Personal History

- Childhood: born to an overall traditional Andorian family, they relocated when he was five years old to a joint scientific outpost with Vulcans. The outpost was an experiment, in and of itself, to see if the two groups of people could live and work in harmony, instead of keeping each other at proverbial swordpoint. It was not just to be a social experiment, but, a means for the two species to learn from each others' methods. Depending on whom you ask on each of the homeworlds, you might hear that it was a waste of time and resources, that it went well, or that it was a bit of a washout. The actual truth lies somewhere in the middle of that; for the most part, the initial years were rough as each group learned how to work with each other and not against each other. Tempers, yes, even amongst the Vulcans, occasionally flared. Thankfully, the delegation leaders chosen for the outpost wound up being the smartest choice of all, since they knew not only how to ease the concerns of their own contingent, but, how to communicate with their counterpart and form a partnership. Ris' parents were sent as research assistants (father) and reliable field worker for tests and samples (mother). It was during this time that Ris came to develop a fondness for teal - a color that blended the blue of Andorians and the green of Vulcans.

- Adolescence/education: Andorians pride themselves on their martial prowess, which is certainly well-earned. Ris struggled with reconciling that martial history with his passion for learning and science. As such, he initially hid his interests from people, even his parents, because they had lamented on occasion about their own lack of contributions in the military arena. When it came time to apply to the appropriate academy on Andoria, he knew that whatever he pursued he would likely be locked into for several years. Knowing he would be miserable if he didn't stay true to himself, he made it clear to his parents that he wanted to go into scientific pursuits. Their reaction was mixed - concern for how the Andorian society, as a whole, would view him, yet pride in his conviction and interest in a more intellectually honest path.

- Academy: his familiarity and comfort with Vulcans provided him with social opportunities at the Academy than he might otherwise have enjoyed. Although it took a little bit of time to dust off his rudimentary skill with the Vulcan language, his heartfelt intent carried through and eventually won over some of his classmates. Unfortunately, not all of his fellow Andorians understood; despite both planets having been founding members of the Federation and united under that banner for decades, there still remained some of the old friction and prejudices. Some of them either shunned him, or did their best to needle him with remarks intended to bruise his ego. Surprisingly, he was able to apply some of the tenets of logic to those situations, and kept his temper under control. It didn't hurt that he was aware that any sort of fighting amongst cadets was one of the quicker ways to get yourself marked down as a trouble case, and scrutinized for continued enrollment. It was during this time he met T'rohhna, who encouraged him to step outside his comfort zones when it came to self-expression. Both felt that there was chemistry between them, and discussed the possibility of becoming romantically involved; in the end, both felt that the timing wasn't right.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Science
Academy Minor(s): Physics (Electromagnetic radiation, thermodynamics)
Hobbies and Pastimes: oil paintings (abstract); listening to different cultures' analogues of fusion jazz
Short-Term Goals: Going on an away mission as a mission specialist; getting to study EM interactions, especially anomalies
Long-Term Goals: Away team lead; diplomatic aide
Personality: Gregarious, though in a muted way; they enjoy the company of people, but, are not typically the "loud" one; stoic, but not made of stone
Sense of Humor: Ris appreciates clever wordplay, and jokes that aren't just "low-hanging fruit"; there's a time and a place for said jokes, sure, but, not as a staple
Phobias: untreatable parasites, or irreversible conditions
Likes: music that taps into emotion more so than technique; any fiction media (print or visual) that rewards an intelligent viewer/reader, that doesn't spoon-feed the solution/answer
Dislikes: inane, "brain dead" social trends
Pet Peeves or Gripes: small talk in the sense of it just being used to fill time; pleasantries are good, the obligatory "social checklist" of conversations annoys him. A lot. In order for a conversation to be of interest to him, there has to be some intellectual or emotional investment within
Bad Habits or Vices: when particularly nervous or unsure, he fiddles with the end of his pony tail, and/or cracks his neck
Achievements: helped pave the way for more joint Andorian/Vulcan social activities at the Academy
Disappointments: that his and T'rohhna's feelings for each other just aren't a realistic priority for each other at this stage of their lives
Illnesses: is actually allergic to Andorian ale
Strengths: can usually remain level-headed when others might allow their tempers to take over; despite his dislike of "small talk", he usually does well in making people feel welcome
Weaknesses: : he's joked that he could burn ice cubes; while he's not that inept when cooking, he sticks to very basic, easy to follow recipes (the replicator is his friend)
Fears: being trapped in a hot, dry area with no means of saving himself
Prejudices: even if he logically understands the role counselors play, he's still uncomfortable around them, no matter what species they are
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: very casual, tending towards greens, blues, and the occasional yellows; cut to allow freedom of movement
Distinguishing Features: his right antenna is very slightly bent forward near the tip
Pets: : white ferret, "Squall"
Friends: T'rohhna, Vulcan classmate that encouraged him to dye his hair and paint his nails
Referrer: Returning player

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: finding out that one of your favorite Vulcan mentors while at the outpost in your childhood was actually a Romulan spy sent to sabotage the effort
Best Time: getting to be a part of the cadet group assisting in the study of a new quasar, and studying its output in the EM spectrum
Most Crucial Experience: being able to connect some of the lessons (methods, techniques) he absorbed/learned as a child at the outpost with similar subjects he discussed with his Vulcan peers in the Academy; of primary importance was the lesson that you can always learn something from someone when it comes to science and research
Role Model: both of his parents, for being resilient in the face of difficult or challenging circumstances, and sharing with him not just their knowledge of science, but, their love for it.
