Personal History

Daniel Reese was born and raised on the surface of Luna, Earth’s moon. While very young, Daniel’s parents divorced, and his father remarried a few years later. While his older brothers were shaken by these life changes, Daniel’s young age allowed his childhood to remain mostly normal and stable. He quickly came to view his step-mother as his true parent, while his mother pursued her own interests on planets far from Earth. His relationship with his biological mother remains strained to this day.

From a young age, Daniel showed an interest in two things: astronomy and writing. Throughout his teen years, he wrote diligently and made regular trips with his father to one of Luna’s many advanced telescopes. In college, he double majored in Literature and Astronomy and managed to publish several short stories. During this time he also worked unsuccessfully on a written novel, which he has never been able to finish. Upon graduation, his small notoriety in short story publishing provided him a chance to attend graduate school in holo-novel development. However, because of his own struggles with written novels and because his heart still yearned for the stars, Daniel chose to pursue a career in Starfleet instead.

Arriving at the academy at the age of 21, Daniel knew he had made the right choice. He excelled in his academy science classics, becoming particularly interested in the field of astrophysics. He eventually chose this as his academy major. While on his field training assignment in his second year, Daniel joined a Federation research project developing a “subspace telescope.” The intent of the project was to give Starfleet sensors the ability to look into subspace as they do regular space, in order to detect subspace anomalies before they can damage or destroy Federation ships and outposts. While the project was eventually cancelled, Daniel has remained in touch with the lead scientist, Dr. Esrael Hopkins, who hopes to one day continue his research.

During his time at the academy, Daniel met the daughter of one his professors and future fiancé, Rowena Abrams. Rowena was then teaching at a middle school on Luna, not far from where Daniel grew up. They quickly began dating and were engaged by the time Daniel graduated the academy. The pair originally planned to marry after Dan's first tour of duty aboard Space Station Sierra-18, but due to the untimely destruction of the station and Reese's promotion to Lieutenant and Chief Science Officer of the USS Intrepid, those plans have been indefinitely put on hold.
