Personal History

Early Life

Raass grew up on a fringe colony near the Gorn-Romulan border. He enjoyed a normal Gorn childhood, learning to hunt at an early age. While growing up, Raass was teased by his peers for being weak. Raass overcame this taunting by his peers by becoming the strongest Gorn in the settlement. Raass spent many hours a day building his stamina and endurance. He quickly became the strongest, most enduring Gorn in the entire colony. Raass hunted big game creatures with his father and brothers quite frequently. He earned the title of Hunter-Killer at the age of 12, the youngest Gorn to do so in the history of the colony. His life was otherwise uneventful and normal by Gorn standards.

That all changed when Raass was 15. A Romulan Warbird uncloaked in orbit above Raass’ homeworld. The Warbird bombarded the colony and then beamed assault teams to the surface. The Romulan assault teams proceeded to kill all the surviving colonists, save Raass. Raass managed to escape by burrowing into the debris of one of the settlement buildings. As members of one of the assault teams passed by, Raass broke from his hiding place and killed two of the Romulans. He then fled into the surrounding forests and waited until the Romulans had left the ruined settlement. Raass searched the wreckage for survivors but found none. He built pyres for his family and friends, and burned their remains. He then piled the bodies of the other settlers and burned their remains as well. The bodies of the dead Romulans he left to rot. Raass then made his way to the planet’s spaceport. He arrived several weeks later.

Young Adulthood

After living on the streets of the colony’s capital for a few weeks, Raass met the Ship’s Mate of an Orion Pirate vessel. Raass, still suffering from the loss of everything he held dear and stirring with anger at the Romulans, joined the group of pirates. He served as a deckhand aboard the pirate vessel Icara’s Revenge for five years. Shortly after beginning his fifth year aboard the Icara’s Revenge, the ship raided a freighter, bound for Federation space, near Clanhaven.

During the raid on the freighter, the Ship’s Mate ordered the boarding party to kill everyone on board. Raass followed the orders of the Ship’s Mate, and pursued one of the freighter’s crewmen into the ship’s shuttlebay. Raass caught up with the crewman and attacked him. The crewman tried to fight back, but Raass was the superior combatant. Raass grappled with the crewman, and slammed him into the bulkhead. Raass then stabbed the crewman several times between the ribs with his hunting knife. As Raass pulled his knife free of the dying crewman’s body, he saw what he had done: he had killed a fellow Gorn. At that moment Raass realized that he was no better than the Romulans who had butchered his family and friends. Raass then loaded the dead Gorn’s body into one of the nearby shuttles, crammed himself into the pilot’s seat, and piloted the shuttle away from the crippled freighter.

He set a course for Clanhaven. Upon reaching Clanhaven one of the shuttle’s engines failed, sending the shuttle into a corkscrew dive. Raass managed to regain control of the shuttle, but was unable to make a soft landing. The shuttle crashed-landed some distance from the nearest settlement. Raass survived, and used materials form the wrecked shuttle to build a pyre for the dead Gorn. While the last remnants of the funeral pyre smoldered, Raass began walking to the nearby Federation settlement, vowing to redeem himself in his own eyes, and the eyes of his dead ancestors. When he reached the settlement, he found a manual labor job, and became citizen of the Federation. Several months later he applied to Star Fleet Academy and was accepted. A year later he boarded a civilian transport headed for San Francisco, Earth.

First Star Fleet Career

After graduating from the Academy, Raass was assigned to the USS Copernicus. He served aboard the Copernicus with distinction, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and eventually serving as her Chief of Security. During this time, Raass faced and defeated his former pirate captain. With this specter from his past slain, Raass was free to turn his life focus to more than mere redemption. Just prior to the DRR's declaration of independence, Raass was called away to partake in a highly classified mission for Star Fleet Intelligence to rescue members of prominent Romulan family with ties to the fledgling Democratic Romulan Republic from a secret Tal'Shiar detention center. The mission was successful, though at a high cost to the Star Fleet team, including Raass' long-time friend Rurik Feng. Raass himself lost his eyes in the final moments of the fighting and was forced to replace them with ocular implants. Among the hostages rescued were Raass' future wife and her two daughters. He also meet a woman who would come to be his most trusted friend, T'Maekh ei-Rakhoi t'Kiell.

Not long after the rescue mission, Raass was reassigned to the USS Gettysburg, where he served as Marine Commander. He saw action during the Battle of Starbase 157, leading the Marine forces against the Romulan boarding parties. After the battle, he lost his long time girlfriend, Rachael Granger, during an assassination attempted carried out by Tal'Shiar operatives. After the attack, Raass was reassigned to Star Fleet Special Operations Command, serving as Company Commander for Echo Company of the 321st Marine Logistics and Studies Regiment, which was a cover for Marine special operations. During this time, he married T'Eleijha t'Khaell and adopted her daughters, N'alae and Sindari. His assignment to SFSOCOM was short lived as his unit was disbanded after members of Echo Company went rogue, attempting to unleash a bio-weapon in Romulan space after the cease-fire agreement had been signed. Despite successfully eliminating the threat posed by rogue Marines, Raass was relieved of his command and placed on leave.

Career as Smuggler

On Stardate 21002.13, Raass resigned from Star Fleet. He took his wife's family and left the Federation to join T'Maekh's crew, who were still fighting the corrupt Tei-lead RSE government. For approximately one year after resigning from Star Fleet, Raass served with his friend T'Maekh, smuggling goods throughout the DRR and RSE. After a bloody run-in with a rogue Tal'Shiar element, T'Maekh's operation was legitimized by the new Imperial government in exchange for aiding with the evacuation of the Eisn system. With their business now legitimized, Raass become part owner of a new trading company. The new operation, run by T'Maekh, Raass, and T'Maekh's daughter, Areinnye, continued smuggling operations into the DRR and began small scale raiding operations along the volatile Klingon border. T'Maekh ran operations within the RSE and DRR, Areinnye ran operations between the RSE and Federation, and Raass ran the operations into Klingon territory. Their business operations, both legal and not, proved very lucrative.

Return to the Federation

On one legal trade run, Raass found himself caught up in some local color on a small backwater world in the Romulan Neutral Zone. He was detained by the local authorities, who notified both the Starfleet Intelligence and Tal'Shiar stations operating on the neutral world. Both governments requested extradition, with the Romulans offering pardon for a host of minor criminal charges in exchange for Raass collecting intelligence on the Klingons during his business activities there; the Federation gave Raass the choice of returning to Star Fleet and facing a Board of Inquiry for his actions or being handed over to the Klingons, who had a list of crimes against him as long as the USS Enterprise.

From a purely objective viewpoint, the Romulan offer was the best on the table. But it meant becoming a Tal'Shiar agent, and was therefore out of the question. So Raass found himself spending the next three months in the brig, while the JAG office conducted a Board of Inquiry into his case. Apparently, Star Fleet Command had refused Raass' resignation. As Raass had immediately left the Federation after sending in his resignation, Starfleet had had no way of notifying him of their refusal to accept his resignation. As a result, Raass found himself facing charges of being Absent Without Leave, Dereliction of Duty, and Conduct Unbecoming of an Officer. The Dereliction of Duty charge was dropped as Raass had not been assigned to any duty station at the time he went AWOL. The other charges stuck; for the AWOL charge he was demoted from Major to Ensign, and for the Unbecoming Conduct charge he was sentenced to 6 months in the brig. The three months he'd already spent in the brig were declared time served toward his sentence, and he was released on parole for the remainder of the sentence. After the hearings concluded, Raass contacted T'Maekh and Areinnye and made arrangements for Raass to become a silent partner in the business and for one of their trusted lieutenants to take over Raass' arm of the operation.

Second Starfleet Career

On Stardate 21102.19 he was assigned to the Security department aboard the USS Columbia. Raass joined the crew of the Columbia while they were on their first mission, a raid to recover ultritium from Admiral Tei's group of Romulan terrorists. Raass joined the away team, and with the Captain, infiltrated the abandoned facility and engaged the Romulans. For his actions, which included using himself as a living shield to protect the Captain, he was awarded the Star Fleet Achievement Medal.

During the civil unrest on Yadalla Prime, the Columbia was tasked with relocating the Intelligence listening post located on the planet. Raass was assigned to the Security detail sent down with the Captain to facilitate the transport of the personnel and equipment from the planet to the Columbia. The listening post was attacked by the Romulan terrorists plaguing the border region. The terrorists, now organized under new leaders and calling themselves the Uihvueri (the Betrayed), succeeded in capturing the listening post. Hoping to use their captives as leverage to gain access to the Eidolon, the terrorists kept their prisoners alive. Raass managed to free himself and MCPO Char, and with the aid of reinforcements from the Columbia and the rest of the captured personnel (who had managed to free themselves) were successful in retaking the listening post, and capturing the terrorist leading the attack group. For his part in the action, Raass was awarded the Commendation Medal.

After the failed mission to recover intelligence on the Inquisitors, Raass left Starfleet Security, becoming a Tactical Officer. Upon returning to Starbase Bravo, Raass was informed that his wife, T'Eleijha t'Khaell, had been killed in an aircar accident. After attending her funeral service, Raass learned that T'Eleijha's death was not accident, and that she had in fact been targeted by Major Hvirr Taris, a Tal'Shiar operative.

Raass was then selected to join Captain Adaran on a covert mission to eliminate Major Hvirr Taris, the Tal'Shiar operative in charge of supply operations to the Uihvueri. This mission was conducted in conjunction with the Columbia's mission to destroy the main Uihvueri-Tal'Shiar supply depot. While the Columbia's mission failed due to a security leak that alerted the Uihvueri, Raass and Adaran were successful in eliminating Taris, as well as one of the Uihvueri's telepaths. Upon completion of the mission, Raass was promoted to Chief Tactical Officer of the Columbia, as well as receiving a Gold Star. On a personal note, Rhiana t'Kiell, whom Raass had used as bait to draw Taris into the open, gave Raass a Gorn data crystal. The information on the crystal, while badly corrupted, suggested that there may have been other survivors of the attack on Raass home village.

During shoreleave following the covert mission into Romulan space, Raass was awarded the Gold Star for his actions on the covert mission. During the awards ceremony on Starbase Bravo, Raass and the rest of the Columbia crew were suddenly thrown into action. Uihvueri terrorists managed to detonate a very large ultritium based explosive on Starbase Bravo, destroying a large section of the starbase. The crewmembers present survived, but were ina section of the starbase adjacent to the destroyed sections. They were forced to evacuate themselves and multiple civilians from that section to a safer location. Raass was awarded his second Gold Star for his part in the rescue effort.

In the aftermath of the attack on Starbase Bravo, Raass was called in to help plan a rescue operation of an Intelligence operative who had been stranded in the Neutral Zone after the Tal’Shiar had seized control of it and sealed the border. After seeing the mission launched, Raass then took the time to run down the leads discovered on the data crystal t’Kiell had given him. He discovered hard evidence of the existence of at least one other survivor of the attack on his home village: Grilisska’carresh, his childhood sweetheart.

After the attack on Starbase Bravo, the Columbia was sent out on another covert mission deep into Tal’shiar controlled space. The mission was to rescue a captured Intelligence Officer from a secret Tal’Shiar base. The mission was compromised soon after the Columbia’s arrival at the station, as the Uihvueri had already arrived to destroy the base themselves, indicating a rift between the terrorists and the Tal’Shiar. Despite Uihvueri resistance, the Columbia crew was able to execute the mission. Bravo-2 was deployed to the station, and successfully retrieved the captured officer. The Intelligence Officer had been compromised by the Uihvueri and turned into a pawn. The terrorists used the operative to eliminate all personnel on the Tal’Shiar station and then destroy it. Bravo-2 was able to rescue the agent and get off the station before it self-destructed. Meanwhile, the Columbia was able to fight off multiple Uihvueri ships long enough for Bravo-2 to do their job and get clear of the station. Despite heavy sensor interference and moderate battle damage, Raass was able to inflict damage on the enemy ships, until Kemarrin’s skillful piloting allowed the Columbia to draw the enemy ships into the blast radius of the Tal’Shiar station. Two of the enemy ships were destroyed by the destruction of the station, and the other ship fled. The Columbia then returned home. During the mission, it was also discovered that LCdr West had been the Uihvueri pawn aboard Columbia, and he had been activated to actively sabotage the Columbia during the battle. He was subdued and confined to the Brig. For his actions during the battle with the Uihvueri ships, Giraath was awarded a Commendation Medal.

On route back to Starbase Bravo, the Columbia was diverted to Earth, as the Krynar (the aliens once known as the Inquisitors) had arrived at in the Sol system. For reasons unknown, they left the Sol system almost immediately afterward. However, the Columbia was then tasked to join the Fleet in the Tellar system, as part of a major offensive to liberate Tellar Prime from the Krynar Inquisition. The Columbia was tasked with capturing the Tellarite President, CINiC, and Chief Science Minister. The Columbia crew was divided into two teams to accomplish the task, as they were able to beam the Science Minister aboard the ship. Raass went in with Blue Team, the team tasked with capturing Tellarite President Harrak. Giraath’s team, led by Commander Macleod, was successful in their objective. Red Team, led by Captain Adaran, was unable to achieve their objective, as General B’con, the Tellarite CINiC, had committed suicide after being released from Krynar Enlightenment. On the whole, the Liberation of Tellar Prime was a resounding success, with the Krynar taking their heavy losses to date, and completely withdrawing from Federation space, freeing the Enlightened populations they had abandoned. After the Battle of Tellar, Raass was promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: When Raass was 15, a Romulan Warbird uncloaked in orbit above

Raass’ homeworld, and attacked Raass’ home village. The Romulans killed everyone in the village except Raass, including his family and friends. After the attack, Raass searched the wreckage for survivors, but found none. He built pyres for his family and friends, and burned their remains. He then piled the bodies of the other settlers and burned their remains as well. Raass has never told a living soul about what happened. UPDATE (Stardate 21002.13): Rachael Granger's murder at the hands of Romulan agents.
Best Time: The best time Raass has ever had was when he and his brothers went hunting in the vast forests surrounding their home. They had tracked a particularly large, carnivorous reptile (referred to by the colonists as “blood beasts”) deep into the forest. After weeks of hunting the beast, Raass and his brothers finally cornered the creature in a densely forested box canyon. The blood beast, with nowhere to run, attacked Raass and his brothers, slightly injuring Tor’giraath, Raass’ older brother. Raass and his brothers fought the beast for several hours, wounding it many times before the beast broke through a patch of dense forest, and tried making its escape. As the beast broke through the trees, it bowled over both of Raass’ brothers, leaving Raass directly in its path. The beast stopped for a moment before charging Raass. Raass held his ground as the beast charged, and killed it with his bone-handled hunting knife. Raass and his brothers then skinned the beast. Raass now wears part of the creature’s hide as his favorite tunic.
Most Crucial Experience: There are two most crucial experiences in Raass’ life. The first was the death of his family and friends at the hands of the Romulans. This event cultivated the prejudices Raass has against Romulans. The second was the day he killed a fellow Gorn. This experience has a rude awakening for Raass. He realized that he had become just like the Romulans that had murdered his family.
Role Model: Tor’giraath, Raass’ older brother. Tor’giraath served as the First Officer aboard a Gorn cruiser. He exemplified the Gorn Navy’s dedication to protecting Gorn space from hostile races, the Romulans in particular.
