Personal History
Jaein was born in the waning days of the Bajoran Occupation, though they didn’t know that at the time. He was born on Bajor but grew up in a refugee camp in the Partalis system. It was a rough life, though it was better than if they had remained on Bajor proper. He and his older brother Derres wanted to join the Resistance, but there was little opportunity since they were outside of the Bajoran system. As they entered their teen years, however, they were able to begin helping with a local cell which smuggled supplies to the cells on Bajor.
Their parents were livid when they found out, of course. They had fled their home to try and protect their children, and here were their two sons, getting right back in the way. Derres responded by running away, going on one of the smuggling runs and simply staying on Bajor. Jaein, however, was younger. He wanted to help, but he also felt responsible for their little sister, particularly when he saw how devastated she was by Derres’ leaving. So instead, he made a deal: he would stay in the camp with them, but he wanted to still help however he could. He instead turned to working on the ships, rebuilding them and fixing them as best he could, and so began a long career in engineering.
Two years later, the Occupation ended, and the Omdor family moved back to Bajor. He joined the militia, working first on helping to keep the few ships they had up and running before being moved to the newly christened Deep Space Nine. For a long while, he was ostracized by former Resistance fighters for not being one of them, which only compounded his own feelings of failure for the compromise he made with his parents, and the anger at his brother for running off when he did.
However, those feelings soon began to shift. The Dominion began to be a looming threat, and as he worked with his fellows they all found respect for each other. Pulling together, he worked his way up the ranks through the repair teams on DS9, until by the time the Romulans joined the war he was leading his own crews. Later in life, he would credit this time to his success, learning how not only Starfleet systems worked, but Klingon, Romulan, and - during the Dominion occupation of the station - Cardassian and Dominion starships, as well.
More importantly, at least to him, it was during this time that he met the love of his life. Mary Ellen Carpenter was a Federation botanist, sent to Bajor to help their recovery efforts from the Occupation. While she was passing through DS9 on her way to Rakantha province, he struck up a conversation with her at the Replimat, which had lasted for several hours and nearly caused her to miss her transport. They kept in touch, only losing track of each other during the Dominion occupation, but picking back up as the Federation came back. When the war came to an end, he proposed to her, and they were married at the shrine in his parent’s home town two months after the peace treaty was signed.
After the honeymoon, he was offered a chance to work on the Shakaar - a Miranda donated to the Militia by Starfleet after the war. It had been uprated, and survived the push to Cardassia Prime, but was due to go back to mothballs when she had been sent to Bajor instead. As a system defense boat, she was only on patrols near Bajor, which meant he could still spend time at home, but the challenge of being the chief engineer on a particular starship was a new one he was glad to try and meet.
He would serve as Shakaar’s chief engineer for ten years while Mary Ellen continued her work with the farmers of Rakantha province. During this time they had two children - a son, Polda, named after Jaein’s father, and a daughter Helen, named after Mary Ellen’s grandmother. They were happy and content with their life, but then the Synth attack on Mars changed their lives, as it did for most people within the Federation.
With the destruction of the Utopia Planitia shipyards, Starfleet was scrambling to up production at their other facilities, and were tapping anyone with experience in shipyard work to do so. At the unexpected recommendation of Miles O’Brien, he was extended the offer of a commission and a posting leading one of the lines at the 40 Eridani A Shipyards which, after discussion with his family, he accepted. He moved his family to Vulcan, while he took up residence at the shipyard proper. Working with his team, they were able to get the yards up to speed, and soon were producing two Inquiry-class ships per year on his line alone.
It was rough on his family for a while, as while they were used to him being gone for a week or two at a time, being uprooted from their home took a toll, and he wasn’t available to help them through it like he wanted to be. However, over a few years they were able to get past it and come together as a family once more.
By the mid 2390s, as the yard had begun moving on to other ship designs and kept producing, Starfleet tapped Jaein for another job. They had been working on the designs of a new engine for quite a while, something called Slipstream. They needed someone to build the prototype however, and his team was called in for the job. The line retooled for this new challenge, and within a year they had the ship built and ready for shakedown, which Jaein served as the chief engineer on. With the prototype successful, they retooled again and they became the second line for the Vestas, after the primary line at the rebuilt Utopia Planitia.
While he remained in charge of his line at 40 Eridani, he was now one of the engineers most consulted about the Slipstream as well, and was asked to help use the data from the Pathfinder Expedition - which had several both purpose-built Slipstream ships and refit ones - to make the Slipstream more fuel and energy efficient. He consulted with the Chief Engineers from that fleet, and had inspected most of them. However, even after the survey was done he remained in touch with Benjamin Elias, who was chief on the expedition's lone Vesta-class.
On a trip to DS9 to meet him and discuss several field modifications that he had made for potential incorporation into new ships straight off the line, he was saddened to find that he had been arrested. While navigating that difficulty combined with consulting with the junior engineers to get the same information as best he could, he was asked to come and lead the department during the Artemis next mission. He accepted, and became their interim chief.
