Romulan Attack Patterns

Vessels of the Romulan Star Empire utilize two basic attack modes during battle. The most common type of attack is by the use of a hit-and-run method which exploits the cloaking device. Ships remain cloaked as they make their run at the enemy vessel and decloak only long enough to fire their weapons. The second method of attack is by head-to-head combat. Only certain vessels are designed to withstand this type of attack, including the Mosaram Class Warbird and the Firehawk Class Battle Cruiser, which both feature ablative armor and can take more direct fire than standard ships.

Romulan vessels often attack in units of three, most typically a larger vessel, such as a warbird, and two support vessels, such as heavy cruisers. While the larger vessel directly engages its opponent, the support vessels use the hit-and-run method to keep the enemy ship occupied and unable to concentrate its full attention on the warbird.

Hit-and-Run Attack Patterns

Attack Pattern 17

Attack Pattern 17 involves a cloaked vessel coming over and on top of its target. The vessel decloaks as it reaches its destination and unleashes a full barrage of weapons on the target before quickly recloaking to avoid return fire. If support ships are present, these smaller vessels will decloak and attack the target a few seconds before the main vessel appears, thus distracting the target's attention.
