These medicines are used to prevent a subject from feeling pain during medical or surgical procedures. Types of anesthetics include:
A small amount of medicine is injected in the area to be worked on. The subject remains fully conscious but feels no pain. Useful for minor procedures.
Anesthesia involving a larger portion of the body, ie: the entire arm or leg. The patient still remains conscious.
Used for major procedures and with very uncooperative patients. Drugs render the patient unconscious. The airway and respirations may need to be maintained artificially. General anesthesia carries a small but real risk of complications including death.
It should be noted that the Delta wave generator is normally used to render a patient unconscious. However, medical staff should be familiar with these medications as well.

This class of psychoactive medications seeks to dull the senses most commonly in an individual who is over stimulated or suffering extreme physical or emotional distress. The dose can be adjusted to provide mild relaxation all the way to deep coma-like sleep.

These work by altering the levels of certain neuro-transmitting chemicals within the brain. This class of drug includes antidepressants which can help restore the emotional and physical health of a patient affected by depression, anxiety or severe phobia.
