Personal History

Li Harah and Li Jamis had both been officers in the Bajoran Militia, serving until Bajor joined the Federation, when they transferred to Star Fleet. Throughout the Federation/Romulan War, they served aboard the Starship Potemkin, and were impressed by their fellow crew, especially they’re captain, Nadia Ambrose. She was a strong woman, and when she died on their last mission of the war, the entire crew was devastated. Harah and Jamis retired from Star Fleet after the war, settling down at Prophet’s Landing as farmers, taking the family trade back.

When they had their first daughter, they saw a strength in the newborn’s eyes, a strength that reminded them of what they had lost in their friend, and so they named her Li Nadia, in her honor.

Nadia grew up as a normal child – happy, carefree. Her parents gave her everything she needed, remembering their friend. However, they did teach her about honor and loyalty, about strength in all its forms. Physical wasn’t difficult to teach – they did, after all, live on a farm – but she also was shown strength of character, strength of will. In all, she was a typical farmer’s daughter – strong, yet innocent.

It couldn’t last.

When the Dominion invaded at the start of the First General War, Prophet’s Landing was one of the first planets to fall. They were harsher here than in some places, using the colony as a food producer, and the colonists as expendable labor. Harah and Jamis kept thinking back to the original Occupation, realizing it could be worse, but laboring under it only to its conclusion, knowing that the Federation would come for them. And eventually they did, despite the years it took.

As the Dominion was forced out of system, though, they executed a scorched earth campaign on the colony. They destroyed everything in their path, in order to deny it to the enemy. They swore that the planet would never produce its own food again. They destroyed equipment, poisoned fields, burned grain, destroyed villages. Decimated populations.

By the time the Dominion was driven out, a bare handful of the colonists were alive. Some had died during the occupation itself. Most, however, were executed on that last day. Nadia had only survived by being hidden in a cave as the battle began. However, her parents had gone back out looking for their other children, and had never returned.

Nadia’s heart hardened that day. She swore revenge on those who had done this, swore that she wouldn’t rest until she had found justice for her family’s death. She finished her teenage years with this hatred burning in her, until she finally found what she was looking for.

The Maquis.

A Bajoran man approached her one day as she was in the marketplace of Kran-Tobal. He seemed to know how she felt, how she burned with anger. He offered her release, offered her a chance to find that revenge her soul longed for. He offered her a place at his side, and she took it. The man simply called himself Lucifer.

For the next six years, as the Federation and the other powers fought their wars and had their issues, Lucifer’s plan came to fruition. He called it “Morning Star,” and planned to unleash their collective fury directly on the Cardassian homeworld. To that end, they recruited many scientists, all of whom helped him to build weapons and delivery systems for his vision.

However, as scientist recruitment dropped, Lucifer started getting desperate. He burned with such hatred that his plan was all he could see. He started kidnapping scientists who wouldn’t work with him willingly, forcing them to work. Then he stopped asking them to join, and simply took what he wanted. Nadia could see what was happening, and started examining her own motivations.

Finally, she realized how far she had fallen. She knew that her family wouldn’t want her to be pursuing this. That despite their anger, even hate, for the Cardassians that did this, they could never condone acts like this. Killing innocent people – Bajoran, Cardassian, Human – it was all murder. And Lucifer’s plan called for genocide on an untold scale.

Kidnapping the Colsos was the last straw for her. She made up her mind to leave, and tried to talk Lucifer out of his plan. But he wouldn’t see reason. He was as blind by his hate as his namesake, as she herself had been years previous. He beat her, and had her locked in a cell, alone.

Three months she stayed there, trying to find a way out, and constantly failing to do so, until the day the Colsos escaped. She threw her lot in with them, then, and decided to do whatever it took to make sure that no more innocents were hurt. She was injured during the escape, and when she finally awoke weeks later to find the Colsos still there, still caring for her, she knew joy and peace for the first time in many years.

After her lengthy recovery from a polaron weapon and multiple organ failure sustained in the escape, she decided that perhaps there was more to Star Fleet than she cared to admit. Her parents had believed in it, her namesake had died for it, and the Colsos lived it. Perhaps it had a place for her, too.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Best Time: Living on the colony, working the farm before the Dominion came
Most Crucial Experience: Her reexamination of her life, when she let go of her hate and realized what it was that she needed to do
Role Model: Her mother; Li Harah was a forceful woman. She knew how to get her way. However, she also had a core of gentleness about her; she could soothe the angriest beast back to docility. She would fight for anyone, defend them to the death, if they were being wronged.
