Personal History
Born in the capital city of Romulus, Nei'rrh and her sister, D'ina. had been expected to follow their parent's footsteps in politics. Nei'rrh had unsatisfactory grades in her education, preferring to limit her studies to topics she had interest in, namely art, music, and martial arts and cultural studies. She did poorly in science classes, and her work in history was inconsistent. Although she had a highly disciplined mind, obedience was an issue in her early years.
Her sister, D'ina, was being groomed by her parents to take a place in the Senate beside them. She was bright, funny, and like her parents, had strong Unionist leanings, something that was kept quiet due to their precarious political position. Nei'rrh looked up to her sister, who was to her mind the ideal of Romulan women, but at the same time felt resentful of all the attention being placed on her. She believed she would never hold the same love and esteem her sister had from her parents... that she had been an afterthought (or worse, an accident) in the family, and this caused intense jealousy.
D'ina was seldom called by her name, her parent's preferring to call her saeihr (a star). They would always joke that D'ina was the new star on the horizon of Romulan politics. While Nei'rrh's parents did nothing overt, Nei'rrh grew up believing that her sister was the more loved... something she came to doubt once she had grown up, and it was far too late.
When she reached her teens, she briefly studied Vulcan philosophy and the mental disciplines, concepts which her sister brought into the household. While Nei'rrh admired her sister and also had a strong interest in Vulcan philosophy, she had a even stronger sense of self interest. After an argument over Nei'rrh's place in the family, she reported D'ina to the authorities. Nei'rrh's mother, father, and sister resisted arrest and were killed in an attempt to fight their way free of the authorities.
Nei'rrh was taken and trained by the Tal'Shiar and used in several homeland intelligence operations in the city, where her youth gained her access and kept her above suspicion. While not formally a member of the Tal'Shiar, she knew to whom her loyalties lie. Living alone at the tender age of 14, she passed as one of the many orphan outcasts in the underbelly of the city, taking employment where she could, and often gaining access to clubs and families whose activities were seen by the Tal'Shiar as suspicious. Her own home, provided by the Tal'Shiar, was seldom visited: A tiny apartment in a marginal neighborhood, which had been furnished with all manor of luxury. She preferred the street and her work, always seeking to wash her family's blood from her hands by earning honors in the family name.
Although used by Tal'Shiar, she was never formally part of that organization, and that left her with a feeling of lack. Looking back at her family life she realized that it had been the one place where she truly belonged.
As she aged, she retained much of her youthful look, allowing her to continue spying on other citizens in the city, however she was spending more and more time with her books and her hrini in the solitude of her apartment. Fearing that she would loose her edge, the Tal'Shiar decided that her usefulness had come to an end. Her apartment and belongings were sold off by her previous benefactors, and Nei'rrh found herself homeless and without any useful skills.
Nei'rrh had mixed feelings about space, having never ventured from the borders of her home city, but had little choice in the matter, now having no where else to go. She joined the Imperial Academy with the vague idea of becoming an engineer, which she felt was a solid career. Once at the academy her instructors noticed both that she was not performing up to standards in her science and engineering courses, but had managed to turn in a number of her fellow students for minor infractions, as well as obtain some test results previous to testing. After she was punished for her theft of the test results, she was moved to security where she specialized in intelligence. She showed a keen sense for understanding other cultures and understanding subtle cultural nuances, and had a tendency to understand how to turn things to her best advantage rather than engage in any true diplomacy. In her new studies she excelled.
