Personal History

Verelan was born into a somewhat prestigious family, as her father Riov Terrh Sahen distinguished himself during the First General War while he commanded the RIS Vencus. Despite the war result being inconclusive, the Vencus managed to score some victories and survive while a decent amount of their fellow brethren did not. The years after the war allowed him to be noticed by the Senate and put on a shortlist for promotion to Enriov.

With the change of the century, Terrh took some leave with his family to figure out if accepting the promotion when it came would be the right call for him. With Verelan being a curious type, her father arranged for them to go off-world, just outside of Romulan space. Not only did it satisfy his daughter, but Terrh believed it would give him some distance from the enemies he no doubt knew would be trying to amass.

As the family enjoyed their time together, Terrh received word from his loyal First Officer that he was needed back in Romulan space as a decision had been reached in regards to his future. Taking a warp shuttle, Terrh left the Vencus in orbit as he believed he wouldn’t be gone long and that his family was safe. When her father left, it became clear that some of his crew at the top weren’t precisely loyal to him.

Only being 7, Verelan wasn’t suspicious when her father’s First Officer beamed down with a weapon in his hand. She also didn’t have any way of knowing, at the time, that it wasn’t a Romulan disruptor. In actuality, it was an older model Star Fleet phaser. Terrh’s First Officer had believed him to have grown soft, and that the loss of his family would either kick him back into action or break him enough so that he would assume command of the Vencus with help from his allies in the fleet. Plus, the fact that he could make it seem like the Federation was the cause of his family’s death would make it that much better.

Seeing her mother murdered before her eyes, was enough to send Verelan running in the opposite direction from her would-be assassins. Only a child, she knew if she didn’t run the same thing would end up happening to her as well. Verelan kept running until she ended up collapsing, not knowing whether or not death was going to come for her as well. Luckily, since the Vencus had sent out a distress call on a Federation frequency to lure a Star Fleet ship to blame the murder on, they didn’t anticipate a ship arriving sooner than expected.

The USS Oxford arrived on the scene, and there wasn’t much time wasted in deploying a rescue team to the surface. Verelan was the only survivor that was discovered by Lieutenant Clayton Wood. Despite her being a Romulan, all Clayton saw was a child in need and received authorization from his captain to have her beamed to their Sickbay. Once she regained consciousness, she was scared at first and didn’t want to talk to anyone. Thanks to the universal translator, Lieutenant Wood was eventually able to inform Verelan that he was the one who saved her.

Verelan was grateful, but she wasn’t about to show it to the group of strangers she saw before her. She just told them she wanted to go back home to her father. It took some time, but eventually Clayton was able to get who her dad was. The Oxford captain recognized the name of Vecnus, and was initially uneasy. However, he knew returning Verelan to her family might be able to get some goodwill in with the Romulan Star Empire. So they sought out communications with the Vencus.

The only problem was when the managed to get through, Terrh hadn’t returned, and his First Officer was still in charge until then. Verelan recognized him and tried to hide behind Clayton so that her mother’s murderer couldn’t see her. The Lieutenant immediately caught that and pulled her aside to find out what she remembered about the man before them on the viewer. Wood informed his captain, and they realized if they handed Verelan over to the Vecnus she would probably be as good as dead.

Verelan was given a choice if she wanted to go with the Vecnus or not, while Oxford had muted their communications. Knowing her dad’s First Officer had killed her mother, and Clayton had done nothing but saved her, she clung tightly to her future adoptive father. The Oxford commander took that as a sign of an asylum request and didn’t inform the Vecnus of Verelan being aboard, to save her life. Unfortunately, it played into the Vecnus First Officer’s plans.

Not having anywhere else to go, Verelan was raised by Clayton, and she gained a new mom. She also, unfortunately, gained a new sister. Verelan had been an only child, and the one thing she and Darlene could agree on was that they didn’t like each other, at least at first. Darlene felt as though her parents were spending too much time with the Romulan freak they were treating like a daughter and didn’t like sharing them.

As Verelan became more independent, firstly, by learning to speak Federation Standard, Darlene grew less bitter as her parents didn’t fuss with her new sister that much. While her adoptive sister began to come over, the other kids weren’t so easy. There were times Verelan tried to hide who she was. She couldn’t do much to disguise her brow ridges, but she did grow out her hair to hide her pointed ears.

It wasn’t all that successful as she grew up, but through her primary education years, Verelan did manage to pick up a friend or two. During this time, Verelan also adopted a more human nickname of “Vala”. This led to her being slightly more accepted, but it still took time for some people to come around. A wrinkle came about when her curiosity reemerged, and Verelan wanted to follow in her adoptive father’s, and somewhat her biological father as well, footsteps.

Verelan wanted to apply to Star Fleet, as she believed it would give her purpose and allow her to bridge a gap between the Empire and the Federation. Even her father wasn’t completely open to the idea, but only because he knew it would be a tough sell for the higher-ups. The only known Romulan serving in the fleet at the time was a Commander Imina Sevala, who was stationed as the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Gettysburg. With her reputation as a rule-breaker known to the admiralty, it didn’t seem likely that Verelan would be given a chance.

However, whether or not Commander Sevala had any influence of not, Verelan was given a chance to prove herself. While Commander Sevala only had to receive training for Star Fleet equipment and protocol, due to her initially having Imperial Service before she took part in the Medical Exchange Program, Verelan would be going the whole nine yards.

During her tenure at the Academy, Verelan grew an attachment to the security field in part because of her adoptive father. Her instructors were initially uneasy with this; however someone did remind them of a particular Klingon who was the first to take part in the Academy so many years ago. Able to prove herself, Verelan took pride in all the work she did.

With her graduation approaching, Verelan planned on being the best of her two worlds. The burning question she had was whether or not she’d be able to nudge the two powers together. Verelan was sure in her mind it was possible, but it would take an enormous amount of time. The only nagging feeling she had left was whether or not if she were able to return home would be how she would react to her mother’s killer. If he was still alive, would Verelan be willing to risk an interstellar incident to avenge her family, by pure emotion? Or would she follow the procedures of Star Fleet? She wasn’t entirely sure if following those principles at that moment would help her serve the Empire she wants to help, and a part of her hopes that the issue of avenging her mom doesn’t come up. At least, not right away.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security
Academy Minor(s): Federation Law and Law Enforcement
Hobbies and Pastimes: Since Verelan was usually isolated by the children that matched her age, she grew a liking of reading for fun and even taking an interest in holonovels of the same books when she was allowed some time in a holodeck.
Short-Term Goals: Verelan hopes to earn the respect of her fellow Star Fleet personnel where they don't see her being born a Romulan as a reason to instantly distrust her.
Long-Term Goals: One day, Verelan wants to be the bridge between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, similiar to how Ambassador Spock wanted to bring reuinification between the Romulans and Vulcans. Plus, she always wants to reuinte with her Romulan family one day.
Personality: Verelan has more of a straight to the point personality. She's trying to break out of her shell, but since she was young and always mistreated by her peers, there was no really a reason to be too friendly.
Sense of Humor: When Verelan does have a sense of humor, it's always noted as dry and not too funny.
Phobias: Most would assume Verelan was xenophobic, based on her being a Romulan. However, it is a misconception as she's willing to accept anyone that accepts her.
Likes: While it's changing, Verelan still like to be alone. The peace and quiet does her good, as she doesn't have to worry about anyone treating her differently. As she ages and matures, Verelan does want to change that part of herself and let other people into her life.
Dislikes: Verelan strongly dislikes anyone that treats her differently just because they see her as the enemy because she's Romulan.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Verelan is greatly peeved by anyone who treats someone horribly just because of their race and that they might be different.
Bad Habits or Vices: Verelan does have a bad habit of reverting back to being by herself. It's something she tries to change, but it's currently a work in progress.
Achievements: Entering Star Fleet Academy and proving that she deserved to be there, despite the fact that some, but not all, of the faculty didn't want her there.
Disappointments: At the moment. Verelan's only disappointment was that she didn't graduate number one in her Academy's class. She was pushing hard to prove herself, but didn't meet all the expectations and her pride is still wounded by the failure as she sees it.
Illnesses: Verelan suffered the standard illnesses that afflict Romulan children, however when she arrived on Earth her immune system wasn't particulary built up for a common cold. However, that didn't last too long as it was eventually treated.
Strengths: Verelan excels in hand-to-hand, partially due to her enhanced strength as a Romulan. However, her strength does have a downside in that sometimes she stops a little too late.
Weaknesses: Verelan's emotions tend to get the better of her, especially when someone is attacking her race and seeing her as an enemy. She will respond back, and sometimes it won't be kind.
Fears: Despite all her best intentions, Verelan fears that if she is to finally meet her father once again that he'll just see her as a traitor to their people due to her wanting to emulate the best of both the Federation and Romulan people.
Prejudices: Verelan is particulary prejudiced against anyone who can't see past her Romulan appearance. While she knows there isn't exactly love for the Romulans, she would at least expect the 'enlightened' Federation to be more understanding of a person at a personal level.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Since growing up on Earth, Verelan is quite satisfied to wear a comfortable blouse and a pair of jeans when not on duty.
Distinguishing Features: Amongst other Romulans, Verelan doesn't stand out that much. Although, since she hasn't been among her own people since she was a child her brow ridges are what usually distinguishes her, in a not-so-good way as most other see it.
Pets: None
Friends: Verelan's never had anyone she considered a best friend, especially since she moved to Earth. She managed to gain a friend or two while she resided on Earth, but they drifted apart while she was at the Academy.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Verelan's most painful experience was having to watch her mother be murdered right before her eyes. If it wasn't for her running away immediately, the next body to drop would've definately been hers.
Best Time: There hasn't been a time Verelan really sees as her best time ever. She's always been on the defensive and one day hope to change that for herself.
Most Crucial Experience: The most crucial experience for Verelan was being adopted by the Wood family. Clayton Wood took her in when she had no Romulan family left to go to, as she was in great fear of her father's First Officer.
Role Model: Verelan currently has two roles models. The first is Ambassador Spock for wanting to reunify the Vulcans and Romulans, something Verelan wants to emulate with the Federation and Romulan Empire. Her second role model is Captain Imina Sevala, who showed that it was possible for some in the Federation to see that some Romulans weren't the enemy and could thrive in Star Fleet, and subsequently the Federation.
