Personal History

In the province of New Galway, on the Bringloidi continent of Mariposa where Sixtus Quinn was born, there was still a heavy cultural independence from technology. She lived with her father and his wife on a small sheep ranch shared by her mother and her own husband. Between the siblings, half siblings, and step siblings, there were 11 kids growing up with her, of which she was second youngest. Although alliances, and feuds rose and fell between them all the time, they were all fiercely loyal to each other No insult ever went ignored, un-retaliated, or unforgiven.

The near-closed community maintained certain recessive traits, such as her red hair and emerald eyes, but it also preserved and gifted her with Chiari Malformation, a rare genetic trait where her skull is too thick causing her brain to grow into her spinal canal. Due to her culture’s aversion to technology, her condition to go undiagnosed until she was 10 years old and she had begun to show symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, nosebleeds, and seizures. When it was discovered, she was taken to the nearest starbase for treatment. She remained there for 6 months during which she was constantly in awe of and fascinated by all of the computers, machines, and tech around her. For the next 6 years, she spent half the year home with her family, and the other half on the starbase receiving treatments, surgeries, and close observation.

During these years, she was kept from any even slightly strenuous activities that all her siblings and other children on the station enjoyed due to the very real danger of injury to her softened skull, her constant dizziness and her loss of balance. For some time she was depressed and withdrawn until a Starfleet counselor named Talam Brar began encouraging her to use the time she was gifted with to “fill her mind”. She spent her time on the starbase learning as much as she could about how all of this amazing technology worked. She devoured technical journals and papers ravenously, and in her school on board the station she consistently scored near the top of the class. While at home, where her technical journals were frowned upon, her mother sat with her and taught her sewing, cutting and shaping cloth, and the finer points of seamstress skills; while her father gave her his own father’s violin. She loved the freedom that making music allowed, and split her practice between classical works and more traditional Bringloidi folk songs. And so she passed her childhood, learning as much as she could while on the starbase, and filling her life with music and her culture at home.

When she was fully grown (age 18) she was given her final treatment to reinforce and close off the open segments of her skull, and she was finally able to partake in more strenuous and physical activities. Since then, daily workouts at the gym have consistently reinforced her sense of normalcy, as well as toning and shaping her formerly skinny (almost emaciated) physique into the body of a gymnast. She tried to rejoin ‘normal’ Bringloidi society, but her fascination with Federation technology and her love of finding out how stuff works soon led her to approach her family about the prospect of joining starfleet. To her surprise, they were generally supportive, and once her Ma was convinced, she submitted her application.

Starfleet Academy turned out to be a mixed bag of experiences for Sixtus. She loved the academy, she adored her classes, and could not learn enough of this new information. The cultural differences however were demoralizing for her for some time. As nice as people were (and nice seemed to be the Federation standard) she couldn’t help but feel looked down on because of her anachronistic background. No one ever did anything so crass as to say it outright but some differences, most significantly the stance on owning and raising animals, were so integrated in both cultures into completely opposite beliefs that it made it hard for her to not feel quietly censured. Furthermore, the ‘how quaint’ way people tended to react whenever she told of her culture and home left her feeling embarrassed of both.

A few months before the end of her first year she received her first care package from home filled with food, clothes, books, and letters from just about everyone she ever met. It was then she realised that if someone didn’t understand or admire Bringloidi culture, it was their loss. From then on she wore her heritage proudly.

In the summer break after her first year, her search for a good bottle of whiskey took her to Ireland where she not only found her whiskey, but also met some distant relatives of her ancestors who left on the original Mariposa. From then on, she would return there every opportunity; a small slice of home one this alien world.

Academically, the ideas and theories came to her fairly easily, but she had to study twice as hard to be able to easily recall the names of every single new ‘thing’ she was learning about. These pathways were not easily made in her brain, so she came up with rhymes, anagrams, limericks, and short songs to help her recall everything. This led to her humming quietly to herself through most of her practical application tests, a habit pointed out by her classmates and instructors alike. Where she had the most trouble was with proper names. People, places, starships and the like, no matter how important it was to her classwork, she could never seem to remember any of their names. So while the concepts and principles of engineering came to Sixtus naturally, her memory problem kept her from achieving real academic success and leaving her to graduate in the bottom of the top third of the class.

After she made peace with herself and her heritage, she found making friends in the Academy quite easy. Her free time was split fairly evenly between her string sextet, her ‘culturally inclusive’ folk music club, and reading any ‘new’ literature she could get her hands on. She also loved introducing her friends to true ‘pub culture’. Most of all, though, she liked just talking to people from all over the quadrant. Learning about their lives, histories, backgrounds, and the unique way those differences led them to view the world they shared.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Fine Arts, Survival
Hobbies and Pastimes: Playing the violin (both classically and more traditional folk fiddling); Sewing clothes, accessories, and decorations. Reading, reading, reading.
Short-Term Goals: Her short term goals aside from integrating herself well into Starfleet culture. She is very interested in finding a string quartet to play with, and she rather hopes to start a traditional folk music group, focusing on the musical cultures of the members. Also, she wouldn’t tell anyone, but she wants to learn to ride a horse.
Long-Term Goals: Her ideal profession is to become the Chief Engineer on a deep exploration starship; far from known federation space, where any breakdowns or problems will have to be fixed or corrected with whatever is onhand. In her mind, this is the pinnacle of Starfleet careers.
Personality: Sixtus is deeply influenced by her Bringloidi heritage. Her personal style, her love of music, her work ethic and her morels all stem from her culture. She is proud, but not prideful, she has a temper, but she is not hot-headed. One of the many lessons that Talan Brar taught her was that every bad feeling, be it humiliation, anger, regret, guilt (or any number of others) was a signal for a learning opportunity. She smiles when she tells stories, she hums when she works, and if you have offended her, the fire that flares in her eyes terrifying. Mostly she wants everyone around her to be their best selves, happy and validated.

Bringloidi do have a propensity towards constant honesty. They tend not to hide how they feel, whether they are happy with, attracted to, or furious at you you will undoubtedly know it.
Sense of Humor: She has a quick wit, vicious sarcasm, and has been known to have a dark sense of humor at times, but generally she genuinely loves people around her to be happy, and to that end, she had learned not to say most of the acerbic remarks that pop into her head whenever people speak.
Phobias: Transporters. As much as she loves technology, the transporters were the one thing she has never been able to wrap her mind around. She is sure that being transported is to be utterly destroyed then to have a copy placed in the destination with her memories. So far, she has avoided ever having to use a transporter, but her biggest fear is being forced (by the situation or by a commanding officer) to travel via transporter beam. Then it would be “Goodbye Sixtus Quinn, hello Sixtus Quinn 2.0”. Other things may frighten or unnerve her, but going into a transporter beam will bring on a sweating, nausea, and lightheadedness; up to a full blown panic attack the closer the transport comes to reality.
Likes: Sixtus is always reading books of all sorts. She could never get used to reading on a PADD, so still has a stash of hard copy paper books filling her quarters. She loves the works of Brahms, Bach, and Vivaldi, to listen to or play along with. Her dog Bud is her best friend / confidant. Her biggest thrill is finding out how something new works. Also, a nice cup of tea. Tea is a vital part of Bringloidi society, and she can not have a visiter in her quarters without offering a nice cuppa. She absolutely loves the game Terrace; it is her favorite social activity. (Second, after imbibing.)
Dislikes: Replicated food?! Oh it is SO bland and tasteless it borders on inedible. If given the opportunity, she will always choose to prepare her own food. She still has some trouble understanding why most Federation species will not eat real meat. Having grown up on a sheep ranch, she has known her share of animals that they have ended up eating, and she never considered their lives cruel or depressing. Cultural differences… huh.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: What you people call food isn’t food. What you people call whiskey isn’t whiskey. STOP calling it that! She also cringes whenever someone tries to convince her that keeping trying to convince her ‘enslaving’ animals for food, is morally reprehensible.
Achievements: She played with the commander of Starbase 416 for hundreds of crew and visiting dignitaries. She won a minor New Galway literary award for a short story based on one of her ‘tall tales’. She also has a “Mariposa’s Best Sister” plaque; it has a lot of glitter and macaroni on on it, but it is still one of her most cherished possessions.
Disappointments: There were several things Sixtus missed out on in her childhood, but nothing truly stung as much as watching each of her siblings being taught to care for, ride, and eventually given their own horses.
Illnesses: Aside from Chiari Malformation and the resulting Anomic Aphasia, she was a rather healthy child.
Strengths: She will never give up on a problem presented to her. Long after more sensible minds have written it off as unsolvable or impossible, Sixtus will be there trying new and more outlandish solutions. She has a few notebooks (paper. Always paper) filled with notes and conjectures about riddles and conundrums that have vexed her. She is also fiercely loyal to friends, family, and crew.
Weaknesses: While the damage done to her brain was for the most part repaired, it had left her with a condition (anomic aphasia) that causes her to sometimes have difficulty recalling words. Though years of therapy and training have significantly improved her ability to recall her internal dictionary, she still has endless trouble remembering names, leading her to call people by nicknames (Boss, Champ, Buddy, Lass etc.). Also in times of high stress, she may blank on a specific noun, causing a frustrated “Hand me the… thing on the… the thing!”, but these moments are uncommon. It is also worth mentioning that she does have a ‘typical’ fiery Bringloidi temper. “Hell hath no fury like a Bringloidi woman scorned.” Her childhood of constant fear that the slightest tap could collapse her skull has ‘trained’ any violent outbursts, but she’ll still find ways to… divest herself of her anger.
Fears: Her most constant fear is of not being able to keep up with her class and crew, either because of her anomic aphasia makes it hard to remember everything’s names, or because her upbringing was so very removed from all technology, it left her to start her education behind most of the other students who have had years more time to understand the concepts behind engineering.
Prejudices: She despises the existence of telepathy. She considers it an absolute breach of privacy. The idea of her personal thoughts being ‘read’ or ‘heard’ is such a violation, and having another’s ‘voice’ in her head, even just to say hello, is abhorrent. Because of this, she has a deep distrust of telepathic races in general and Betazoids specifically. She tries not to show it, or even acknowledge it, but she can’t help but see them as untrustworthy voyeurs.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Sixtus’ clothing style is heavily based on her Bringloidi heritage. If relaxing, practicing violin, or socializing, she wears a colorful ‘gypsy’ skirt with a matching head scarf (folded to a thick headband), and a white, tan, or cream peasant blouse. On shore leave, she would wear black loose legged pants tucked into her boots, a colorful sash with a matching head scarf (full head; her hair in a braid) and a tan, cream, or white peasant blouse. If she is working on a project, she wears cargo pants (pockets stuffed with tools), with a simple tank top, but still wearing a colorful bandana folded across her forehead; her hair in a braid.
Pets: Bud - Dog, purebred mutt [sic.]
Friends: Suvash is her workout buddy, sparring partner, and best friend. Lieutenant Talan Brar is her childhood mentor with whom she still has a weekly correspondence.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The worst physical pain she has ever experienced was the blindingly painful headaches that came with the onset of her Chiari malformation. They lasted between 5 and 30 minutes, and there was no escaping the pain until it ebbed.

In terms of emotional pain, the most difficult thing to bear was her sister Medb’s wedding. When Sixtus was 14, her older sister Medb was married to Kevric Coran in a beautiful ceremony that brought together family from all across Mariposa. That night stories were made that would be told for centuries, but Sixtus Quinn was lying on an operating table 257 light years away having her skull methodically broken and reformed. When she awoke in recovery she felt alone in the universe. It was as if she were no longer a part of her own planet, culture, or indeed family. Looking back she would say that Talan was right; this deep sense of loss had been her learning that she was to have a life outside everything she had known. Still, it makes her tear up to tell the story.
Best Time: for her 16th birthday, Talan Brar arranged for her to play in a concert for the starbase. She was absolutely elated when the station commander took stage to play cello. They played Brahms String sextet no.1 in B-flat Major, Op.18. It was possibly the best 10 minutes of her life.
Most Crucial Experience: After missing her sister’s wedding, she flipped through the (paper. Always paper) letters from her family describing the wedding and felt detached and alone. As she read, a technician arrived to fix a lighting unit. It had stopped working, and nothing she had done could make it work again, yet the technician opened it, repaired it, and closed it all within 90 seconds. “How did ye do that?” she had whispered, to which he responded simply that he learned it in the academy. In that moment, having been alienated from her family, and seeing what frustrated her coming so easily to someone from this “Academy”, she felt an epiphany. Here was not just a calling, but a destiny.
Role Model: Talan Brir, once her counselor now her mentor, is the Federation citizen she wished to emulate most; he was wise, compassionate, and kind, always seeing the best in people.

Her favorite historical figure was Zephram Cochrane. He made a warp drive from scratch! He figured out what needed to be done, and he built it. He is her personal hero.
