This story takes place on board the USS Odin (CL-2512), a Zeus Classed Light Cruiser under the command of Captain Linda Orlanson. Launched hours before the Borg attack on the SOL system, they saw the beginning of the Borg return and the destruction of Star Base-1 happen before their very eyes.
Not practically new to Commanding a Vessel, Linda Orlanson takes her crew into the heat of the battle. When orders are officially given, things heat up for the Odin Crew.

Commander Linda Orlanson, sat in Ten Forward, ready to go meet her new crew. Having recently left the USS Amsterdam, she felt lost. She’d been in Star Fleet five years and was going through the ranks at an incredible rate. When she’d first graduated, she’d been assigned to USS Ramses. Stayed there one year, and then was reassigned to the Amsterdam as Chief Science Officer. As time went on she became First Officer, but now was moving on to better places. While she’d miss her friends from the Amsterdam, new friends and adventures awaited her on the USS Odin. The time to depart neared. She rose from her chair and left Ten Forward.
Making her way through the corridors of Star Base-1, she thought back to her years in Tokyo. Growing up there had made her the Strong, determined person she was.

Ray Linxwen arrived in the Observation Lounge of the Base. He noticed two other officers there. His mane was tied back, and he actually looked professional and like the Marine he was. “Hello there, I’m Ray Linxwen,” he greeted the two officers.
“Belrain’Tan, Glad to make your acquaintance Major.”
“I’m Valarie Ederson, A pleasure to meet you.”
Ray took a seat across from Valarie and waited patiently for the others to arrive.

Kyle walked in, and was surprised to see a Caitlian seated at the table. You don’t see many of them around.
“G’Day, I’m Kyle Flinders,” He noted an old friend of his from the academy, “Valerie, good to see you again.”
Valerie had been contemplating the point of this mission. No one had told them much. She looked up when Kyle spoke, “Kyle Flinders, What a surprise to see you here. It’s been a long time.” She offered him a seat beside her, and Kyle accepted.
“Do you think Hadden is coming?” Kyle asked, curious to see if their other friend was being reassigned with them.
“It’s quite possible, we’ll just have to see,” Valerie replied.

Garrett rushed out of his quarters, buttoning up his dress uniform jacket.

Admiral Beckett’s going to kill me if I’m late.

His blue hands fumbled along the buttons as he rushed through the corridors. He managed to get the last one done up as he reached the doors to the Lounge. He composed himself and walked in. He sighed with relief when he realised he wasn’t the last to arrive. "Greetings everyone. I don’t believe I’ve met anyone here. I’m Garrett Jacks.”

Linda took it calmly through the corridors. All she knew about the upcoming events was the name of the ship and that she was to be the Commanding Officer. She was eager to find out more. She entered the Observation Lounge and took a seat. She smiled at those already seated, “Greetings, I’m Linda Orlanson. Pleasure to meet you.” She looked around the group, her eyes stayed on Ray Linxwen though.
“Major, did you ever serve upon the Ramses?” She asked him curiously. She’d only ever served with one Caitlian, who just happened to be a Marine.
“Indeed I did Commander Orlanson. Science right?” He winked at her. He remembered the bustling young Ensign, who’d come on board with him. He’d never met her at the academy, but had spent a lot of time in the Science labs when they’d served together.
“Yes, Science. Ray Linxwen, right?”
He smiled, “Glad to see you remember Linda.”
Their conversation was interrupted when Elric Bladesemer walked in. “Eh, Hi. I’m Elric Bladesemer,” he said nervously as he took a seat.”
To finish off the team, another Officer in a blue uniform walked in. “Hadden!” exclaimed Valerie Ederson.
“Val, Kyle. Good to see you,” he smiled at his long time friends and turned to the other’s in the room, “Hadden McGowen, Pleasure to meet you all.” He sat down beside Kyle Flinders. “I see we’re all here. Now we wait for the Admiral I guess,” Linda said, after Hadden had taken a seat.
They waited in silence for a while. Not wanting to speak to long lost friends in case of excluding the others, or just too nervous to say anything. Finally, the tension in the room was broken when Admiral Beckett walked in. The group stood as he entered.
“Be seated,” They sat again, as the Admiral sat down at the head of the table, “I realise you all wounder what’s going on. You were all called here without being told much. So, now, I’ll move right along with the meeting.” He looked around at the selected group, happy with the officers that would be the senior staff of the fleet’s newest ship.
“I’m sure a few of you have heard of The USS Odin, The newest ship in the Home Fleet. Well, she needs a crew, and every crew needs a Senior Staff.”
They all stared at him, except for Linda Orlanson. She already knew that much. “Ray Linxwen, Front and Centre!” ordered Admiral Beckett. Ray stood and approached the Admiral, who stood from his seat, “You are here by Promoted to the Marine Commander of the USS Odin.” The group clapped. Ray took his seat again.

Marine Commander? It’s been my dream for a long time.

The Admiral wasted no time. “Valerie Ederson, Hadden McGowen, Front and Centre. The two friends stood and side by side walked up to the Admiral. “Valarie Ederson, You are here by promoted to Chief Science Officer of the USS Odin. Hadden McGowen, you are here by promoted to Chief Medical Officer of the USS Odin.”
Kyle smiled at his friends, and the others congratulated them as they sit down. “Garrett Jacks, Elric Bladesemer, Front and Centre.” The two stood and Elric straitened his uniform and followed Garett Jacks to the Admiral.
“Garrett Jacks, you are here by promoted to Chief Engineer of the USS Odin and Elric Bladesemer, you are here by promoted to Chief of Security of the USS Odin.”
Garrett smiled. He was very pleased with himself. He at down again and congratulated Elric on his promotion. The Admiral continued, “Kyle Flinders, Balrain’Tan, Front and Centre.”
Kyle made his way up, just like his friends had before him, and Balrain’Tan, followed. His cool Vulcan temperament showing. “Kyle Flinders, you are here by promoted to Chief Tactical Officer of the USS Odin.
Balrain’Tan, you are here by promoted to First Officer of the USS Odin. Take your seats.” All eyes fell upon Linda Orlanson. She was the only one not to be placed yet. Instead of ordering her to him, Admiral Beckett approached her. “Stand Commander.” Linda stood. She was quite a bit shorter then the Admiral, but not much intimidated her. Especially not tall men. He took out a shiny gold pip, and attatched it beside the three others she wore. “You are here by promoted to the rank of Captain and will be taking the place of Commanding Officer of the USS Odin,” Linda shook hands with the Admiral and took her seat. Admiral Beckett turned from her and took his own seat. “The rest of the crew will meet with you in space doc. Your orders will be sent to you as soon as you board the Odin. Unfortunately I don’t have time to go over them with you, as I have a wedding to officiate. Dismissed, Captain Orlanson, remain behind please.” Linda watched as the people who were now part of her crew, left the room. She remained in her set, and waited for the Admiral to speak again.
“Captain, the Romulans are closing in. We are sending you and the Odin to Romulus, to hopefully convince them to stop attacking. I know you and your crew are the best suited for this Mission. Good Luck.”
“Aye Sir. We’ll do our best.” Linda turned and left the Admiral.

The space doc was crowded when Linda entered. Belrain’Tan approached her. “Captain, when do we leave?” “Immediately, prepare to board,” Linda replied. Linda listened to the thoughts of her new crew. To find out what they thought of the situation at hand. “Department Heads, once we’re launched, meet in the observation lounge.” With that, everyone was beamed onboard the Odin. The crew departed to their various departments.

“H’Kan, aren’t you on the bridge?” “Yeah, where do you go Nelda?” H’Kan replied. “Barracks I guess, Oh, there’s my DH, I’ll ask.” Nelda’Rak said, as she turned away from H’Kan, “I’ll see you later.” “Ok, Qupla.” H’Kan turned away and headed towards another officer wearing the same uniform as him. “Hello there.” Helen jumped, “Oh Hello.” Klingon, oh brilliant. And I saw another one… “I’m H’Kan, and you might be?” “Helen, Helen Jenkins.” Helen put on a brave face, “You’re tactical too?” H’Kan nodded, “Yes, shall we get going?” “Ahh, yeah. Sure.” Helen turned and left the Transporter room with H’Kan at her heels. She walked fast, trying to put as much distance between them, but H’Kan kept up easily. “So what’s your specialty Ms. Jenkins?” “Helm, you?” “Tactical.”

Pelton headed straight to Sickbay, where he was to be working. He entered to find several officers there. He walked over to the officer who wore the Department Head’s uniform. “Pelton Hardfsen, reporting for duty sir.” Hadden looked up from the pad he was reading. “Ensign Harfdsen, stand at ease.” Scarletta noticed another officer enter Sickbay and came over to introduce herself. “Hey there, I’m Scarletta Ramonova, and you are?” “Oh, hello, I’m Pelton Hardfsen.” “Come, I’ll introduce you to the others,” Scarletta led Pelton over to a small group of medical personnel.

Linda walked onto the bridge. She was impressed to see everyone already at their stations. “Report?” she said plainly as she sat. “Take of in five minutes, Captain. We’re still waiting on clearance,” replied Yesica Kallen. “Very well.” Her crew was settling well, Linda felt. She smiled when she felt the presence of another Betazoid on the bridge, “Counsellor Loftsern, Welcome to the bridge.” Galiena looked shocked. Not by the fact the captain knew who she was, but that she never looked. What am I thinking. The only way she could’ve known, is if…she’s Betazoid like me… “Indeed I am. Please, take a seat,” Linda said, looking up at Galiena. “Why thank you Captain,” Galiena said, taking her seat on the left hand side of the captain. She looked over at the Vulcan, who was obviously the First officer, “You must be Belrain’Tan, a pleasure to meet you.” They were interrupted when Lieutenant Kallen spoke, “We have clearance to leave, Captain. We await your order.” The Command team, composed themselves, while everyone waited for Captain Orlanson to speak. “Take us out, Ensign,” She ordered. “Aye Ma’am,” replied Helen Jenkins. Seated at the Helm, her fingers worked their way across her console. The View screen showed the ship moving away from their docking point. Linda lent back in her chair. She was used to sitting where Belrain’Tan sat, but things change. She now sat in the middle. With a crew beneath her, for the whole time. With no need to hand the Command back to another Captain, which she’d done many times before aboard the USS Amsterdam. “We’re getting a Communiqué from HQ, Ma’am,” it was Yesica Kallen again. It seemed she was getting a full speed run today. “On screen, Lieutenant.” The view changed from Star Base-1 to Ramsus Benestad. “Greetings, Captain Orlanson. As you know, you are now assigned to Romulus. Your crew has a specialty for diplomacy, so Star Fleet Command believes that you are the perfect ship for the mission at hand-“ The message was interrupted when the ship rocked. “Report!” “Weapons fire Captain. I’m picking up three ships on sensors,” reported Granger, “Hang on, another two have appeared.” Attacked? Already… Linda thought. “Romulans?” “No, Ma’am…” Granger’s voice halted, “It’s…The Borg.” “Borg? Impossible. They haven’t been seen for years,” H’Kan called over the Chaos. Linda looked at the view screen, “On screen.” Sure enough, there were five Borg Wedges heading towards them. “They’re different. Not like the cubes we used to see,” Belrain’Tan said, he’d been a child during the former Borg wars and remembered them well. “They’re attacking the Base, three ships are departing and the Gettysburg is hailing us.” “Put them on,” Orlanson said, Standing from her chair. [USS Odin, This is Captain Daniel Wueste of the USS Gettysburg. What just happened, you saw it all.] Linda looked upon the face a of a familiar Captain. Although she’d never served with him, they’d met. “Captain Wueste, This is Captain Linda Orlanson. The Borg came out of sub-space, using some form of Transwarp Technology, Sir.” [I see, we’ll join you. Oh, and congratulations on your promotion and new crew, Linda.] “Thank you Sir. Congratulations on your wedding.” [Thank you. So why weren’t you there?] “We were launched during the ceremony. I’m very sorry I couldn’t make it. I’ll make it up to you some how.” The ship rocked again. “We’re under attack and the Base is under heavy fire, Captain.” “Return fire,” Linda ordered. The Gettysburg departed from it’s location to help attack the new threat. “Civilians are being boarded onto all ships besides the Gettysburg.” Linda turned and sat back in her command chair. “Tactical fire at will. Assist the Gettysburg to the best of your ability,” She ordered. “Aye Captain,” replied the over confident H’Kan. “Captain, we have a message from Admiral Beckett,” Yesica Kallen called. “On Screen.” [All Ships, this is Admiral Beckett. Due to the sudden Borg attacks, the Armageddon Directive has been enforced,] He paused, and then continued, [All Commanding Officers will find their orders in their Ready Rooms. Good luck, and Dismissed.] “Transmission cut.” Linda turned to Belrain’Tan, “Order a Senior Staff meeting, to be held in fifteen minutes. If I’m needed before then, I’ll be in my ready room.” She left the bridge and entered her ready room for the first time. She took a seat at what was now her desk. It felt strange to be on the Captain’s side of it. She activated the console on the desk and read the message from Admiral Beckett.

To: Command, USS Odin From: Star Fleet Command Subject: Mission Your mission, as per the Armageddon Directive, is to board one of the newly formed Borg wedges. Find out what you can about their new technology and try to disrupt the Collective from the inside. If this directive has been issued than it is imperative that you succeed in boarding the Wedge. Your mission is largely based on the hopes that you will find useful information on board the Borg ships. Your mission to disrupt and use their own technology against them must succeed. Good Luck. Signed FAdm Beckett, CINCSF

Linda sighed. Boarding a Borg Ship was the last thing she wanted her crew to do, but orders were orders. [Belrain’Tan to Orlanson.] “Orlanson here, Go ahead Commander.” [The Senior Staff are ready for you, Captain.] “On my way, Commander. Orlanson Out.” Linda rose and left the ready room. Entering the Observation lounge, she made her way towards the head of the table. In the seat where she’d sat on Star Base-1, sat Counsellor Loftsern. To make her anxiety rise through the situation, she sat and in formed her Senior Staff of their orders. “I don’t like it,” Valerie commented, once Captain Orlanson was finished. “Nor I. While I agree, the Borg need to be stopped. This isn’t the way to do it,” Kyle Flinders put in. Ray Linxwen took in what everyone was saying, “It’s dangerous yes, but orders are orders and the lives of Millions are at risk if we don’t go along with it.” His words hit everyone. They were plain and they spoke the truth. He’d had a bad habbit, even when they’d served together on the Ramses, to stand up for Linda Orlanson. Linda flashed him a smile, “I’m no happier about this then you, But as Major Linxwen pointed out, Orders are orders." The room grew solemn. The Captain and the major were correct. They all knew that who ever they assigned to the mission could be sent to their death. “Who will lead the mission Captain?” asked Garrett Jacks. “Either myself or Commander Belrain’Tan,” Linda replied. Belrain’Tan looked at her. He had a strong disliking to female officers. Practically when they were superior to him. They tended to be know it alls, or self centred. Although he didn’t know Linda Orlanson very well, he could tell she was different. He sensed courage and determination from her. He wasn’t going to judge her straight away. “Very well, Captain,” was all he said. He was a man of few words. “I realise no one really knows their department members yet, but I need you to use your judgment and send one person from each department on the mission. You are very welcome to come yourselves as well,” Captain Orlanson, sensed Belrain’Tan’s discomfort around female officers and made a mental note to talk to him at a later date about it. “And, if they don’t want to do it. There’s no forcing them. A mission like this has to go to some one who’ll try there best, and not let the team down.” “Captain, How will we be boarding? Teleporting or shuttles?” asked Elric, the Chief of Security. “Transporters. We’re going to try this a simple, in and out. No Dilly Dallying,” Linda said plainly. Her eyes focused on everyone. “Dismissed. Commander Belrain’Tan, remain behind please.” The senior staff filed out of the room, devising ways to select who was to be sent on the mission and who wasn’t. “Yes Captain?” “One of us is leading that mission, but who? Is the question.” “I’m quite happy to do it, but you seem eager to command it yourself. I have my arguments about that, but I’ll voice them later.” Linda looked at him curiously. She wasn’t sure about this Vulcan, but she still trusted him. Maybe not with her life, but with her crew. “Well, you might as well voice them now Commander, because the discission will be made here and now,” she said, urging him to continue. “Well, you’re the Captain. Do you really think it’s safe for you to go on such a mission?” he inquired. “Belrain’Tan, It’s not safe for any member of this crew. The best way for me to show I’m serious about my job, is to be out there, with my crew, working side by side with them. I’m a scientist at heart. Not someone who sits back and lets everyone else do the work.” Belrain’Tan sat back in his chair and contemplated what his Captain had just said. He understood her perfectly. Being a Marine himself, he knew what it was like to want to be out there, facing the danger with everyone. “Captain, we’re on our own. If anything happens to you, the crew would have to rely on me. I’m sure they’d much rather rely on you, their Captain.” Linda sighed. She too saw the point that her First Officer was making. She’d been on his side several times. Fighting with the Captain not to do something, but you can’t always get what you want. “Alright, I’ll give in this time. I’m not going to be one of those know-it-all Captains, but next time I lead the away team.” Belrain’Tan nodded. Pleased with the outcome. He felt more secure in his new position. Linda Orlanson is different from other female officer’s I’ve served with. She's strong and reliable. And a telepath... “Thank you Commander,” Linda smiled, "Oh, and i don't tend to change my way of Command." He nodded and left the Captain. He had an Away Mission to prepare for. Linda watched as he left the room. He’ll lead this crew well. I couldn’t have asked for a better First Officer. She tapped her commbadge, “Orlanson to all Senior Staff. Have the Away Team meet Commander Belrain’Tan in Transporter Room One.” With that, she stood and left the Observation Lounge.

H’Kan was firing on one of the Borg Wedges, but was having no luck. He noticed Captain Orlanson coming back from the Senior Staff meeting. “Captain, Starbase-1 has been destroyed.” “What? How can it be?” Linda was dumbfounded; she’d been aboard the base just hours before.

Elsewhere on the ship, Department heads were organising members for the away team. Determined to make sure it went as planned, and that they’d succeeded.

Kyle was going through his list of Officers. He was deciding between H’Kan and Helen Jenkins. H’Kan, we need Helen at the Helm in case we get into trouble. “Flinders to H’Kan, report to the Transporter room immediately,” he said, tapping his Commbadge.

Belrain’Tan entered the Transporter Room, to find most of the away team there. He looked at them all approvingly. He noted the fact that Major Linxwen was taking the place as the team Marine. Belrain’Tan understood the Major’s choice. He didn’t yet know the team, and like any good Marine, he didn’t trust them yet. He recognised H’Kan from the bridge, but was yet to learn the names of the other officers. “Alright, I’m Commander Belrain’Tan. Have your Department Heads briefed you on the mission you are going upon?” He started. Holly looked up. She’d been thinking about what was going on, “No Sir, only that we’d be boarding a Borg ship.” The others nodded in agreement. Belrain’Tan nodded. ‘Very well, our mission, is to board the Borg Wedge, find out what we can about their new technology, see if we can use it against them ,or use our own to disrupt the collective from the inside. Understood?” The group nodded, and chorused together, “Aye Sir.” They stepped upon the Transporter pad, and with a simple order they were gone.

On the Bridge, someone else had taken H’Kan’s position, and was a rapidly firing on a Borg Wedge. They’d left one un-touched; to make sure their away team came back alive. “The away team is now on board the Borg Wedge Captain,” Yesica Kallen reported. “Keep a Transporter lock on them at all times Lieutenant,” Linda ordered. “Aye Captain.” Linda sat back in her chair. Counsellor Loftsern beside her and the First Officer’s Chair empty. So much for dealing with the Romulans… Why did they come back after all these years? It doesn’t make any sense…

“Ok, move out. Let’s get this ship down, and get back to our own,” Belrain’Tan ordered. “I believe the central core is this way sir,” Pelly Folkin reported. “Lead the way Ensign-,” Belrain’Tan stoped his sentence, suddenly, as if asking the young Engineer to finish for him. “Pelly Folkin, Sir.” Scarletta stayed at the back of the group, she was only a doctor and didn’t know much about central Cores, or disrupting ships. Isa looked over at the other officer in the same blue uniform as herself. “Hey, I’m Isa Audust, you’re a doctor right?” Scarletta smiled, “Yeah, Scarletta Ramonova.” Isa had her tricorder out, “Just look at this stuff. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Pelly flashed her a smile, “It’s quite interesting indeed, Ms. Audust.” “Are we going? The Captain wants us out as soon as possible,” Holly Palmer asked. “She’s right, let’s go,” Major Linxwen stated, he turned to her, “And who might you be Ensign?” “I’m Holly Palmer.” Ray nodded. A Curious name for a Vulcan, but then Linda is Asian…Who am I to complain? Everyone has their Backgrounds. I know Linda’s, but not this girl's. The Away Team started on their way, following Ensign Folkin and his tricorder. Isa had hers out too, trying to gather up as much information as she could. Holly stayed at the back, further then Dr. Ramonova. She had her Phaser rifle out, ready to fight if they were attacked. Belrain’Tan and Ray Linwen were in the front with Pelly Folkin. H’Kan, he casually stayed in the middle. He too had a phaser rifle, having been banned from taking his Bat’leth with him; he was in a grumpy mood and not willing to speak. Plus his mind was on Nelda’Rak, back on the Odin. He was going to ask her to marry, before they’d been reassigned, but that would have to wait. Borg walked along beside them. They didn’t take any notice to the small team of Star Fleet personnel walking through their ship. As they came closer to the core, the Borg intensity grew, and the information kept coming through. “This is amazing…” Isa commented quietly. “I know, I can’t wait till we can get back to the Odin and analyse some of this stuff,” Pelly said. “Ok, quiet you two, we’re nearly there,” Belrain’Tan said quietly. The group approached the main core. The information was pouring in, exactly what Captain Orlanson wanted. Finally deciding he couldn’t keep quiet for the whole mission, H’Kan spoke, ‘Now what sir?” “We try and disrupt the cube of course,” Pelly said. As the team attempted to access the main computer, they didn’t notice three Borg drones approach them. Ray, the first to notice them, fired his Phaser Rifle, Holly caught on quickly and fired too. The closed in around Pelly and Isa, letting them deal with the computers. Belrain’Tan noticed more drones coming from another corridor. “H’Kan, your assistance is needed here.” H’Kan made his way over to the Commander and fired at the Drones. “Hurry up you two, they’re adapting to our frequencies,” Holly called, just before she was hit by an assimilation dart. “Ensign Palmer…” Major Linxwen called as he watched her fall to the ground, “Ramonova, help her.” Scarletta finally, needed rushed over to the injured Security officer. “We’re nearly done, hold on,” Isa called over the chaos. “We’re holding on as much as we can, Lieutenant Audust,” H’Kan called back. They continued to fight the Drones, who just kept coming, when one went down, another came up. “Got it,” Pelly called. “Belrain’Tan tapped his commbadge, “Odin, seven to beam up.” With that, the team was beamed up, but not before H’Kan was injected with assimilation tubes in the neck.

They appeared in sickbay, Scarletta moved Holly Palmer to one of the Biobeds. Isa was about to walk over to one of the stations, when she tripped over H’Kan, falling to the ground. Hadden looked up from what he was doing when the group beamed in. He didn’t notice the injured Klingon until, the science officer so skilfully tripped over him. Pelton helped Isa up, “there you go, are you ok?” Isa nodded, slightly startled. She hadn’t expected to find the tactical officer on the ground, “I’m fine, I think you should attend to Ensign H'Kan though.” Pelton nodded, “You’re quite right there.” H’Kan was moved onto a biobed and Pelton started tending to his injuries. Belrain’Tan turned to the others, “You’ve all done a wonderful job and you have the rest of the day off. I’ll inform Captain Orlanson of everything that occurred.” They filed out of sickbay and headed off in their different directions.

Linda sat on the bridge and awaited the return of the away team. When the call to beam them up was given, she eagerly awaited Belrain’Tan’s report. She stood from her chair, “When Commander Belrain’Tan returns, I’d like to see him in my ready room. Lieutenant Granger, you have the bridge.” “Aye Captain,” Julian replied.

Linda entered her ready room and collapsed into her chair. A lot had happened in a short time. First her promotion and new command, then the Borg attacks. Already needing to put her crew in danger. Although she wasn’t physically exhausted, she was mentally. The sooner this was over, the better. She was snapped back to reality when Belrain’Tan entered. “You wanted to see me Captain?” he asked. “Yes, take a seat Commander. So, how did the mission go? Were you able to succeed?” Linda asked. Belrain’Tan thought for a while. There was a lot to tell, “Well, boarding was fine. We made it to the Core without a problem. Ms. Audust and Mr. Folkins gathered information on the way, and were in charge of getting access to the main computer. While at the Core we were attacked. Ensigns H’Kan and Palmer were injured and are currently in sickbay. I believe Ms. Audust and Mr. Folkins were successful in accessing the main computer and disrupting the core, but we needed to get out of there, our weapons were having no effect on the drones.” He finished his report and looked at his captain, and waited for her response. “I see, well, I guess we’ll find out if they were successful or not. Now, our two injured crewmen, how seriously injured were they?” Linda replied. “I’m not exactly sure about that. I’m still waiting for a reply from Sickbay.” Linda sighed, not even twenty-four hours in command and she was already testing her medical crew out. They were interrupted when Belrain’Tan’s commbadge chirped with the Chief Medical officer’s voice. [McGowen to Belrain’Tan, We have a problem, could you and the Captain please come to Sickbay.] Tapping his commbadge to reply, Belrain’Tan said, “Belrain’Tan here, We’re on our way Lieutenant. Belrain’Tan out,” He looked at Linda, “Coming Captain?” Linda nodded, “Yes.” She rose and followed her First Officer out of her Ready Room and into the Turbolift.

Hadden was covering H’Kan’s body when they came into sickbay. Linda looked at the Klingon, and then at the Vulcan girl who lay on the other bed. “What happened to Ensign H’Kan?” She asked walking over to him. “Due to the Transport, he was in mid assimilation when he was beamed into Sickbay. The shock of being mid way, killed him,” Lieutenant McGowen explained. Belrain’Tan looked at the Klingon, he’d seen him earlier that day with one of the Marines, “Did he ever wake?” “Yes, but the only thing he said was, Nelda,” Hadden replied, “We have no idea who that is.” Linda thought about the crew list that she’d read through, “Could he of meant Nelda’Rak?” She asked. Belrain’Tan thought, “Possible, I did see him talking with her earlier.” Linda looked over at Holly Palmer, “and Ms. Palmer?” “We’re trying, but she’s not coming round. She was hit in the chest and hit the ground hard from what we can tell. If she does survive, it’s likely she won’t be able to serve anymore.” Linda sighed miserably. She knew every Captain had their losses, but this was ridiculous. Loosing two crew members in under twenty-four hours of Command, Linda was shattered. What was she going to do? “I see.” Belrain’Tan looked at Linda, “Should I call Nelda’Rak up here?” Linda nodded, “You should.” Isa, who hadn’t left sickbay, yet, came up to the Captain and the First Officer, “I don’t mean to be eaves dropping, but, I heard you were confused by whom Ensign H’Kan was referring too. It was indeed Nelda’Rak, they were an item, for quite a few years before coming on board. H’Kan planned to ask Nelda’Rak to marry…” She stopped, not really wanting to go on unless asked. Linda nodded, “I see. We’d better get her up here then. Lieutenant, would you stay and explain that to her if she wants to know?” “Of course Captain,” Isa replied. Belrain’Tan walked away from them and contacted Nelda’Rak, asking her to come to Sickbay.

A few moments later, a Klingon Marine entered Sickbay, she walked up to Commander Belrain’Tan, “You wanted to see me sir,” She asked. Hadden, Linda and Isa stood together behind Belrain’Tan. He’d been the one to call her up. For all of them, it was a guessing game. Would he tell her himself, or would he pass it to either the Captain or the Chief Medical Officer? “Am I missing something?” She asked, looking behind the First Officer to the Captain and the Chief Medical Officer. Linda sighed and stepped forward, “Lieutenant, as you know H’Kan was asked to go on the Away Mission to the Borg ship. The mission was totally optional, and he accepted to go.” She couldn’t bear to go on; she’d watched Captain Dellion tell other crew members and family members that their loved ones had died, but she’d never done it herself. Hadden McGowen on the other hand, was well rehearsed in telling people, because no matter where you were in the Medical Department, it was your job to tell. He smiled at the Captain and then turned to Nelda’Rak, “I’m sorry Lieutenant, H’Kan was killed while the Away Team was beaming out of the Borg Ship.” If there was anything he hated about his job, it was loosing a patient and watching the loved ones break down after being told. Isa went up to Nelda’Rak, “I’m very sorry Lieutenant,” Isa thought back to when her brother had died. They’d been close and she’d been devastated. She hadn’t been happy when she’d met Griffith Volan, she’d have to work with him, and he was half Romulan. It had been the Romulan Tal Shiar that had killed her brother, “I know what it’s like to loose a loved one.” Nelda’Rak looked at Isa, “Thank you Lieutenant, he’d told me yesterday there was something he wanted to ask me, but then he got asked to go, so he never got to tell me.” She had tears in her eyes, but she was doing her best to hold them back. “Do you want to know what he was going to ask you?” Isa asked, “He was thinking about it on the mission.” Nelda’Rak looked at Isa in surprise, “You know? Do tell me please.” Isa nodded, “Well, H’Kan was planning to ask you…he was going to ask you to… to Marry him. Nelda’Rak looked over at H’Kan and started crying, “I loved him…” “And he loved you too, Nelda’Rak,” Isa said. "Rest in Stovocor my love, for we shall meet again." Linda watched the two next to the dead officer’s body and felt miserable. She couldn’t help blaming herself. She made sure to block her thoughts from Isa though. The last thing she needed now was a sympathy trip. Nelda’Rak needed it, not her. She turned and left Sickbay. Linda needed to be alone, so she headed to her quarters. Belrain’Tan noticed Captain Orlanson leave without saying a word. I actually feel sorry for her and I don’t know why…She’s unlike any Commanding Officer I’ve ever served with. She cares for her crew, even though she doesn’t know them. He looked over at Nelda’Rak and then at the security officer. He went over to Lieutenant Ramonova, “Will she be ok?” he asked, referring to Holly Palmer. Scarletta sighed, “It’s too early to tell if she’ll survive, but even if she does, she’ll be permanently scared. Physically and Mentally.” The young doctor didn’t look pleased with the prognoses. Having only been graduated a few months, loosing a patient was hard for her. Belrain’Tan found himself lowering his guard. He couldn’t help it. All this pain around him, even his Vulcan abilities couldn’t suppress the feeling of sympathy for all the people around him. “Thank you, inform me if there are any improvements with Ms. Palmer’s condition.” He felt slightly responsible for the girl’s state. If he’d been able to attack the Borg faster, maybe she wouldn’t be lying here in sickbay, with no hope of fully recovering. It had seemed to Belrain’Tan that she’d had a lot of potential as a Security Officer, but now that chance for he was gone. He left Scarletta and headed to the Bridge. Captain Orlanson obviously wasn’t in a state to command at the moment, so he took it upon himself as the First Officer to take her place.

Several days passed, and things slowly started to return to normal aboard the Odin. Nelda’Rak, although still mourning the lose of her Fiancée , had returned to work after organizing a ceremony for H’Kan. Holly Palmer had passed away, and Belrain’Tan and Ray Linxwen had taken it upon themselves to organize a service for her. As Captain, Linda Orlanson had officiated at both funerals. Ray felt guilty that he’d never gotten to know Holly and H’Kan and Belrain’Tan kept thinking it was his fault that Holly Palmer had passed. Galiena had her hands full dealing with those who’d been affected by the deaths. While, the Captain had kept quiet about it, Galiena sensed she was having a hard time dealing with it, so as the ships counsellor, Galiena made a mental note to speak with Linda when she got the chance. The days had been the same old same old. Fighting Borg, running from Borg, fighting again, then running again. So now and again destroying a Borg Wedge. It wasn’t till one day when things got bad for the crew. They were finally starting to settle into their new ship when sensors showed three borg wedges approaching their location. “Captain, we’ve got a problem,” Julian said, trying to stay calm. “What is it Ms. Granger?” Linda asked. “Three borg wedges approaching our location, and our shields are damaged,” Julian replied. Linda sighed, if it wasn’t one thing it was another. Three, there’s no way we can deal with that many, but we’re going to have to try. There’s no running now. Just my luck. “How are our weapons?” she asked. “Replenished and ready for a fight,” replied a new officer Linda hadn’t seen before, he was obviously H’Kan’s replacement. Linda nodded, “Take us in Ms. Jenkin’s.” Helen nodded, “Aye Captain.” Galiena sighed. There goes my chance to speak with the Captain… Linda looked at the Counsellor, My ready room, after we’re finished here. Yes Captain, I’m sorry, but I do need to speak with you. Galiena replied to Captain Orlanson. Don’t be sorry. I think I understand why. Linda said in reply. Galiena turned away from Linda Orlanson and faced the view screen. The Borg Wedges were clearly visable. “Ops, Open a ship wide channel,” Linda said. “Channel Open.” “We are about to confront the Borg. All personnel report to battle stations, Orlanson out.” With that, she signalled the channel to be closed. Several officers walked onto the bridge, relieving junior officers and taking over. The battle started when the leading borg Wedge fired upon the Odin. “Flinder’s, fire at will,” Linda ordered her Chief Tactical Officer. The view screen showed the Federation ship’s red phasers cut through space and hit the wedge, while the Borg green phasers hit the Odin. “Shields down to seventy percent,” Yesica Kallen reported, “They’re dropping rapidly.” Linda cursed silently and Galiena looked at her in surprise, but Linda shrugged it off, “Bridge to Engineering, transfer all secondary power to Shields and weapons.” Garett Jacks’s voice replied back over the Comm system, “We’ve already transferred all secondary power Captain.” Linda sighed, “Well you better do something Lieutenant.” “We’re trying, but we’re having no luck,” he replied. Granger’s voice cut in, "Captain, two more ships are showing on sensors.” “Federation or Borg?” “It’s the Ramses and the Amsterdam,” she replied, “The Amsterdam is hailing us.” “On screen,” Linda ordered. [Captain Orlanson, a pleasure to see you again. Are you still able to fight?] “Captain Dellion, it’s been a while. Yes, we’re able to continue. If we need to back out, please cover our backs.” Dellion laughed, [of course Linda, by the way. It’s not the same with out you.] Lida smiled at her former Captain and the new First Officer. She recognised him as the former Marine Commander, “I’m sure things are fine.” The Odin rocked and one of the consoles exploded. Luckily, the officer at it was able to jump out of the way. “Shields down to fifty percent,” Yesica called. “Tactical, fire at these coordinates,” Linda said, transferring a set of coordinates to Kyle’s station. “Aye,” Kyle called back to Captain Orlanson. They watched as one of the Wedges blew up, the shock wave approached the Odin. “Helm, get us away from the shockwave.” Helen’s hands raced across the console and the ship turned, taking them out of reach from the explosion. As they ran, another wedge followed them, firing upon the Odin. Several officers were thrown from their stations, including Linda Orlanson who was thrown to the ground. Belrain’Tan attempted to grab her, but missed, “Captain!” Linda got back up. She wasn’t going to be defeated that easily, “I’m alright Commander.” She got back into her chair. “We’ve lost shields totally,” Yesica called, getting back up. [Linda, get your crew out of here.] The message came from the Amsterdam. [I agree with Captain Dellion, Linda. We’ll take care of the last two.] The second message was from the Ramses, Linda’s first ship. “Ok, you two win. I owe you both one,” she turned to Helen Jenkins, “You heard them, Ensign, get us out of here.” The ship turned, taking the Odin and her crew away from the battle. The Amsterdam and the Ramses fought side by side protecting the Odin and allowing the ship to get away. Moments later Julian smiled, “They’ve beaten the two Wedges, Captain. We’re in the clear for now.” Before Linda could reply, Dellion appeared on her view screen again, [How’s your crew Captain?] “We seem to be alright, yours?” she replied. [Fine, we were barely touched, but we’ve had repairs over the past few days.] “You’re lucky, we haven’t.” The three ships were taken by surprise, when another Wedge came into view. The fired on the Odin, taking out, what at that moment was the weakest ship. Taken by surprise, Linda was once again thrown from her chair, this time not faring as well. Dellion, obviously surprised by the attack shouted orders to his bridge crew, ordering them to fire on the Borg Wedge which had just taken out his friend. [LINDA!] Belrain’Tan, figuring they wouldn’t survive the explosion of the last Borg Wedge ordered Helen to get them out of the area. [Commander, follow the Ramses.] “Aye sir. Ensign, you heard him,” Belrain’Tan ordered. Galiena tapped her commbadge, “Loftsern to Sickbay, A medical team is needed on the Bridge, now.” Belrain’Tan knelt down beside his Captain, “Captain Orlanson,” he shook her gently, but there was no reply. “Commander, we’re leaking Plasma,” Helen called from the helm, “We’re not going to make it in time.” “Send a message to the Ramses, inform them of our situation,” Belrain’Tan ordered. Julian complied swiftly, soon enough they were moving along and out of range from the explosion. “They’ve got us on a Tractor Beam sir,” Helen called. “Good,” was all Belrain’Tan said. The medical team came up onto the bridge and dispersed to the various injured officers. McGown and Harfdsen came over to the Captain. Belrain’Tan stood and let the doctors do their work. They’d only had the ship a few days and she was already a wreck. [How’s Captain Orlanson?] It was Dellion on the Comm again. Hadden McGowen looked up, “She’ll be fine. Captain Orlanson was just knocked out from a blow to the head.” Dellion nodded, [I see, we’ll escort you to Starbase Alpha.] “Thank you Captain, That would be very much appreciated,” Belrain’Tan replied.

The trip to Starbase was uneventful. The injured crew members were moved to sickbay and engineering crews were all around, trying to fix up consoles and broken conduits. [Here you go Commander. I’ll meet you on Base later on.] “Thank you Captain, All your assistance helped us greatly. Without you we most likely wouldn’t have made it.” [Please Commander. Linda knows how to get herself out of trouble. She’s saved this ship more times then I can remember.] Belrain’Tan nodded, “I never doubted Captain Orlanson.” [Good, cause if you did, I’d have to knock sone sense into you Commander. Now, I better deal with my own crew, Dellion out.] “Ops open a ship wide channel,” Belrain’Tan ordered. “Open sir,” “All personnel, this is Commander Belrain’Tan, First Officer. We are now docked at Starbase. You’ve all done a great job over the pat few days and earned some shore leave, so when you’re finished, feel free to take some time off. Belrain’Tan out.” He admitted to himself that he was exhausted and that he didn’t know how much more he could take. He Borg attack had taken a lot out of him and the Captain.

The crew went about their business, the injured were beamed to the star base’s sickbay, where the walls weren’t falling down around them and the senior staff waited for their Captain to get better, so that the fate of their ship could be decided.

Three days after arriving at Star base Alpha Linda awoke in sickbay, but straight away realised, it wasn’t the sickbay aboard the Odin. At first her vision was blurred, but after blinking a few times her eye sight cleared up. She sat up, to find Commander Belrain’Tan and Major Linxwen at her side. “Ray…Belrain...” She felt weak and voice showed it. “Linda, rest now,” Ray said, making her lay back down. He smiled, “You make a great Captain, Linda and we don’t want to loose you.” Belrain’Tan then voiced his opinion, “I’m in full agreement with Ray. You’re too good a Captain to loose.” Linda smiled, “You mean your opinion of female Captains has changed Commander?” “Yes, because of you Linda.” Linda thought for a moment, “How’s the rest of my crew?” “Enjoying some well deserved Shore Leave,” Belrain’Tan said. “Oh, so they get a break and I’m cooped up here, brilliant,” She muttered. Ray laughed, “You’ll be up soon. I know you.” “Indeed she will be,” said Hadden McGowen coming over, “When you’re ready Captain, you’re allowed to leave, as long as you take it easy though.” “I promise Doctor McGowen,” Linda said, sitting up. [Beckett to Orlanson, Report to my office immediately.] “Well, there goes any idea of resting. I’ll meet you two in the Tavern later on,” Linda said, jumping off the bio bed and leaving sickbay. Hadden sighed, “Captains, they never listen.” Ray laughed, “No, just Linda. She’s never listened to a doctor as long as I’ve known her.”

Linda walked up to the Admiral’s office and straightened her uniform. It was a mess after coming directly from sickbay. She walked in. “You wanted to see me Admiral?” She said, composing herself. “Yes, take a seat Captain,” Admiral Beckett greeted. Linda took a seat. She wasn’t worried, just tiered. “I’m sorry to call you right after you got out of sickbay, but it was imperative that I spoke with you immediately.” “That’s quite alright Sir, I’m not known for listening to doctors anyway,” She said smiling slightly. “Very well then. As you would know, probably better then some, The Odin received a lot of damage during the Borg Attack. I’ve had some engineers look over the Odin and it doesn’t look good. The combined opinion from them is that she can’t be repaired.” Linda looked at the Admiral, the shock was evident in her eyes. She’d had that ship a week and it was already being decommissioned. I can’t believe this, I messed up big, this time. “Captain, the Odin isn’t the only ship we’re loosing. We lost the Yoritomo too.” “At least the Yoritomo’s Commanding Officer held his Command for over a week,” Linda replied. She knew the Admiral was trying make her feel better, but it wasn’t helping. “Captain, I’m willing to keep your crew together, aboard another ship, but it’s up to you,” Admiral Beckett said. “Admiral, are… Are you serious? I mean I just made a mess of my last command and you want me to take another?” Linda asked. “Yes,” It was a plain and simple answer that answered everything, “Captain Orlanson, the Odin had a good time. She’ll be remembered for a long time to come as having one of the best Captains Star Fleet’s ever had commanding her.” Linda looked up in surprise, she hadn’t been expecting that, nor did she believe it. There were plenty of good Captains out there, all that had more experience then her. “Admiral, thank you for your kind words, but honestly, there are much better Captains out there then myself.” Admiral Beckett sighed, but decided to let the girl think what she wants, “Well, there’s a science Vessel that needs a Captain and a crew, are you going to take it?” Linda smiled. A science vessel, eh. How could I possibly say no? “Ok, Admiral. I’ll take it.” Beckett smiled, “Then I believe you should go tell your crew.” Linda nodded and stood, “Thank you Admiral.” "Oh, before you, This belongs to you," Admiral Beckett stood and handed The Odin's Plaque to Linda, "As her Captain, it's rightfuly yours." She left the Admiral’s office, smiling and headed towards the Tavern where she said she’d meet Ray and Belrain’Tan.

To her surprise, she found her whole senior staff seating at one table drinking, “Any room for me?” “Always Captain. Someone get the Captain a chair,” Elric said. Ray turned and grabbed a chair for Linda, “There you go, Linda.” Linda gratefully took a seat. “So, what’s the news captain?” asked Valerie Ederson. Linda sighed, “The Odin’s been decommissioned,” she started, but was interrupted. “They can’t do that to us,” Kyle complained. “Actually they can and they have, ‘Linda stated flatly, “Now, if you’d let me continue Mr. Flinders, I might be able to tell you the rest.” Hadden playfully hit Kyle over the head, “You should know better then to interrupt when the Captain is speaking.” The group laughed at Kyle’s dismay. When they stopped Belrain’Tan asked Linda to continue. “Well, while the Odin will no longer be our ship, there is another vessel in need of a crew,” Linda flashed a smile towards Valerie, knowing she’d like this, “The USS Galileo, a Science Vessel will be ours.” They cheered. They’d get to keep their crew, and their new Captain. Even Belrain’Tan joined in with the Celebrations. “Hey, does that mean we’re off duty now?” Hadden asked. “It sure does,” Garett put in. “Well, then…Linda, would you like a drink?” Hadden asked, somewhat worried if he’d offended Captain Orlanson. “Yes I would Hadden, thank you, and we are off duty, so no need for ranks!” Ray laughed, “You haven’t changed a bit Linda.” “Why you want me to?” she asked jokingly. “Not at all, we like you just the way you are.” “Well, she could listen to us doctors more,” Hadden laughed. “That will never happen,” Linda said, laughing. I guess Galiena never got that chat she wanted..I'll talk with her later, I owe her that much.
