the crew of the Vanguard destroyed themselves, switched places with the crew and took the Geronimo. Nira fell susceptible to the psychosis that affected the crew, ending up having her voice unusable when a fellow crewmember almost strangled her, and then the psychosis rendered her unconscious.
The experience on the Vanguard became more scarring than the destruction of the Callisto, and what hurt Nira worse was that, given the departure of Captain Adaran from the Geronimo and hir First Officer Sothrick taking command, Nira was acting First Officer around the Vanguard incident and she felt she failed the crew. She had felt even more broken; were it not for the extremely sparse friends she had, among other situations, Nira would've left Starfleet or, broken as she was, would've carried out the suicide she had been contemplating.
Her final assignment on the Geronimo took her to Gravesworld, in investigating lead poisoning. Amidst this, Nira and a fellow security officer confronted a whole mob, in an unethical way, so as to protect the medical officers and the leaders of the Gravesworld colony. The experience of facing a mob with only a security officer to help her made Nira finally decide the Geronimo was not for her, and when she was offered a place on the USS Titania, she accepted at once, and had reworked herself to become a better leading Security officer, given the circumstance of once again becoming Sothrick's deputy.
