Personal History

Many believe that extreme poverty does not exist. For Onyx and his family, poverty is when the cost of getting new equipment or parts for repairs or paying someone for the part to be repaired would put them out scavenging for food for months living on a frontier colony to avoid the wars. Born in the bottom of the bottom of the heap, Onyx was the youngest of 5, with a complication that left his mother unable to produce more offspring. His parents tried their best to make sure Onyx did not have to suffer, yet a twist of fate would leave his own father out of work, barely scraping by to feed his family. Sanitation systems started to fail, hydration pumps becoming brittle, and replicators were no longer able to feed two Mirak adults without letting it cool for hours. Because of those harsh conditions, Onyx grew up tough, grew up mean, most importantly he grew up with a natural curiosity for how things work.

Throughout his late childhood/early teens, Onyx started to find scrap parts and turn them into parts his family could use. By any means, legal or not legal, Onyx did what he had to do to make sure his family survived. Such a demonstration of Engineering prowess did not go unnoticed. During his coming of age hunt, he stripped the animal he hunted of everything it had in order to feed his family, as well as finding raw materials and building new additions to his home. Before the actual kill, Onyx was able to take his broken spear and turn it into a bow and arrow. When the elders visited his home, they saw that Onyx was busy making sure everything was still working. When they tried to talk to him, Onyx told them to leave since he had work to do and he did not want any part in the Mirak military. The talk of Onyx and his engineering skills soon found their way to Star Fleet Commander Oscar Finn, a visiting engineer who was there for a joint conference for the Federation and the Mirak to discuss new surveying technology. It was Commander Finn who made first contact with Onyx about the possibly going to Star Fleet Academy when he turned 18. Onyx listened to Commander Finn as Finn stated he wanted to see for himself the boy who the Elders were talking about. At first, it was simply a tour of all Onyx did so far, and when Finn asked Onyx questions, Onyx was able to answer them quickly like an engineer. Commander Finn was so impressed that he stated he wanted to meet Onyx's parents to talk about sponsoring Onyx to Star Fleet Academy. Onyx literally threw the officer out.

That officer however did not relent as Commander Finn would give Onyx a PADD of Star Fleet’s Biography of the great engineers of old as a birthday present. The stories of Scott, LeForge, O’Brian, Tucker, as well as other Engineers the Corps of Engineers have commended had their own chapters. He read about what they did, their greatest triumphs, as well as their will to solve any impossible problem. For a moment Onyx was motivated by their accomplishments. Since it was a gift to try and motivate Onyx to at least apply, Onyx was free to tear the PADD apart and use the parts to upgrade their entertainment system at home.

After another year of relentless attempts by Commander Finn, as well as a final encouragement/order from Krylix (his father,) Onyx reluctantly accepted the invitation to apply and take the entrance exam. Due to Onyx having to teach himself everything since he did not go to school, he told everyone he would fail. It was only a few hours after the last test was scored that Onyx learned of the applicants trying out for the Academy of the 10 in the group, he was the top scorer. It was then his family’s turn to throw Onyx out of the house (literally) and into the shuttle that would take Onyx to the Academy.

To say that Onyx was enthusiastic about being a Cadet in the Academy would be very similar to saying that any healthy, rational creature capable of an IQ of a glass of water would love the game of 52 card pickup. Onyx hated every moment of it. His black humor got him in trouble many times, especially his Forensics instructor. When presented with a dead body and being asked what Onyx thought, his reply was "Well, he looks dead to me." Other cadets would be stunned by Onyx's complete lack for tact and diplomacy, yet the same cadets would come to him if they really needed help. He would also avoid every social function so he could spend countless hours at night repairing parts his family sent him as well as his own homework. Over the years however, he began to soften and actually make friends, working more as a team player than the reluctant one. He was still himself, which often got him reprimanded for petty slurs such as "Imagine all of human accomplishments and they produce a piece of crap like this." Followed by, "This cadet was ordered to be honest, Commander." As the end of his time as a cadet was in sight however, he learned that the best course of action was to just be quiet and learn.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Having the heave-ho done to him by his family to send him to Star Fleet. He did not want to go, he did not care to go, he wanted to stay home. When asked who will make sure the family survives, his father's only reply was they would manage. Watching his home fade way to a dot in subspace was the only time he cried.
Best Time: When he was young and he figured out how to fix his family's home with junk parts and a very basic tool set. The feeling of accomplishment that they could be self sustaining and Onyx having a role to play to save his family was paramount to their survival. Even during the longest winters Onyx worked tirelessly keeping them warm.
Most Crucial Experience: When he was 5, he found an old and outdated tool kit that an upper class family threw away because “it didn't work.” Onyx took that kit, figured out how they worked, and was able to fix the table so they could eat on a level surface. That simple task soon led to him taking apart things (including his parents shower) and putting them back together again.
Role Model: The engineers, surveyors, pioneers, and explorers of old who had very little to work with yet made incredible accomplishments.
