Prototype is the term used for the first working model of a new invention, used for trial runs.
- The first model is considered experimental only, and is not intended to be the final version of the thing in question.
Examples:
- Early Starfleet prototype ships had an "NX" classification as their prefix, such as the Enterprise NX-01.
- In 2371, the Obsidian Order created a prototype of a quantum stasis field. It was intended to prevent a Changeling from altering its shape.
- Dr. Soong created several prototype androids before creating his "sons", Lore and Data.
