Personal History

Born in Tycho City, Luna Colony, Alexei is the second child of Svetlana and Vladimir Rustov, a Nurse and the Co-ordinator of the Luna Mining Operation respectively. The elder of a set of fraternal twins by 7 minutes, he has always looked out for his younger brother, and tried to steer him in the right direction. It has not always been easy however, as his brother has led what most would call a less than successful life. Currently he is serving out a 9 year sentence at the Federation Penal Colony, New Zealand, for Assault and Attempted Armed Robbery. He will be eligible for parole in 6 months.

During his childhood, Alexei always dreamed of a life amongst the stars, and so with his parents blessing, he applied and was accepted by Star Fleet Academy at the age of 18, where he double majored in General Systems Engineering and Warp Field Dynamics, with a strong minor in Tactical, specifically Starship Piloting. It was during a routine practical training scenario, just prior to his Phaser qualification assessment, that a Type II hand phaser overloaded and blew up in his face, severely injuring him to the point that reconstructive surgery was required on the left side of his face, and his left eye was replaced by an ocular implant. It was later discovered that the phaser had been modified by one of Alexei's classmates, with his prior knowledge. Both Cadets were reprimanded for such reckless behaviour, although for Alexei, the lesson was already painfully learned.

Upon successful rehabilitation he resumed his studies at the Academy, where, during his Kobayashi Maru exam, he crashed the entire simulator program by attempting to improvise an engineering solution to the problem through a very unorthodox series of computer commands and jury rigging, essentially tricking the computer running the simulation into fighting against itself. His instructors later admitted that his solution might theoretically have been successful. Upon graduating a respectable 5th in his class, Alexei was assigned to the USS Enterprise - E, now a training vessel used by recently graduated Midshipmen to hone their skills and further their training before receiving a full posting with the Fleet. Recently, his tour of duty on the Enterprise - E ended, and he received new orders to report for duty onboard the Flagship of the 1st Battle Group - the Federation Class Heavy Carrier, USS Enterprise CV-07. After a brief stint on-board, he was transferred to the Avenger Class Battle Cruiser, USS Gettysburg BC-1863 during the fleet reshuffle.

Personality: A no nonsense type, Alexei is proud of his accomplishments thus far and is a strictly by the book officer, ever since his accident at the Academy. He believes that it is his adherence to rules, regulations and his own sense of self discipline, which have made him the man, and the officer that he is today
Sense of Humor: When around people he works with, his sense of humor is somewhat dry, often appearing unintentionally condescending and somewhat sarcastic. He is a firm believer in the theory that business and pleasure should never be mixed, and so he has at best a “working relationship” with his colleagues. That is not to say that he has no friends however, and when around those that know him, he tends to open up a little more and thus his sense of humor is a little more relaxed and friendly
Phobias: Alexei has no phobias as such but is extremely wary of hand-held phasers
Likes: Most Russian foods, and of course vodka. Also has a certain fondness for Raktajino, acquired during shore leave on Starbase Alpha pending assignment to the Enterprise
Dislikes: Lack of discipline, Awkward social situations, Phasers
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Tardiness. Alexei is a firm believer in the principle that one should show up on time or not show up at all
Bad Habits or Vices: Alexei enjoys gambling, though he is by no means an addict. He will make wagers on anything that has an element of random chance. He understands however that such things can become an unhealthy obsession, and as such has taken appropriate measures to cut back. He does, however, still enjoy the odd flutter
Achievements: Graduating from Star Fleet Academy, Academy Racket-ball Junior Champion, Ressikan Flute First Chair in the Academy Orchestra
Disappointments: The official reprimand on his service jacket for the phaser incident. Alexei also feels a sense of disappointment that his brother did not follow a more productive path, feeling that he has somehow failed him. When he becomes eligible for parole, Alexei is determined to help him "straighten up and fly right"

Strengths: A confident man, and a quick thinker. His ability to think outside the box, allows him to offer unorthodox solutions to a given problem. A passionate speaker, he can often win people over to his way of thinking, whether it be intentional or not
Weaknesses: Can sometimes be quite vain and a bit arrogant, convinced that his, and only his way is the right way to do things
Fears: More than anything, Alexei fears failure, or being labelled as a failure. As such, he will often work "above and beyond" in order to avoid this

Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Rustic and fairly simple, Polo neck sweaters and jeans, etc. Prefers drab colours to anything more garish
Distinguishing Features: Ocular implant. His left eye was rendered useless after a phaser overloaded and exploded during a routine training session at the Academy. The left hand side of his face took the brunt of the resultant shrapnel and as such he bears several small scars on the left side of his face, mostly around his cheek and jawline. Although such scars could easily have been removed with a simple medical procedure, Alexei chose to have them heal naturally, and serve as a reminder that he should never rush blindly into a situation, without first thinking of the consequences
Pets: None
Friends: Jak Hobbes, whom Alexei met during his first year at the Academy. Jak was the person responsible for the modifications to Alexei's phaser that resulted in the overload, although Alexei does not hold him responsible for the injuries he sustained as he himself was also to blame for encouraging the modifications in the first place. The two remain firm friends

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Alexei's most painful experience was the weeks of rehabilitation he had to endure following his accident at the Academy, learning to co-ordinate his ocular implant to work in sync with his natural right eye. At times, he became highly frustrated, as he grappled with things, such as reading and writing, depth perception, and various other things that most people just accept as being simple
Best Time: Graduation from Star Fleet Academy and his subsequent prestigious (albeit short-lived) posting to the Flagship of the 1st Battle Group, USS Enterprise CV-07
Most Crucial Experience: Alexei would class his Kobayashi Maru test as his most crucial experience. He had heard the all the Academy legends, such as the Kobayashi Maru of Captain Kirk, which somewhat inspired him, during his own test. Utilising his ability to think outside the box, he reprogrammed the simulator fighting a three way "Mexican stand-off" between the Federation, the Romulan Star Empire, and the Cardassian Union, to instead have the Romulan Ships and those of the Cardassian Union fight amongst themselves. Unfortunately, his hasty programming managed to crash the simulation. Instead of being reprimanded however, he was praised for his lateral thinking, causing him to see it as a beneficial strength
Role Model: Alexei's role model is his father, Vladimir, who passed on to his son a passion for knowledge, and learning, which ultimately was a deciding factor in his applying to Star Fleet. After his accident, his father made an impassioned plea to him, imploring him not to give up his dream of being a Star Fleet Officer, to believe in himself and his abilities. It is mainly because of his fathers guidance that Alexei has grown into the man he is today
