Personal History

Lucía Ramirez was born on the fourth day in June, a little before midday. She had arrived in her Grandparent’s home following an unexpectedly short labour of just two hours. The second child of the family, Lucía was a precocious tinkerer in comparison to her artistically inclined older brother and her animal obsessed baby sister. Her grandfather Pepe was a handyman by trade and Lucía worshipped him, following at his heels and sitting on his knee as he repaired old appliances and electrical devices. At the tender age of eight, she had taken apart the frame of her bunk beds over the course of an afternoon and with her brothers help in terms of manual labour their mother returned that evening to find two single beds reconstructed side by side from the components.

Whilst Tomas wrote stories and Gabby followed at her mother’s skirts Lucy and her best friend Mira worked on plans for treehouses, built box forts and even a dog house - hoping that the latter might convince Lucy’s mother to let them have a puppy. Initially Cesar and Fátima were indulgent of their daughter’s fascinations, however, following an incident in which both girls broke an arm each after misjudging the strength of an old tree limb as adequate to support the weight of their planned treehouse all of the parents involved agreed that the young women’s activities needed to be better supervised.

She was nine years old when the Borg returned in force to the solar system, Lucía’s immediate family evacuated San Jose, escaping off-world with other refugees from the Borg attack. The family spent a year upon a refugee transport before the Armageddon Directive was rescinded. Lucía spent much of the time aboard ship exploring and following maintenance workers as they roamed the vessel on duty. Eventually, the family were finally able to return home and begin rebuilding their life, though the world they had left behind was all but gone. No evidence could be found of her grandparents’ fate. To her eternal joy, she discovered that Mira’s family had also escaped the widespread destruction left by the Borg.

When Lucía was thirteen years old her Aunt Valeria passed away suddenly, survived by her nine-year-old daughter Maria. Fátima and Cesar adopted Maria as soon as possible, bringing her to live with the family and treating her as one of their own girls. Initially Lucía took little to do with Maria, she had never been close to the girl and dismissed the younger girl as too babyish for her, but with encouragement from her mother Lucy started to include her younger cousin in her life, discovering a similar spirit of adventure and wanderlust in Maria that Gabriela did not seem to possess.

At fourteen both Lucy and Mira attended a class vacation in Oregon and the girls tried rock climbing for the first time. The adrenaline from the climb and the aching muscles that followed an ascent had a profound effect on Lucía, finally, she had found a source of exercise she actually enjoyed. It was to become a passion of hers rivalling her habit for taking apart appliances around the home.

Often Lucía would ask to accompany her mother on visits San Francisco to see the headquarters of Starfleet, and to spot the uniformed crew members and cadets seen so commonly around the city. By the age of fifteen, Lucia had announced her intentions to join Starfleet, to no one's particular surprise. With good grades, she was a decent candidate, but Mira and Lucy both worried that it would be her fitness that let the application process down. To improve her chances Mira and Lucy improved their fitness regime, adding jogging, swimming and cycling to the weekly rock climbing, despite initial grumbling Lucy came to grudgingly admit that she enjoyed the new lifestyle. At the age of nineteen Lucía was accepted to study at Starfleet Academy in the Engineering services. At first, Lucy had found herself unexpectedly shy amongst her peers. As San Jose was only moments away she found every excuse possible to go visit her home or Mira, but after a few months she began to open up to her peers and found herself making fewer and fewer trips off campus.

Intellectually she was competent and confident, if not a particular genius. In practical matters, however, Lucía was in her element. She discovered that she enjoyed nothing more than applying creative problem-solving skills to solve the tasks assigned to her team. During extensive team-working exercises, Lucy became close friends with several other cadets. Amelia Constanza was her closest confidant but, in general, Lucía was popular and tended to bond with her fellow Engineering cadets particularly easily - although she found less common ground with security cadets, unfairly judging many of them as overly serious and stiff.

Physically, the extended training regime she had embarked upon before applying to the Academy had held her in good stead, scoring in the top 10% of her year, above many of the other would be engineers. She continued to climb when she could and in her free time, Lucy discovered a previously undiscovered talent she had for shaping holo-sculptures in the Holodecks. Having never considered herself particularly artistic before the pursuit was a wholly new and rewarding experience for her.

Working and living in such close proximity to other Cadets with similar interests and schedules inevitably led to fraternization. Lucía was not entirely without experience in that area but beyond a troubled on again off again relationship with a fellow cadet lasting over the course of three long months nothing more serious developed.

Toward the end of her time in the Academy Lucía had grown restless, the Federation had been at war with the Krynar when she had joined up, and that war was already over by the time she graduated. The whole galaxy lay just beyond her reach, close enough to touch, a universe to see and experience. With final exams successfully completed and her ship assignment in hand Lucía returned home to be with her family for just one more night before she embarked on the next chapter of her life

They remain close, corresponding frequently, and Mira’s second child is named Lucy after her “Aunt” Lucía.

Amelia Constanza (24) -Amelia was Luca’s closest friend in the academy. Initially, both began as rivals but over time a mutual respect built up. Lucy took Amelia climbing for the first time, in return Amelia taught Lucy to dance. Both come from large Hispanic families and during their time at the Academy Amelia became a common face at the family dinner table in San Jose

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The confusion and fear in fleeing from the Borg attack on Earth, the nights of endless tears when she realised that her grandparents were not with them
Best Time: The night her family and friends sat down to celebrate her enrolment in the Academy, with her sister and her best friend at her side
Most Crucial Experience: Her school trip to Oregon, where she realised that her boundaries in her life were self-imposed and where she pushed herself beyond her quiet life at home and found new challenges, which led directly to her enrolment in Starfleet
Role Model: Pepe Ramirez, her late grandfather, though much of her experience of him is coloured through the prism of childhood loyalty, she nonetheless learned to love engineering and repairing broken things from him. He told her that anything could be fixed if you cared enough to put in the effort and the time
