Personal History

Early Life

Peter's childhood is written in bulkheads and jeffries' tubes. Though he was born on Earth, during a brief leave of absence his father took, he grew up on various starships, following his father's' different postings. His parents often regretted that they had to move around so much, but they knew that this was the life of Starfleet families. Peter has never been quick to make friends, always preferring reading, studying, and playing by himself on the Holodeck. His social awkwardness got better as he grew older, but he is still rather introverted.

Growing up on the USS Europa, Peter has known nothing but life in space all of his life, except for the years at the Academy. Living on Earth, being able to go outside and enjoy fresh air, real fresh air – not just simulated, was a new and intoxicating feeling. But life aboard the Europa was generally a good one, despite his introversion. He didn't make many friends, but the few he made he clung to, and became very close with. He was almost always at the top of his class at school, but often found himself frustrated that he seemed to be missing something, or not quite getting what the others found so great about going to the holodeck to pretend to watch a movie in an ancient ”movie theater” when they could play a holo-novel and be part of the story instead. There were plenty of things Peter didn't understand about social graces, but he did understand the concept of loyalty, and he has always been fiercely loyal to the few friends he did get.

Starfleet is in his blood, so to speak, as he comes from a long line of Starfleet personnel, on his father's side, going all the way back to the birth of the Federation. Peter always knew that he was going to go into Starfleet, but what sets him apart from the rest of the family line, is the fact that he is the first Officer in the family. All through his childhood he heard his father occasionally grumble about how the officers didn't ”understand what it's really like”, but Peter never shared his father's ambivalent attitude to officers. And when his father was assigned to Starfleet Headquarters five years ago, Peter knew that he wanted to go to the Academy. Despite initial resistance from his father, who wanted Peter to follow in his footsteps as enlisted, the hard work, effort and long hours Peter put in - taking not one but two majors, in addition to his minors and extra-curricular activities, such as captaining the Freshman Soccer Team – convinced the aging CPO that his son was going to be one of the rare good officers. And now that he has graduated around the top of his class, Peter has made his family proud. He hopes to continue to do so, and to establish a new tradition: That his descendants will choose the Academy too. It took a long while before anyone managed to coax out of Peter why he decided to break with centuries of family tradition, and go for officer's training rather than simply enlist. In the end, he tired of being nagged about it, and, though not entirely in the calm, collected way that he had intended to eventually break the story, reminded his parents of a particular incident that had taken place on the Europa some years ago:

It had been touch-and-go for quite a while. Though not the ”hostile intruder, all hands on deck”-situation that was so popular in holo programs, it had been equally serious but much less heroic. Some crewman in Engineering had made a critical error and rather than vent the plasma away from the warm core, had channeled it towards it, causing a dangerous overheating of the reactor core, threatening to blow up the ship. All of this was something that Peter had been informed of afterwards, when the scattered escape pods had been retrieved and everyone returned to what amounted to ”normal life” aboard a starship. An enlisted man had made a nearly fatal error, and it was a Starfleet Officer who corrected it:

During the evacuation, after the Captain had ordered all hands to abandon ship, and informed them that this was most certainly not a drill, everything was chaos and panic. Enlisted and civilians were crowding the corridors trying to get to the escape pods before the ship blew. Peter's father was very efficient in getting his family to the nearest pods, but could not overpower several other crewmen by himself. It was just as they were about to be shoved away from their pod by a Science Petty Officer, that Peter noticed a young Engineering Lieutenant, an Andorian, who noticed the spectacle, rushed over and shoved the PO away before she raised her voice, and fired her phaser, set to the lowest level, into the air to get everyone's attention. Taking control of the situation, she reminded everyone that they were Starfleet, not savages, and that the evacuation would proceed orderly. Her force of personality somehow managed to impose order on chaos, and the evacuation was, although not less hasty, much more orderly. It was when everyone was in their pods, and a Commander ordered the Lieutenant to go into the pods as well, that she looked at him, and then all of a sudden shoved him into the nearest escape pod and sealed the door, and punched the launch button to send it flying. Peter and his family were in the very next pod, so he got a perfect view of all of this. The last thing he saw and heard before his own pod was sealed shut and launched, was the young woman looking at him, her smile and her voice saying: ”Don't worry young man. I'm not going to let this ship go down”, after which she punched the seal-and-launch-button of all the escape pods in the area.

It didn't take more than ten-to-fifteen minutes before all the pods were collected again. That's when the full story had been given, by the Captain who had planned to go down with his ship, and had observed from the bridge sensors and ship wide camera system: That Lieutenant Vethi Zh'azaalan had entered Engineering without any kind of protective suit, as there was no time, and had attempted to redirect the plasma flow away from the core. When she realized that all the automatic systems were down, she knew that she would have to redirect the flow manually. She had taken a deep breath, looked down for a moment, before she had approached the burning core, each step agonizingly hot, exponentially more than the previous, and, lowering her head away from the core to keep it from melting her eyes before she could finish her task, she manually directed the flow of the plasma away from the core and into the room instead. She barely managed to do so before she lost the use of her hands, her flesh melting away under her due to the intense heat, her head already having been split open, her antennae gone and her sense of balance along with them. When she finished the job, she happened to be standing right in the way of the redirected plasma stream, and bore the full brunt of it. Only parts of her lower body was left.

It took the crew quite a while to absorb what had happened, and though Lt. Zh'azaalan was posthumously honored with the Starfleet Medal of Valor, her loss was felt by the entire crew. This was the defining episode in Peter's decision to eventually go to the Academy: When everyone else, enlisted and civilians, had almost trampled each other to death in a wild panic, a Starfleet Officer had kept calm, saved everyone, before sacrificing herself to save her comrades. This incident left an indelible mark on Peter, and though he of course knew that not all crewmen were as stupid as the one who had caused this incident (the crewman in question was subsequently arrested, and court-martialed, charged with criminal negligence and incompetence, and dishonorably discharged without pay or privileges), he only needed to look to his own father to prove that, he had seen panic in his father's eyes as they were heading for the pod. He hadn't known what to do, and if Lt Zh'azaalan hadn't come along, a fight would have broken out that would have gotten everyone killed. Of course he hasn't mentioned this part of the story to anyone, especially not his father, but this was the moment that Peter learned that in order to truly be able to rise above and do his part to protect the Federation he had been taught to cherish and love from before he could speak, he would need to become an officer. He still knew, intellectually, that just as there were valorous enlisted personnel, there were stupid and cowardly officers. But he also knew that he would combine the best of both worlds.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security (Combat Operations), Tactical (Starship Command)
Academy Minor(s): Military Tactics (Tactical?), Emergency Engineering 101 (Engineering)
Hobbies and Pastimes: Peter likes to read, especially old Earth literature, but he has also taken a liking to some parts of Klingon and Andorian literature. The tales of the lone warrior who beats the odds and rises to fame and glory, is among his favorite topics.

He also likes thrillers and horror, though, and among his other ways of spending free time, is recreating some of history's greatest battles, both from fiction and real history, on the Holodeck. At the moment, his favorite scenarios are The Battle of the Trident, where he serves as a general for the Royalists and advisor to Prince Rhaegar, and the Battle of Thermopylae, where he takes the role of King Leonidas.
Short-Term Goals: Peter wants to earn the trust and respect of his crewmates, and superiors. He's eager to prove himself.
Long-Term Goals: He wants to rise through the ranks, eventually making it to Captain, and all the way, decades hence, to CINC.
Personality: Peter is a very private person who only rarely and sparingly share details about his personal life. He loves talking philosophy, politics, arts, literature, and the like, but when the topic changes to his private life, he answers only with bare facts: ”Yes, I have siblings, a sister.”. ”My parents are married”, etc. If pressed, he'll go slightly deeper with replies such as ”My sister is younger than me, I'm the oldest”, or ”My father served as well”, but one will have to get pretty close to Peter for him to open up, and that will take time. He is not unwilling to socialize, however, and has been known to start more than one round of ”Come cheer up, my lads” in the Academy bar. And in the rare occurrence that he finds a kindred spirit, Peter will be eager to get to know them.
Sense of Humor: Dry, sarcastic, quite ”British” in that sense. And he likes puns more than he's willing to admit.
Phobias: Most insects.
Likes: Loyalty, honesty, has a fascination with military history, especially Earth, but also alien. Italian opera, and 20th - early 21st century Earth sci-fi and fantasy stories.
Dislikes: Fish, German opera, mystery novels. The skulking around in the darkness looking for hidden clues is something that he finds distasteful. That said, he HAS engaged in such mysteries, as he realizes they can be good training for the more mundane security-related issues. But he does not like them.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Condescension, people with superiority complexes
Bad Habits or Vices: Peter has a somewhat short fuse when it comes to people questioning his competence.
Achievements: Being the first, ever, in his family to not only attend but graduate Starfleet Academy in the top 95th percentile.
Disappointments: Not graduating at the very top of his class.
Illnesses: Nothing apart from the ”normal” childhood illnesses.
Strengths: As a child of an enlisted man, Peter has an eye for the ”people on the bottom”, and will stand up for them when he feels it's necessary, even if that was to make him unpopular with his fellow officers. He also has a keen tactical mind, which he tries to keep as sharp as possible.
Weaknesses: That which is his strength, his connection to the ”people on the floor” also has the potential to be his weakness. He is not aware enough of the fact that some enlisted will dislike officers almost whatever they do, and thus view his attempt at camaraderie with suspicion. That, and his fellow officers might frown upon his ”exaggerated fraternization with the lower ranks”. Not to mention the age-old fact that one should not get too attached to those one commands, for various reasons.
Fears: Noblesse oblige. Peter is painfully aware of his groundbreaking, and that leads him to continually push himself ever harder, so as to not disappoint his family, his superiors, his peers, and, at the core of the issue: Himself. And he fears failing all of those – himself especially, though he'll never admit to that. He also has a slight fear of transporters, for reasons that shall become apparent soon.
Prejudices: Stemming from his phobia for insects, Peter has a hard time with insectoid species, even the sentient ones. He knows this to be a weakness, and strives to get better at ignoring it, but there is still a basic instinct in his ”reptilian brain” which warns him: ”That thing there is dangerous, man...why aren't you doing anything?!?!”
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: It varies. From casual t-shirt and shorts if he's planned a night to himself, to formal suit and tie if he has plans for which he wants to be well-dressed.
Distinguishing Features: None out of the ordinary
Friends: Jamila al-Jilani, his first girlfriend when both their parents served on the USS Europa together. When their ways parted, as inevitably happens when Starfleet personnel transfers, they kept in touch, and have kept in touch to the present day, even though she went to law school instead of pursuing a Starfleet career. She is one of the only people outside Peter's family who seems to be able to get beneath his facade of formality and appearances, and get to the person underneath.
Referrer: Former player

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: When his previous best friend, Simon Randolph, was killed in a freak transporter accident as he and his parents beamed to Earth once when the ship they were both on, was on shore leave. A one in a trillion accident that was not supposed to be possible caused Simon to materialize in two different locations: His torso at the intended destination, and the rest of him a thousand kilometers from there.

Though Peter has used the transporter literally hundreds of times since then, he always has a moment just before entering the pad where he takes a deep breath, thinks ”Please don't let what happened to Simon happen now...”, almost as a little ritual to help him dispel any fears of that.
Best Time: When he and Jamila were together – the last few years of their life onboard the USS Europa. He thinks of those years as years of innocence and happiness.
Most Crucial Experience: His Academy graduation
Role Model: Peter has primarily two: His father, who he looks up to as a role model for always striving to do his best, and to stand by your friends and family whatever else happens, and the former Captain of the USS Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard, as a professional role model. He sees in Picard the kind of Captain he wants to be someday.
