Personal History

Matthew Pauling was born on Earth in North America near Chicago, Illinois. Matt’s mother was a faculty member in history at the University of Chicago, and his father was a design consultant engineer in charge of various shipbuilding projects. Many of these projects took Matt’s father away for vast stretches of time, though, frequently Matt was able to go with his father on these journeys. When Matt wasn’t able to go with his father, he learned about what his mother did.

When Matt turned 16, it was time for him to begin to decide what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. It was a difficult decision. Part of Matt, a large part, wanted to go to university to become a scholar like his mother. The other half—the more adventurous half, wanted to enlist in Star Fleet. When he was 18, Matt had made up his mind. He was going to join Star Fleet. After talking with his parents about the decision for a long time, Matt decided that he could both be a scholar and adventurous at the same time. With that, Matt applied and was subsequently admitted to the Star Fleet Academy starting what would be part of the best time of his life. Matt’s time at Star Fleet was very happy. He decided, with approval from his parents to major in Tactical Strategy and Operations. The degree, for him, provided a good insight and combination of thinking and doing. Matt also decided, to obtain a degree in history as well. For Matt’s history degree, he traveled to Berkeley from the Academy. Though obtaining his history degree took him another year and a half to complete, Matt never complained, he felt that it was a great investment. Matt also took enough Science classes at the Academy he was awarded a minor in Interdisciplinary Science. When Matt finished his training, he was assigned to Starbase Alpha while he was awaiting assignment. After two months of near inactivity, Matt was reassigned to the USS Austin, a small support craft as an auxiliary tactical officer. He served on the Austin, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Joseph Young for one year, after which time, given recommendations and a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, Matt was reassigned during a last minute decision to the USS Nova, under the command of Rear Admiral Derrick Grant
