Neurotransmitter

A neurotransmitter is a neurogenic chemical found in the brain of certain lifeforms. These chemicals facilitate the transmission of neural energy between synapses. This chemical can cause severe stress in the brain, especially when affected by alien species' abilities or technologies.

  • When Captain Jean-Luc Picard was under the influence of an alien probe, of which transmitted memories, the neurotransmitter production was extremely high.
This was postulated to be due to the brain processing and "living out" the memories that were being broadcast into his mind.
This also caused the Captain to fall unconscious, in a state that if woken, the overproduction of neurotransmitters would harm him.

  • A Lumerian, using Deanna Troi as a holding cell for his negative emotions, caused her neurotransmitter levels to rise 300% above normal.
They rose to well over 400% before the medical team on the Enterprise was able to do anything to help.

  • In 2375, Seven of Nine began experiencing a temporary condition almost identical to multiple personality disorder.
This was caused by a recently-encountered piece of Borg technology, and The Doctor adjusted her Borg-ingrained neurotransmitter regulator in order to lessen the effects.
