2348 BC – According to priest and mathematician William Whiston, this was the day that a comet (under supposed divine guidance) passed near Earth, causing the "Great Flood" that allegedly flooded the entire planet.
1964 – NASA launches the Mariner 4 probe toward Mars. This satellite became the first to transmit a close-up photograph of the planet, showing the rust-color of Mars' surface, as well as evidence that the planet had once held liquid water.
1967 – The first pulsating radio source (pulsar) is discovered using a special radio telescope.
