The Phylosians are a species of sentient plants, native to the planet Phylos.

Before meeting the Federation, the Phylosians had developed into a technologically-advanced, warp-capable civilization.

They have a naturally long lifespan, which is further extended by their greatly-advanced medical science.

At some point in their history, the Phylosians set about the self-appointed task of enforcing peace in the galaxy. They built a fleet of large ships with this intention, though events intervened and pointed them elsewhere.

During the 21st century, a human scientist visited Phylos in search of "the perfect specimen" for continuing eugenics research. However, this scientist was a carrier of a non-native bacteria that nearly destroyed all life on Phylos. Working to save the Phylosians, he was able to create many clones of himself in an attempt to undo the damage he caused. The Phylosians eventually referred to this scientist as "the Master." When it became known that the human had the same goal of imposing peace throughout the galaxy with a master race of clones, the Phylosians agreed to help his mission in acquiring the perfect specimen to copy.

When the USS Enterprise visited Phylos in 2269, the fifth clone of the original human scientist chose Spock as his "perfect specimen." He cloned the Vulcan, creating "Spock Two." However, the so-called 'galactic chaos' no longer existed, thanks in part to the Federation. Giving up that long-awaited plan, the two clones instead stayed on Phylos, planning to work on saving the Phylosian species.

By 2380, Starfleet had at least one female Phylosian in its ranks, serving as a tactical officer.
