Personal History

Born as the youngest of the Petit family in Caen, Noel was given far more latitude than their older siblings in choosing what to do throughout their life, given that the others would be in better standing to continue their parent’s careers as local traders and middlemen. They used that extra latitude to learn more about the stars above them in France, as well as playacting the part of an explorer with their friends while still a child.. Still, as a member of the family, they were expected to perform a role within the company owned by the Petit for their trading ventures as they grew older. Noel did participate in gradually more serious administrative duties throughout their internship, though never more than what would adequately serve a local branch of their parent’s company before they made a resolution to escape this responsibility.

It was during their official internship for the company after coming of age that Noel started being meaningfully exposed to the world outside of Caen and the Petit’s company. Their exposure to more alien cultures through accompanying employees on trade negotiations and speaking with people about their age from other species and cultures. It was a long internship where Noel was introduced to partners both within and without the company to expose them to the way it all worked and to help them decide how they would best help the family and company. In a way, it was far more beneficial for Noel than the years of learning beforehand as they dove headfirst into the different cultures and even subcultures of both human and non-human societies. Eventually, the faint feelings they struggled with their entire life solidified into a sort of wanderlust and fascination about people and the stars they sailed among.

It also encouraged a nascent sense of rebellion against the status quo of their life, which came out as choosing to leave the company instead. As the youngest, it was a disappointment to their family but not one that was grievously so. There were enough Petits that Noel had the privilege to chase their dreams over duty to the family and this was not begrudged them, as far as Noel knows at least. It seemed natural to Noel that the next step would be Starfleet in order to fulfill a childhood dream of exploring space and they applied within a week of making the decision.

They failed the entrance exam twice, the second time by an incredibly narrow margin. The third time was the charm, however, and they started the Academy the following semester. Their initial focus was the soft sciences, particularly Sociology, before finding that they were well suited to the maths and focus needed for the rigorous Astronomy and Astrophysics courses. This led them naturally into the career focus on Stellar Cartography – mapping the stars, and like their personal identity, they perceived that path as fitting them like a glove. They didn’t quite pass with honors like they intended, but did well enough to secure commendations from some professors.

Upon graduation, their first assignment was to a deep space observatory to assist with studying local stellar phenomenon. They soon itched for something more exciting, sensing that change would be needed to give them the challenges they need and began requesting reassignment to a ship or at least a different station.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Noel was attacked by a large dog while visiting a client with their father as a teenager, inspiring the lifelong fear of similarly large aggressive creatures.
Best Time: Their studies at the Academy – it put them in touch with such a wide variety of people and gave them access to an incredible font of knowledge to exploit.
Most Crucial Experience: The internship with the Petit trading company. While they learned a lot about the business, they also learned more about themselves and it ultimately led them to Star Fleet.
Role Model: Their parents, particularly their mother who runs much of the back-end of the company and gave Noel room they needed to grow as a person.
