Personal History

Early Life

Mara was born and raised on Trill by her scientist father Toske and teacher Mother Ilena, although Mara's arrival had been a bit of a surprise, to the slightly older couple, as they already had 12 year old Loran. However that didn't mean that Mara wasn't loved and she grew up in a very loving and fun household, where her brother Loran, didn't think it was uncool, to spend time with his younger sister. That was until he discovered girls and followed their Mother's footsteps by becoming a Teacher. As for Mara, she had keen interests in history, other worlds and the usual subjects, with no specific ambition as to what she wanted to do for a career, when she grew up. Apart from Loran, she had a few friends, although preferred reading to going up. That was until Alaya Mostro and her family moved next door. At first they only spoke briefly and that was at school, before Mara discovered that Alaya also enjoyed history and a close friendship quickly developed. It was Alaya who encouraged Mara to explore the outdoors and as they got older, they would go for long walks, talk and generally have a good time. However one particular experience, almost put Mara off the outdoors for life, thanks to a new found fear of birds. Her and Alaya had come across a birds nest that had fallen from a tree, perhaps the result of some kind of predator. Whatever the cause, the girls decided to help and return it to its original position. Although in hindsight perhaps it wasn't such a good idea, not only with Alaya hurting her ankle, but the size of the parents, who no doubt instinctively wanted to protect their young, attacked Mara, leaving her with beak and claw marks. To this day, she can't go near or be near birds of any form, thanks to that lasting memory and will find a hiding spot or means escape if one comes towards her. Their friendship became closer and when it came time to leave education, Mara did consider applying for the Symbiote Initiative Programme, but when Alaya was accepted, decided that maybe it wasn't for her after all and chose to pursue a career in medicine instead. It appealed to the young Trill because she was a caring person and maybe this was what she was supposed to do. Convinced of this and developing a love for her studies, Mara had every intention of staying on Trill, before she met Patrick Mohan, a visiting Star fleet doctor who had arranged for a six month sabbatical on Trill. Yes he was ten years older, but that didn't stop a mutual attraction from forming and those six months were a lot of fun for the 21 year old Mara. Although as most things it came to an abrupt end, when she decided to apply for Star Fleet, which didn't go down well with Patrick or her parents. However regardless of the opposition, she came to the hard realisation that it wasn't going to work out with him and that moving away from Trill, was something she needed to do. Her parents eventually came round to the idea and as she left for Earth, ended things with Patrick, who was then assigned to the USS Petersburg.

Academy

Considering she had lived a normal yet exciting life on her home world, nothing had fully prepared for Mara, for what she was about to experience on Earth. At first and fresh from a rather intense relationship, Mara had immersed herself fully into her studies, but then the lure of partying and flirting took over, wanting to embrace her rebellious side more. Of course her grades suffered, but she did her best to hide it all, especially from her parents and was quite happy to follow this path of self destruction. If she hadn't of met Dr Terena Morris, she may of well stayed that way and crashed out of the Academy. Luckily for her the intervention that followed and the advice given, made her realise, that she needed to stop. A long lasting friendship was the result of spending time with Dr Morris, in a mainly educational setting, led Mara to making progress and given her the strength to have that determination, as well as realising when she made a mistake, rather than bury it and let it fester. From that moment and for the rest of her time at the Academy, she made new friends, developed new hobbies and graduated as one of the top cadets in her class. Then it was time for her to be assigned and she never forgot the lessons or experiences that she had.

First Assignment

Midshipman Rexan was assigned to the USS Canterbury, which at first was a little daunting but she soon found her confidence as well as new found respect for what it actually meant to be aboard a star ship. Of course there were moments that tested her and she experienced a lot of different emotions. But she persisted and embraced the experiences, both the bad and the good as she steadily climbed the proverbial promotion ladder and given more responsibility. Her work was her main focus, always learning and despite it not working out with Patrick, Mara did realise that she had a certain type, not that she gave in much to that, at least nothing serious. She had learnt how to deal with her emotions and the mistakes she may of, made and she was still the same Mara, that had risen from the ashes, back at the Academy, thanks to those she was close too. That never changed and whenever an opportunity came up, she fully embraced it. Yes it was difficult to leave the Canterbury after 3 years but now she was ready for a new challenge as a Chief Medical Officer and was looking forward to receiving her new assignment.
