PR-1 Assault Rifle
Description
The PR-1 Assault Rifle, by Andorian Arms Inc., was the culmination of 20 years of research and development into a multi-function assault rifle. Developed specifically to counter Borg shielding, the PR-1 has since evolved to become the standard assault rifle for the Star Fleet Marine Corps. Though the Borg threat has been neutralised and the Marine Corps dissolved, the PR-1 remains the rifle of choice for Security Special Weapons Teams and Special Forces Operators due to its versatility and ease of use.
A development of the Dominion War-era TR-116, the PR-1 fires Tritanium projectiles propelled by expanding gases from a chemical detonation. The rifle was designed for use in areas of high electromagnetic (EM) interference (whether artificial or natural) that would render phasers useless. The performance is relatively poor by the standard of modern energy weapons - the effective range is limited to around one kilometre, and the largest feasible magazine was only capable of carrying thirty or forty rounds. However, in the kinds of environments the rifle was designed to operate in most opponents would be completely unarmed, while species like the Klingons would be reliant on swords and knives. Against that kind of opposition the TR-116 was more than adequate.
A purely kinetic weapon, the PR-1 represents a "brute force" approach that Star Fleet does not usually train its officers to engage in. Operation of the weapon is not taught at Star Fleet Academy, and the weapon is only assigned to Star Fleet Security Special Weapons teams or members of Special Operations Command. Though the PR-1 can be equipped with nonlethal ammunition like "Shock Rounds" for training scenarios or situations deemed too risky for live ammunition, the PR-1 is only usually issued in situations where lethal force is expected to be required.
