Personal History

Nator 159 had a fairly typical Hermat upbringing - educated and fully grown by the age of 3, and charging around with hir small gang of four friends when they weren't being pinned down by their tutors long enough to take a lesson. Running and hunting through the rolling forests of hir home was a singular joy, until one of the pack, Hemar 32, plunged down a hidden gorge and broke both hir legs, one of which was a compound fracture. It took half an hour of climbing just to reach hir, and then there was the problem of getting hir back out and to aid. It took Nator, Lora, Jori and Ekoren another hour to get Hemar out of the gulley and on to flat land, and then they had to carry hir across fifteen kilometres of wooded ground to the nearest municipal transport station to take hir to a hospital.

They had carried hir in shifts, but the blood loss outpaced the regenerative metabolism of the Hermat, and the medics at the hospital had been unable to save hir. Because of their relay, the only-recently-adult gang were covered in their friend's blood, and dirt, and all manner of other evidence of their trek through the forests. A Star Fleet nurse on an exchange with the Directorate's medical arm took them aside to get cleaned up, and to tell their story while the hospital got in touch with Hemar 31. The others held a certain disdain for the offworlder, and left as soon as their account was made, but Nator 159 was curious despite hirself.

S/he quizzed the Fleet nurse about what it was like to live on Hermat as an outsider, what it was like to live with only one set of genitalia... later came wider questions about the Federation and the galaxy as a whole. The nurse encouraged hir to go out and see it for hirself; as a legal adult of hir home planet s/he was entitled to apply for admission to the Academy for training and commission. S/he left the nurse in the hospital, and went home to grieve.

A year later, Nator 159 made just such an application, to the confusion of hir friends, and was accepted when s/he was 5. Before s/he left, there was a drunken night in the capital during which they got a matching tattoo - five dots in a pentagon; one for each of them and one to commemorate Hemar 32.

At the Academy, s/he made a brief foray into the Medical branch before s/he, and hir tutors, realised s/he had precisely zero aptitude for biology, xeno or otherwise. Physical equipment, though, and higher mathematics, s/he could eat alive. She switched to Engineering, and scored in the ninetieth percentile for the rest of hir time at the Academy.

Upon graduation, s/he was assigned to the Utopia Planitia fleet yards and was a small part of the team that finalised the theoretical work on the transwarp gates and began their construction. By the time the gates were done, and used to such final effect in the Krynar war, s/he was a full Lieutenant and well-used to managing a team of R&D engineers. The section turned their efforts towards increasing efficiency; the transit time seemed immutable (but was insignificant in the face of extreme distances possible), but the power draw was prodigious.

S/he completed a Command Course as a bureaucratic box-checking exercise and a stepping stone to hir next promotion, but shortly afterwards received notice that the USS Dauntless, 2nd Fleet independent-ops, required a new Chief Engineer. S/he had enjoyed hir work on the transwarp project, but had always wanted to see the galaxy s/he'd joined the Fleet for in the first place. S/he accepted the transfer.

Hish first mission aboard ship was fairly routine, at first. The Dauntless travelled to an unusual star system at the edge of Federation territory via transwarp gate - despite hish work designing them, s/he'd never actually travelled through one. The experience was oddly disappointing, after all the work that had gone into them. Upon arrival, they detected a ship in distress.

At first scan, it appeared to be a Constitution-class cruiser with the designation 'Enterprise', but deeper iterations revealed it to be a lower-technology copy of the original venerable design. It carried some 300 badly irradiated lifesigns, and so an away team was prepared. A nearby singularity caused some time dilation problems, however, and the team materialised about 12 hours subjective after they'd been sent. They were met with suspicion and hostility by the ship's crew, who held the away team at gunpoint. One of the team suffered a flashback and began self-harming, resulting in her being shot near-fatally by the other crew.

The Dauntless' first officer ordered the team to continue and repair the ship if possible, and Nator vociferously declined in full view of both the 'enemy' and the junior officers present. This started a toxic near-feud between hir and Commander Gregg that affected their ability to work together even after they escaped the knock-off Enterprise and returned home. It turned out that some Ferengi possibly working with a faction from the Temporal Cold War had tampered with the time line in order to sideline the Federation.

A heavyweight vessel seemed to be the architect of the situation, and threatened to annihilate the Dauntless before s/he managed to fool the computer into unlocking the ship's graser. The method s/he used dredged up some traumatic memories for certain members of the crew, but they were able to obliterate the enemy ship with relatively little damage in return. The thought of being party to so many deaths without much of a chance at parlay rankled hir.

At length, the ship returned to Bravo, and s/he sought out one of the officers hish trick had upset. S/he caught up with Lt Zephyr Praise in one of the station's botany labs, but fell victim to an example of Tholian flora that drove hir certifiably insane. S/he killed a Vulcan officer in hish frenzy, and began hunting the remainder of the science team present until s/he succumbed to exhaustion and mental influence from Praise herself.

S/he was exonerated from murder by way of reduced capacity and responsibility, but the knowledge of the unwarranted slaughter will stay with hir for a long time; let alone the effect it had on Ms Praise.

The chewing-out s/he received at the hands of hish captain for hish insubordination on the 'Enterprise' was easy to deal with, in comparison.

Following another sortie, s/he transferred off the Pegasus and returned to station duty, taking up a division head position for the Bravo sector of the transwarp network. It was a more comfortable job role for hir after a fairly disastrous run of missions and personnel conflicts aboard ships, and s/he was happy to take what might be seen by some as a step back in hish career for the sake of better mental health.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Transwarp theory, Quantum chromodynamics
Academy Minor(s): Subspace array design, Tachyonic retrocausality
Hobbies and Pastimes: Rock climbing, running
Short-Term Goals: Publish a paper on the hitherto unrecognised problems of causality with faster-than-light travel
Long-Term Goals: Find a way of miniaturising transwarp technology sufficiently that it may be fitted to space-faring vessels
Personality: Honest, and clear. While s/he doesn't go out of hir way to truly get to know non-Hermats as a general rule, s/he still makes sure to be polite to all who provide the same courtesy. S/he is focused on hir work at just about all times, having little time for distractions while on-duty
Sense of Humor: Pretty dirty, for a stout asexual
Phobias: None
Likes: Risan wines, tough problems, running barefoot through grass
Dislikes: Insects, interruptions, poor work ethics
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Single-gendered species forgetting/failing to learn the appropriate pronouns for hir own race
Bad Habits or Vices: S/he will tap hir extended claws on the nearest hard surface while thinking
Achievements: One of the relative few Hermats to adjust to life off their homeworld and attain some small authority in the Federation
Disappointments: Failing to adequately help hir friend out of the gorge
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Rapid mental calculation, physical dexterity
Weaknesses: Empathy, 'stepping into someone else's shoes'
Fears: Abandonment
Prejudices: S/he bears a mild prejudice towards single-gendered species. Nothing extreme, more a very minor sort of pity that they had the misfortune to be born with only one set of reproductive gear
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Vest tops and loose pants; exercise gear
Distinguishing Features: A small tattoo, on the inside of hir forearm, of five black dots arranged in a pentagon
Pets: None
Friends: Lora 59, Jori 187, Ekoren 95; all back home on Hermat. S/he has never socialised deeply-enough while off hir home planet to form lasting friendships

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Losing hir friend Hemar 32 despite hir best efforts at carrying hir to hospital
Best Time: The leaving party on Hermat
Most Crucial Experience: Discovering the universe beyond the skies of hir homeworld
Role Model: Commodore Miles Daugereau, the deputy director of the Corps of Engineers' R&D division, whose battleaxe-attitude kept the teams rolling despite setbacks
