Personal History

Andrew Regan was the only son of Stephen and Marianne Regan, and took his grandfather's first name in Regan tradition. Stephen Regan was a senior manager at a civilian transport company, and his mother worked for a colonial charity that supported orphans. His parents separated four years after Andrew was born, but maintained a working, if strained relationship with each other and their son.

Andrew found that inbetween his emotional and flighty mother, and his career-obssesed, distant father, his upbringing was chaotic at best. He increasingly found himself dependant upon himself for guidance and knowledge, and inevitably turned to reading to educate himself. It was from a young age he discovered an interest in science, as a way of truly understanding how things worked.

He excelled in studies at school, discovering he also had an affinity for technical systems and understanding how they functioned. These abilities were seen as a valuable resource by a Starfleet careers advisor. She described a long career of examining the strangest phenomena which caught the young Regan's attention. When he announced his intention to enrol at Starfleet Academy on Earth, his parents were astounded - they had not truly kept an eye on Andrew's progression - and then were proud and in favour.

Enrolling at the Academy when he was 19, Regan found the theory easy to grasp, but struggled with the rigorous physical demands like survival training. He also started out as an akward and distant young man, who preferred books to colleagues. Eventually though he developed a wry and sardonic sense of humour and a loose collection of acquaintances and friends.

Under the guidance of his tutors, Regan pursued studies in pure sciences, as well as developing a good knowledge of engineering concepts, ensuring he had multiple skills. Ultimately he has developed into a very self-reliant man with no deep emotional ties but a lack of personal support that he sometimes finds difficult.

On graduation, Regan was assigned to the Avenger-class heavy cruiser Ticonderoga. As a science officer aboard a warship, he mainly supported the tactical and command departments with his technical knowledge and sensor operations. The Ticonderoga was briefly involved in an operation that saw the Starfleet crew liaising with Romulan businessmen, gathering intelligence. Regan's novel use of active sensor techniques successfully revealed cloaked starships operating nearby, and he was promoted to Ensign for his service.

The Ticonderoga was then part of the forces rushed to Sol when the Krynar Confederacy appeared in the Federation home system. After the inconclusive confrontation, she was attached to the force which counter-attacked the Krynar at Tellar Prime. Then, she was assigned to squadron Foxtrot-Uniform-Two for the attack on the Confederacy's capital star system - during which she used her graser weapon to utterly destroy the Krynar homeworld. During the withdrawal, the Ticonderoga was the victim of a last-ditch kamikaze attack that catastrophically damaged the heavy cruiser.

Regan assisted in emergency medical treatment on the Bridge, before being rescued by their sister ship the Avenger. He was treated for broken bones and smoke inhalation, then discharged when the task force arrived back at Starbase Bravo.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Applied Astrophysics
Academy Minor(s): Starship Engineering
Hobbies and Pastimes: Reading, especially historical dramas. Visiting archaeological digs. Alien cuisine and drinks.
Short-Term Goals: He anticipates studying his first phenomena, using starship lab facilities and solving problems with colleagues.
Long-Term Goals: Regan seeks increasing amounts of responsibility, and hopes to one day gain a command - and to discover and document a new phenomena! Like many scientists, Regan would like to leave a legacy of knowledge.
Personality: Regan is shy and awkward underneath, and masks it with a sharp, dry and sardonic sense of humour. He can be sociable but prefers to keep people as acquaintances rather than close friends. He is curious, fascinated by the universe, and enthusiastic in his pursuit of knowledge. He does his best to be polite, helpful, and enjoys the clear-cut hierarchy of responsibility in Starfleet.
Sense of Humor: At times Regan can come across as cynical, employing sarcasm as a social defence. He also uses it to socialize, ingratiating himself with colleagues through wry observations.
Phobias: Regan has a strong sense of vertigo, almost failing his zero-gravity training.
Likes: Regan is fairly adventurous with exotic food and drink, and loves to indulge in the foodstuffs of new cultures. He enjoys reading, especially scientific journals and theoretical papers. He likes proper organisation and enjoys taking the lead in group work.
Dislikes: If pressed, Regan will admit he is estranged from his parents. He doesn't regard this as a problem. He suffered some mild bullying at school and abhors thugs and intimidators. He disapproves of anything anti-knowledge such as restrictive religions.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: The disorganisation of others that delays his own work. Regan can be fastidious, mainly as a concern over his allergies and sensitivity to dust and the like.
Bad Habits or Vices: Regan enjoys traditional alcohol, especially distilled spirits, and eschews sythehol wherever possible. He considers classical Earth whiskies and bourbons a desirable luxury.
Achievements: His regular successes through school and the Academy in his studies and experiments have enhanced his confidence in his scientific interests.
Disappointments: Although he is resigned to it, Regan cannot escape the fact that his parents are at worst indifferent to his successes. He is aware of his social failings and occasionally over not being closer to people. He missed the opportunity to accompany a last-minute archaeological expedition to Mars, and resolved to be more spontaneous.
Illnesses: A marked weakness to dust, pollen and other allergies that can cause sneezing fits.
Strengths: Passionate for his calling, and disciplined as an officer. Aspirational, knowledgeable, and not afraid to take charge - or if he is, masking it well.
Weaknesses: Socially, Regan can be unfamiliar and come across as distant or even overly sardonic. He isn't in the best of physical shape, and can be susceptible to allergies.
Fears: Apart from his phobia of heights, Regan is afraid of failing in his career, and having to return ignominiously to his parents.
Prejudices: As mentioned above, Regan has an irrational resentment of faith-based religions that oppose scientific method.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Regan prefers darker shades, but enjoys smart formal wear whenever possible.
Distinguishing Features: Thick eyebrows, one-sided smile when amused.
Pets: N/A
Friends: No real close friend.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The shock his parents displayed when he announced he was going to the Academy drove home the fact that he was disconnected from his family.
Best Time: Working on his final experiments for his Academy qualification was the pinnacle of his desires, to apply procedure and gain true results.
Most Crucial Experience: Regan still remembers his encounter with the Starfleet careers officer that opened his eyes to enjoying his calling by developing a career in the Fleet.
Role Model: Regan considers the career of Admiral John J. Harriman II a great source of inspiration. Harriman's career, from being in the shadow of his father and Admiral Kirk to the succeses of his command of the Enterprise show the achievements that can be made by the unlikeliest of men!
