Her roommate from the Academy, a human woman named Tina. Tara was born on Earth to her Vulcan mother and Human father. Her mother, whose parents like her were also scientist, was raised on Earth and eventually fell in love with a Human male. Because of this Tara was not raised to control her emotions completely. Most of her control techniques were taught to her by her Vulcan grandparents, who she spent a lot of time with. Because of this she acts mostly human.
Due to so many of her relatives being so highly educated and dedicated to the sciences Tara did very well in school and graduated at the top of her high school class. Tara was therefore a shoe in for Star Fleet Academy where she decided to attend. Her parents were not ecstatic about her choice, but recognized the great scientific education she would receive and therefore sent her to the Academy with blessings.
Tara was easily excelling at the Academy and was always having a friendly battle with her roommate for top of the class honors. During her second year at the Academy Tara and her roommate were approached by an Admiral from Star Fleet Security. The Admiral made them an interesting offer to take their knowledge of the sciences and apply in toward a career in security. Initially Tara rejected the offer outright, thinking the idea was dumb, however after a couple of meetings with the Admiral Tara was convinced.
For her third year Tara began taking double the classes she normally would. She continued her science education, but the majority of her classes now revolved around security as well. At first it was a tough transition for Tara and it took her nearly a year to begin to excel at the actual physical side of security. During that year she also gained the respect of the other security cadets, which was made up mostly of men. It was during this time that she gained the nickname Petey.
After her fifth year at the Academy Tara graduated with majors in both science and security and was named an Ensign, which was a rarity, and assigned to a refit of a Sun-Tzu classed Destroyer. During the shakedown cruise for the vessel that several of the crewmembers had coined “The 44” they were redirected to SB-157 were they took on the crew of the USS Sheridan who assumed command of the 44 and integrated the shakedown crew into their own.
