Avenger

Avenger was escorted to the Wadi homeworld by Dominion forces. Upon arrival they found a very busy world with hundreds of ships in orbit. A delegation beamed down. During the negotiation the situation broke down, and it was discovered both on-planet and in orbit that the Dominion in this sector had been usurped by Krynar forces. They oddly referred to them as “Voorik” which might be some new clue to the origin of the Krynar or it might be just another word for them.

There were some malfunctions with replicators and an odd disease appeared, but neither seemed to directly jeopardize the mission.

After a brief encounter the Avenger escaped with her crew and ship intact, although they had failed to make a deal with the Dominion.

James Madison

James Madison made her way to the KW facility, on the way having replicator malfunctions which caused acid showers; and several crew contracting an odd virus that seemed to mimic zombies.

The facility, it was found, had been abandoned and taken over by Ferengi scavengers. After an unpleasant encounter with them, the James Madison escaped to the wormhole where they met up with the Avenger and headed home.

Together

After a stop at Earth to pick up crew and supplies, the USS Avenger set course for the Gamma Quadrant wormhole near the former location of Bajor. The USS James Madison was attached as an auxiliary craft in place of a Captain’s Yacht as was the new configuration.

After passing through the wormhole, both ships went off on their assigned tasks, the Avenger to negotiate a treaty for Ketracel White and aid, and the James Madison to obtain the Ketracel White if the Avenger’s diplomatic mission failed.

After a shore leave where most of my time was spent dealing with transitioning my old crew and working to fill the rest of the positions aboard ship, we finally left Star Base Delta. We made the three week journey to Earth with no major ship incidents, although I did have to give my daughter Katie a lesson in why we replicate pre-cut apples, and picked up our First Officer and some other personnel and materiel.

The USS James Madison has been assigned to us, replacing my yacht with a vehicle to be used for covert operations. It makes sense, as I never used my yacht myself, and only ever launched it when we needed it for a mission.

My senior crew are filled out, with at least a few from the James Madison, whom we met on our arrival into this universe; and a few new faces, as well as an old face belonging to a new man... Lieutenant Commander Scott, an engineer, will be a sore reminder of my last First Officer.

I just had my first private meeting with my First Officer and it went... well enough. We started out at odds with aspects of our mission, but I believe we came to a situation which will work. It'll take time, as it always does, for us to get our rhythm together. I am still concerned at her relationship with Admiral Grayson. I know he didn't want her here, and I'm not sure she wants to be here. But my bigger concern is that he strikes me as a by-the-book officer, and I am not. If she were to go back and tell him some of my methods...

I am about to go brief the crew on our mission. We'll see what the senior crew are made of in this meeting, and maybe make some changes based on the results.

Begin log.

After three weeks of travel we have arrived at the Bajoran wormhole. We are making preparations for our ships to go through the wormhole to start our mission proper.

I can't help but feel slightly overwhelmed at the level of destruction. I think because I came from a universe where Bajor was not only still there but thriving following the fall of Cardassia it seems more dramatic to me—and to the 200 or so that came with me—than too the 600+ who have had a year to deal with this. I still suspect the Bajoran members of the crew are probably affected deeply, especially Azernal—I could see the look on his face when he saw where we were going—and Mihar, the counselor who now has no homeworld. At least Azernal, being a mixed-breed knows his OTHER homeworld is still intact.

But it makes me wonder, as I think back to the destruction in our own universe... how much longer will my crew have here before we face the same level of conquest and destruction we did back home. Is there anything we can do to stop it?

[Grant clears his voice, sounds like he coughs. The recording is paused for one full minute, before he continues.]

Our mission is to go through the wormhole, meet up with some Vorta, and negotiate for white and possibly an alliance. Because I know how poor my skills in diplomacy are, I've sent the James Madison to hopefully acquire the White if we don't succeed.

We'll have to see how it goes, but I am not optimistic.

We arrived in the Bajoran system to find a level of destruction the likes of which I wish I could say I'd never seen before. Too many systems in our own reality had been turned into such wreckage, and I'd seen more of them than I care to count. But this one seemed more... real... for some reason. It was perhaps because Commander Azernal, sitting next to me, is half Bajoran.

Following a short memorial we ran scans and found a number of scavengers. Most were scared off, and we were able to continue our mission.

Commander Crawford has taken the James Madison and followed us through the wormhole. Following that transition we are going to separate, so they can go off and prepare to acquire some Ketracel White for us; while we go try to make contact with whatever is left of the Dominion.

Captain's Log, Star Date 21211.13. Captain Derrick Grant recording.

Begin log.

Well we encountered the Dominion. 5 patrol ships intercepted us while we were en route to Wadi. So far no signs that they have any Jem Hadar, backing up what the reports from the Gettysburg mission here a few months ago indicated. The lead ship is, of course, led by a Kharrea Vorta, so I have to deal with that ***** here, too. I'll manage.

They started off by indicating that they knew a lot more about us than they should have, which concerns me. I hear my counterpart in this universe was quite the spy, and he probably would have had the ship bugged so he'd know of any leaks. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near his equal in that way—or maybe fortunately, for it looks like it turned him into an aberration of what I am—so I am stuck hoping that we can find out where the leak came from. Of course my first instinct is the two Vorta. But I can't be sure... there are other possibilities and I can't blind myself to the one.

In any event they surrounded us. We are outgunned, and they can certainly outmaneuver us. Still, I have to decide if I'm to let them 'escort' us as they desire. Is this a time to show strength, and tell them we intend to continue our course and mission, or is it a time to be more cooperative and go with them, albeit cautiously?

Our ablative armor is active, but our shields are down. They have weapons charged but not targeted, and their shields are up. If they open fire, we probably don't stand a chance. By the time we know they've targeted we'll be dust—it would take too long to raise shields and respond. On the other hand I could raise shields, to add protection... but that might be interpreted by them as resisting their 'request'.

Why in hell did Star Fleet decide that *I* would make a good diplomat and send me? Other than my having a couple of Vorta—neither of which I really trust—there is nothing about Avenger that made it a better ship for this mission than any other. Except, of course, the Jem Hadar and the fact that by the time another ship made this trip, and returned, there'd be NO White left for them and we'd likely have had to put them down.

Maybe I should release Crawford to take the facility, and risk the consequences... but then if they meet any real resistance they haven't the ability to defend themselves, and all is lost.

I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place here... and I don't like feeling trapped.

Meanwhile I just read a few fleet reports that we received just before entering the wormhole. It appears that there is a medical alert out on some minor virus that has been detected on a handful of ships. I hope it doesn't affect the crew on this mission. I need everyone at 110%.

I have to remember... we're here to get a job done. And we're going to get it done. We'll try diplomacy first. If that doesn't work, then we'll use our other resources to get the job done. If we cannot secure any White, then I have to either turn the Jem Hadar over to the Dominion or exterminate them. Probably the Vorta as well. Part of me wonders if that would just be the easiest thing to do. Part of me wants to do it. But I have my orders... and they are to do whatever is possible to secure the White.

Life was easier back home, where orders were more broad because of the desperation... where I'd have been told to go get the White, not to negotiate for it. Where the Dominion were our 'allies' and would have provided it. Where the enemy was clear... the Krynar and Romulans and their associated species'.

It seems the ship is wracked with malfunctions in the replicator systems. From the reports it's replicating some sort of dangerous chemicals. Why did I allow them to 'refit' my ship? Why? They could have just repaired it and left everything the way it was, but no... the infernal engineers of THIS Star Fleet had to alter my systems to be in compliance with their so-called standards.

Standards... acidic water replicators...

We have reached the Wadi homeworld, and have been placed in a parking orbit. Several Dominion warships are nearby and undoubtedly keeping a close eye on us.

We were 'requested' to beam down to the surface for a conference with Dominion leaders. We were 'allowed' three representatives of the Star Fleet crew, plus our onboard Vorta and two Jem Hadar. Only the Jem Hadar may be armed. We were given five minutes to prepare for this beam-down, which proved inadequate. It took me seven minutes just to get to the transporter room, stopping off to check on the girls on my way to the transporter room.

They did extend an olive branch and offer for our crew to take shore leave, but i'm not sure if that's for the best or not.

I left the bridge under the command of Lieutenant Command Tucker. She has some big challenges while we're gone.

The replicator situation is still not resolved, and Aldren and Dramar are working on it to determine if it's sabotage or malfunction, and then take whatever action is necessary. Judith should be able to manage oversight of this project.

In addition she informed me as I was leaving the bridge that we've lost contact with the probe, meaning the James Madison should not be enacting the contingency plan. That means that they will launch a covert assault on the Ketracel White facility and liberate not only a supply of the K-W but also the machinery used to refine and produce it.

Now we're going to beam down... I can only hope that things to better than I expect that they will.

We are on the surface of Wadi, and have started the meeting with the Dominion. Attending with me are Commander Azernal Rin, Lieutenant Ironfist, Earun, and a pair of Jem Hadar. Opposing.. if that's the right word.. are a clone of our Kharrea, complete with the wonderfully warm personality, and a Founder. They brought for Jem Hadar to the party, and yet claim there are only 100 left in the entire Dominion. I don't trust them.

So far the meeting has produced little progress. They want to invade the Alpha Quadrant. I'm not keen on it. Impasse.

We'll see where it goes from here. I can only hope that the James Madison is doing better than we are.

Captain's Log Star Date 21303.12.

The negotiations went about as well as I expected, which is to say that they were an utter cluster ****. But, we learned why toward the end.

The Dominion on this planet—perhaps in this entire sector—are 'enlightened' Krynar subjects!

In the middle of our meeting, the Avenger was apparently attacked in orbit, and our meeting was interrupted as a Krynar (soldier?) burst into the room. The Dominion representatives, including the Founder!, bowed to it, and it tried to take us over as well. I cannot begin to describe the mental torment I was put through... I'll probably need to see Counselor Mihar to work some of this out... more correctly I'll probably be required to.

A firefight ensued, and in it we lost both our Jem Hadar and Earun. The last thing I remember is passing out on the floor before awakening aboard the Avenger.

Personal Log Stardate 21209.15 Third Ikat'Ukan Recording

The sooner we contact the founders, the better all of this mess will get. It was never my place to consider the viability of assignment and co-mingling with a Federation crew. But now, with all that has occurred, in both universes, I cannot set aside my judgments any longer. Kharrea says that she will insist with Captain Grant that we make contact with the Dominion of this universe. If there is much more delay, some serious issues will arise. We are not weak, not like some of these Star Fleet crew, but the ration of the White has taken its toll. From what I can gather, Captain Grant has restricted us to roughly thirty percent of what would be the standard allowance.

Kharrea has given no indications that we have not performed our duties, so such a punitive action is unjustified, and it must be that Human's doing. He fears us, a he should. Keeping us weak, he must think, keeps him strong. One word from the Vorta and we could kill them all...but not any longer. Concentration has become exceedingly difficult. Several of my squad have reported incidents where they very nearly struck out on one of our 'allies.' Shrouding is absolutely out of the question. Matters will only become worse as time goes on. We must get back to the Dominion, to The Founders.

SD 21209.16 – Lt Adam Shelmer

Mission Log... Stardate 21209.15 Lieutenant Adam Shelmer recording,

After leaving the Bridge, I and Meyer enjoyed some down time, munching and sleeping.

The route to Star Base Delta was uneventful, leaving time for me to drop by 10Forward on the Avenger and play a little Texas Hold'em with some of the Avenger and Madison crew.

Once we reached SBD, I ran into the CMOs of the Avenger and the Madison. We did what sailors on leave typically do... well at least West and I did... we talked about women and drank.

Later the Madison crew was called to a less than celebratory briefing were I and several of my fellow crew mates were awarded metals. We were then told that the crews of the Madison and Avenger would merge.

At which point, the crews did merge for a 'get to know you' session prior to having our leave cut short.

I made it to the new and improved Avenger bridge and took my station. Ready for action.

SD 21209.25 – LCdr Samantha Dramar

Chief Engineer’s Log Stardate 021209.25 Lieutenant Commander Samantha Dramar Recording

To say that it has been an eventful two weeks is quite the understatement. Upon arriving at Delta, we were placed on administrative leave until they could figure out what to do with ourselves. Hell, at the time, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with myself. I’d just learned that my “brother” was alive in this universe. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to meet him yet or not. With all of the changes that had occurred, I didn’t know if meeting him right now was the best thing for me. Frankly, I’m a little glad that the choice was taken out of my hands.

After a day on the station, some pencil pushing bureaucrat in this universe’s Starfleet personnel office contacted me about updating my personnel records. He said that there was some discrepancy; apparently I hadn’t adequately documented my Certification Maintenance points for my professional engineer’s license, and as a result I would have to sit for the exam again. Are you ******* kidding me! I spend half a lifetime fighting one ******* war after another, holding my ship together with at times with nothing but duct tape and sheer force of will, and some bean counter in the personnel office who has never seen the front lines has the balls to tell me that I’m no longer a “professional engineer” because I hadn’t done the appropriate paperwork! That SOB was lucky I was half a quadrant away.

[sighs followed by a few seconds of silence]

So anyways, I get there after studying my *** off again for the damn test, take the test, and pass it. And to top it off, the man from personnel… Ensign Broan-a-what-ever didn’t even show his face. Takes me away from my ship and crew and take a damn test and doesn’t even bother to show up… *** hole.

As it turns out, retaking the PE wasn’t the only reason for my journey to SBA. It was the first of three reasons. The second reason, and probably the most important was the debriefing with the Engineering Corps. They were rather interested in my experience with the Krynar and wanted to pick my braining over it in person. That I didn’t mind. It had been a long time since I’d been on Earth. There… there are few things as beautiful as the sight of your planet from space. It had been a long time since I’d been back there, what not with all of the fighting against the Romulans and the Krynar.

This Earth was so similar to and yet so different than the one we left behind. I don’t know if I can put my finger on exactly what the differences are, subtle, but they are there. As I stood on the shore of bay at Starfleet Academy looking out over the water, I felt the bay breeze blowing through hair; the spray of the mist against my face. It was almost enough to make me not accept the new commission offered by Starfleet. Almost.

The third reason for my trip to Earth was to take the Command Readiness Training. It was a grueling exam, but I passed. As per the request of my instructor, I will not detail the content of the exam here.

I am currently sitting in my newly updated quarters. I must say, Delta’s engineers did a pretty good job on refitting the ship. I haven’t had a chance to check out must of the modifications there were made. I’m especially excited to see how the joining of the Avenger and the James Madison went. Commander Crawford has called for a staff meeting, in about 45 minutes. It should give me plenty of time to check out some of the modifications along the way.

SD 21209.28 – Cdr Tyra Crawford

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21209.27

I really don't know why I thought Starfleet would give me a break after I brought the Madison back. For some reason, I had assumed that they'd give me a nice desk job on Delta that I'd absolutely hate but that would at least give me the peace of mind of being near Thomas.

Nope. That is definitely not what happened. I was three days into my shore leave on Earth when I got summoned to Personnel at HQ. It should have been a major warning sign when I was told that the offer hadn't gone through the 4th Fleet Command because of my involvement with Thomas...

...Actually, calling it an 'offer' is really misleading. It was definitely not a fair choice. It was more along the lines of you will take the position of the Avenger's FO or you'll conveniently find yourself with a position on the frontlines somewhere. Apparently, I can thank Grant for that because he claims to have pushed hard to get that done.

Personally, I want to know what I've done so horribly wrong that God felt it was fitting to have my options read along the lines of lower level of Hell and just Hell.

I can get over my disdain for the FO position—that is by far a minor objection in this scenario. I'm just concerned that someone, most likely Grant, was in too much of a rush to get back into action that they failed to comprehend that two months was not enough time to acclimate this crew properly.

While their psychological health is a major concern and one that I'm sure will become crystal clear as this mission continues, I'm worried about far more intangible things. It doesn't matter how much reading up they did; they're lacking basic firsthand knowledge of things that rest of us take for granted and it's replaced by knowledge that probably means diddly squat here.

And even if I ignore their lack of knowledge about different aspects of our divergent histories, how many techniques are different between the two parts of the crew(I'd say halves but the original crew is more like a quarter)? Department heads are pretty much going to have to re-train part of their department... While I don't think this will be a problem in all areas, what about security, where different tactics could get people killed? Or engineering and medical, where even the tools are different? And what about in departments with original DHs? I'm not inclined to force the majority of a department to learn a technique that can't be applicable anywhere else, but I also don't trust Grant not to side with his original crew—it's instinct, isn't it?

I almost think a frontline position might have been less mental strain...

My first meeting with Grant didn't go great for either of us but unless he thought I would be inclined to bend to his will, that shouldn't have been a shock.

I really don't know what to think about him yet. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but he's making it hard. I already knew he had a very strong 'war' mindset coming into this but I didn't think he'd have such a difficult time comprehending that what worked where he was might not work here. The mentality to look for a fight, while I completely understand it, is not going to help matters here... and I don't feel like I should be stuck babysitting the playground bully. I'm honestly not even sure he has any respect for this Starfleet... probably too soft in his mind.

We have a senior staff meeting in thirty minutes. I hope that he loses the bravado bullshit when addressing them. It won't exactly go far in smoothing things over...

On the bright side, this makes time on the James Madison look a heck of a lot more appealing...

SD 21210.15 – Lt Adam Shelmer

Personal Log, Stardate 21210.15 Lieutenant Adam Shelmer recording:

With the announcement that the Madison and Avenger crews were to join forces, I took advantage of introducing myself to all the new female crew and some of the males as well.

In no time the Avenger was retrofitted and we were to report for duty. We had no more gotten our seats warm when the Avenger doctor announced that a strain of the chicken pox from the other universe was aboard, but luckily he came with a solution and I took my shot like a man.

During the mission briefing, I learned that the Madison would set out to locate a Ketracel White instillation, while the Avenger tried to make contact with the Dominion using the Vorta that were part of the Avenger crew.

I've asked to be part of the Madison crew. It will be comfortable to be back home aboard the JM, though don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the increased crew size and especially the softer crew members.

The two crews seem to be merging, with only a few minor hiccups. Nothing major for me to worry about. Which, to be honest is just as well as I’m having slight difficulty adjusting to this new role. I have a department now….with crew working under me and if I’m honest I don’t know if I’m enjoying it…

….Some of them look to me for guidance. What do I tell them? I’d rather be off shooting something than listening to welfare issues? Maybe I’m not cut out for this position? Maybe I’d be better following orders ( not that I did that very well ), than giving them?…..I think we shall see….

……things are different between Sierra and myself. I havent had the opportunity to speak with her, and I’m not sure how she feels….maybe thinking of her in that way was a mistake?….I’m not saying I wanna marry her, but our respective jobs, certainly at the moment are keeping us busy and I can’t see a point in the future when it will ease?

Grant seems ok. Different to my other CO’s, apart from Torkav, who lets be honest was just a royal pain! Always felt as if everything was a test with that Klingon….not that that was a problem, but we had avoided each other, or so it seemed…..Grant seems to want to run a tight ship, and there certainly isn’t anything wrong with that….time will tell.

I have just liased with Crawford regards who she is taking on the Madison for our next mission. Feng and Kashar will lead the security detail, Feng being the highest ranking of the two. I have also recommended young CM Sarah Dyer. She joined with the refit and has been showing promise. Young in age, but very capable, I have reviewed her Academy scores and things are looking good for her.

I shall remain on the Avenger…..and I don’t really like the idea. I’d be best suited on the Madison, but its not my choice. No point in moaning about it though…I took this damn job and have to try and make the best of it…

SD 21210.15 – Cdr Tyra Crawford

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21210.15

Last time I checked, we were two hours away from Bajor, or where Bajor was.

The last three weeks have gone substantially smoother than my first few hours on board the Avenger. I think I've gotten use to Grant, and his differences from the Grant I'm use to. Of course, it's probably helped that I've spent most of the last three weeks working through different details of the Madison's potential operation.

The Avenger is being sent into the Gamma Quadrant to attempt to form some sort of alliance with the Dominion, and on a micro level, acquire some more Ketracel White so that our Jem Hadar don't go into an uncontrollable rage.

I don't think anyone is incredibly confident that this is going to work. Even if Starfleet had sent a professional diplomatic team, I don't think the chances of success would be increased in any significant way. The Dominion have never come across as the type to want to cooperate, even if they did form some kind of alliance in Grant's universe.

I'd say that's a pessimism that is shared as the Madison will be launched shortly before the Avenger enters the wormhole. Our whole mission will revolve around obtaining a supply of KW if negotiations between the Avenger and the Dominion break down.

Because of the mission and it's potential to require significant force, the composition of the Madison's crew has changed some. We're taking significantly less support staff to make room for 8 marines, consisting of 4 Jem Hadar, Dawson and three of her other boys. Ensign Feng will be leading the security team of 4, which will augment the marines, and regardless of my level of involvement in the assault, I plan on him retaining leadership of the team.

On another note, I don't officially have an acting FO yet. However, the decision was just finalized with Grant's approval and as soon as I can have a word with the individual, it'll be official. I'm fairly confident that I've made the right decision, but time will tell.

I've worked closely with Sierra in devising a number of plans, depending on how things shape up. I really can't stand having as few known details as we do. We're basing most of our ideas off of the knowledge of a Vorta from a different universe with no guarantee that things are even remotely similar. It drives me insane, almost as insane as trying to force myself to stay in that damn center chair when an operation is occurring. I'm willing to bet that I'll fail miserably there and probably won't feel too bad about it either…

I need to do one more check of everything; I might not be able to control how things shape up but I can make sure that we're prepared for the worst. Although given the size of the Madison… well, let's not go there. If we do our jobs well, we'll be in and out without the Dominion ever knowing…

Chief Medical Officer's Log, Stardate 21210.15 Lieutenant Junior Grade West recording:

The USS Avenger has been placed back on active duty. Not that it was any surprise, the ship was served it's crew well and I believe it will continue to do so. She has been refitted with some new equipment and upgrades, but she still has the same soul.

One surprise was that I was kept on as the Chief Medical Officer. After the session I had with a Captain Ristone on the space station, I was sure I was be replaced but here I am.

We have incorporated the USS James Madison and her crew into ours, a move which was probably necessary due to our staffing problems. It should be interesting to see how it works out.

My first medical procedure took place in the new Sickbay as we launched, Miss Grant, had an accident with a knife and she required surgery, poor kid.

Our mission is to head through the Bajoran wormhole and get hold of some 'white', or at least I believe that is what was said. They should really but time limits on those meetings!

On another note, I must remember to wear eye protection to the next head of department meeting, looks like they were dealing out pips at the door of the Avenger when we departed!

Maybe I can learn something from them, well time will tell I guess.

My department has been extremely busy during the three week journey from Alpha to the Bajoran wormhole. In addition to ensuring that the Avenger was prepared for the rigors of traversing the wormhole, Scott, Aereson, and I went over the Madison with a fine tooth comb. From the looks of things she’s one hell of a tough little ship. Here superstructure definitely shows that it has undergone some extreme stresses and strains. From what Aereson tells me, there are very few of the original hull plates remaining. She’s had a tough life and a testament to her class.

We’re about an hour out from bajoran worm hole and I’m starting to get a little nervous. Scratch that. Antsy. Yes, that’s a better way to say it. It’s that feeling an engineer gets the night before a big test of their design… through there really isn’t any reason that I should be. I’ve placed Scott in charge of handling the modifications to the Madison as he will be serving as the escort’s CEO for this run. I’ve handled the Avenger’s. We’ve gone of the modifications a dozen time each.

Perhaps it is just the fact that we’ll be heading in to Dominion territory… or at least what is left of dominion territory. A little feeling of home perhaps…

Strategic Operations Director Log, Stardate 21210.15 Commander Azernal Rin recording:

I am not happy about our mission. I understand why they assigned me to the Avenger - I know all the reasons I'm here, even the ones they probably were trying to be subtle about, but I wonder if this factored into my assignment. I wonder if they debated assigning me here or if some stuffy shirts somewhere thought 'enough time had passed' that it wouldn't be an issue anymore.

Captain Grant called it the Gamma Quadrant Wormhole. It's the Bajoran Wormhole. I don't appreciate that he tried to rename it.

I'm wary of the Vorta and the Jem Hadar. I don't think we can trust them - if I was them, in the situation they are in, would I trust myself? If I could go home, would I pass up on that chance? I don't know why Grant thinks we can trust them but I fear we haven't set up contingencies for their ultimate betrayal.

Grant is not known for diplomacy apparently. He is going to depend on me to smooth feathers - not something us Zakdorn are really known for. I'm not sure how to proceed. I feel there are a million unknowns - and not nearly enough known.

We'll see what happens.

Chief Science Officer's Log, Stardate 21210.22, Lieutenant Commander Judith Tucker recording.

The past weeks spent traveling to the wormhole have been filled with making preparations for our upcoming mission as well as getting to know officers in my new department, let alone the ship.

Science proposals have been filed and I am busy prioritizing them for completion.

End Log.

Personal Log, Stardate 21210.22, Judith Tucker recording.

With a few weeks behind me, I've adapted to my new home. I wish I could say the same about CJ. Moving from the Pegasus, to Delta and now the Avenger was hard enough but without many of the friends he knew, it's been more difficult. He'll make new friends, I'm sure, but not having his best friend Gabe has seemed to slow it down. I think it was easier when he was a baby. I didn't worry as much about him as I do now.

Work has been busy with officers filing their project proposals with me. Some have been very easy to decline, but the others I have had to prioritize. This was more difficult than usual, as I paused two projects that were particular strong in favor of a couple of projects from officers who were from the other world. I am trying hard to keep things balanced, though I've heard a few grumblings from officers already that I'm favoring those from the original Avenger.

I'm not sure what to think of the captain. While he looks like the captain I served under, he's not the same character. I felt an odd sense throughout our first senior staff meeting, as Grant seemed to be watching me. Have I done something wrong? Does he know that I'm supposed to send reports on how the two sets of crews are merging? I'm not sure what to write on my first report anyway. If the focus is going to always be on two sets of crews, then we won't be ever be one...will we?

Sigh. I think I need to redo the projects list. If I prioritize projects based on who requested them, then I'm as bad as those wanting me to write about two sets of crew. I have to accept and decline projects with the same criteria. That's the only fair way.

SD 21211.08 – CMR Kashar

Crewmans Log, Stardate 2121107, Crewman Recruit Kashar recording.

I met the Chief of Security today. He is an odd human, but then again most are. He is putting me in charge of a small special security team.. me. After the debacle in the Academy and loss of brass. I wonder how he expects his crew to respond to that. I'm barely a couple of standard months out of training. A few weeks posted in Starbase Alpha.. then suddenly transfered to Star Base Delta. I had barely had time to report in and already I was receiving orders to this mystery ship.

[silence]

I begin to wonder if perhaps I was never intended to stay on Delta, but to end up here on the Avenger. But why all the mystery? Why not be upfront and just give me the orders to the proper place and not just a dock number.

Regardless of my misgivings of Lieutenant Aldren's illogical decision, it is his to make. It is not my first time leading a team, I will begin reviewing the crew manifest after my next sleep cycle.

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21211.19

The James Madison has now officially launched from the Avenger, and gone through the wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. We've separated from the Avenger and are heading towards our destination, which is about 7 days away.

We'll be doing the seven days in stealth mode. Our only contact with the Avenger or anyone will be through monitoring a probe the Avenger has dropped. It'll give us the signal to 'go' or 'abort' when the time comes.

Hopefully, Grant can negotiate well enough that there isn't an immediate breakdown with the Dominion. If there is, they're going to have to find a way to stall because they're reaching the Dominion well before we are.

I was told that we can't detect the facility yet, not with passive sensors, and probably won't be able to for sometime, if we even can before we literally arrive there. That's not the best news I've received recently, but we've yet to detect any Dominion patrols, so I'll take what I can get.

I have enough faith in the marines and security that they can deal with the lack of intelligence effectively. However, I probably need to go discuss the possibility of no intel with Sierra… she'll be absolutely thrilled, I'm sure.

SD 21211.15 – Lt Jack Ristone

Medical Officer's Log Stardate 21211.15 Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Jack Ristone recording

Before leaving the USS Avenger for a brief mission on the USS James Madison I was politely 'informed' that I needed to do a better job of ensuring my logs are up to date. It seems this Star Fleet is a little more strict on that particular protocol. Now that I have some down time I feel this is a good chance to get caught up.

Shoreleave was hardly that for me and in all honesty I am okay with that. I spent most of my time either working on a project for Captain Grant to help easily identify a member of the original Avenger crew from their counterparts here in this dimension or proving to this Star Fleet that my medical knowledge and degrees were valid. Both tasks were a success. I was able to inject the Avenger crew upon the crew recall and this Star Fleet quickly determined that my medical knowledge was more than sufficient to practice medicine in this dimension.

Once back on the Avenger it took me a little bit of time to adapt to the ship being fully crewed once again. It has been ages since we left Starbase fully repaired and fully manned. Really it quite reminded me of when I first was stationed on Avenger before the war with the Romulans and Kyrnar began.

The Krynar ... what an interesting topic. I still remember the connection I had with the creature not to long ago. I still feel its manipulation in my head at times. Thankfully I can see it now for what it is ... manipulation. I know the feelings of sympathy or even loyalty are fabrications and that helps me to better fight them off ... most of the time.

Meshing with the new faces from this dimension has been fairly smooth. We have run into a few hiccups where people were a little uneasy about being treated by a doctor from another dimension. Those instances have been few and far between and have worked out okay in the end. A full crew however has also meant that the number of random injuries has increased a ten-fold. Most of our days on the Avenger were spent treating a variety minor injuries crewmembers sustained either on or off duty.

I was recently informed that I would be assigned to the James Madison for her temporary assignment. The news was presented to me that I would be the 'Acting Chief Medical Officer' on the J-M. This news shocked me for a few reasons. First, simply because I didn't see it coming and second because, although my career has been on a good path for years now, I wasn't sure I would ever be trusted in such a position.

The novelty of being even 'Acting' Chief Medical Officer however quickly lost its luster when I discovered that I would not only be the only doctor on the James Madison but the only member of the medical department. I suppose I should be glad to know that the medical tricorder was not promoted to C-M-O of the Madison over me ...

My time on the Madison however has been quite pleasant. The ship is small and the crew even smaller. This means that most of my time has been spent in the (even yet smaller) sickbay where I have caught up reading medical journals and even began working on curing tourettes syndrome which was cured in our dimension (though all the research is gone due to the space-rift erasing our previous ten year memory banks)

I read about a bug making its way through the Fourth Fleet. I therefore gave every member of the J-M crew a medical cocktail to boost their immune system as soon as we boarded. With a little luck that will prevent it from makings it way across this two-decked ship. After all, if a contagious virus hits a ship this small I am not sure I will be able to stop it. Thus far however, nearly seven days into our trip, I have not had one person complaining of feeling sick. Perhaps we will luck out ...

SD 21211.15 – LCdr Adam Shelmer

Personal Log, Stardate 21211.15 Lieutenant Commander Adam Shelmer recording:

It’s been about a month since I last logged in. After our mission briefing, I was on the bridge when the Avenger entered the Bajoran Star System. I noticed small craft activity among the flotsam that was the remains of a world and a station.

Though not his world or universe, the CO dealt swiftly with the scavengers.

Soon after, Lt Adams relieved me and I proceeded to the Madison. Upon arrival on the Madison, I was called to Crawford’s office and though I was not expecting it, I was offered the FO position, acting, of course, and a temporary rank upgrade to Lieutenant Commander. I was flustered a bit, but tried to accept the offer with grace.

Afterward I was informed that McKenzie would not be available to pilot the Madison, so I had to call Ens Sly Showmore over from the Avenger. He’s a bit green, so I’ll be keeping an eye on him.

With a pilot now in place, the Madison was approved for launch and she exited the Avenger, activated stealth mode and moved through the Bajoran wormhole without incident.

The Avenger followed, launching probes as its only form of communication with the Madison. The Madison set course for its intended destination while the Avenger noted several Dominion scout ships heading its way.

The Madison began its 7 day journey with the CO reiterating no weapons unless needed. No Dominion contact unless unavoidable.

Jumping ahead to just before the Madison’s arrival at the supposed Ketracel White facility, the Madison’s Science officer reported that their old nemesis from their universe, the Krynar, were present in ours.

The CO ordered the Red Alert Klaxon sounded which I did as well as suggest an approach which hopefully would keep us out of the Krynar’s sight and mind.

Strategic Operations Director Log, Stardate 21210.15 Commander Azernal Rin recording:

There were scavengers around my planet. Scavengers. I know we have a war on - but Star Fleet could have a little more respect for the dead. I have to tell you - as much as I long ago gave up hope on the Prophets - especially recently - I couldn't help but to feel some shred of hope they would reveal themselves to me in the Wormhole journey.

Of course - they didn't. We arrived on the other side without incident and there was an immediate response from a nearby Dominion Patrol.

Once communications had been established it turned out they knew more then expected - a lot more. We're being escorted by their patrol ships. This could turn out badly.

Chief Science Officer's Log, Stardate 21211.15, Lieutenant Commander Tucker recording.

We have set forth on our mission through the wormhole and make contact with the Dominion, hopeful to at least make an agreement to cooperation and possible aid, should it be necessary from either party.

My officers are working diligently on exploring the area, as well as staying alert to the incoming vessels.

Chief Engineer’s Log Stardate 021211.17 Lieutenant Commander Samantha Dramar recording

Well isn’t this fun. The trip through the worm hole went perfectly. Both the Avenger and the Madison performed beautifully. I can definitely say that the modification worked. That’s about where the good part ends.

As expected, our incursion was detected. Five dominion cruisers set themselves up on intercept course. Five days later they have now intercepted. We’re currently surrounded by five dominion vessels. We have our shields down, though the ablative armor is charged and powered at 100 percent. To make matters worse their officer in charge of the dominion task force surrounding is my best friend, the vota *****. Yay fun.

We’re now being taken, under our own power, to a dominion facility where they will decide what to do with us. I know we were allies back home, but that doesn’t mean I have to like them. We’re not allies here yet, and I’m feeling pretty vulnerable right now. They could do some serious damage to the Avenger before we even have a chance to respond.

SD 21211.17 – Ens Rurik Feng

Security Log, USS James Madison Stardate 21211.17 Ensign Rurik Feng recording:

I've been assigned to lead the Security detail for the USS James Madiosn. Our mission is to travel through the Bajoran Wormhole and secure a supply of Ketrecel White formthe Dominion. If negotiations abarod the Avenger fail, the James Madison will procure the White from a production facility known to exist in our Dominion. Whether it exists or not in this universe is unknown at this time. Furthermore, it reports from a previous mission through the wormhole indicate that the Dominion here has been attacked by the Krynar. Those reports claim that the Dominion no longer has any Jem'Hadar, though there it is impossible to know if the Dominion representatives encountered were telling the truth. So we are proceeding under the assumption that the production facility wil be guarded by Jem'Hadar.

Other than what Captian Grant remembers about the facility, and what little our Vorta have seen fit to divulge, we have essentially no intelligence on the facility. Our plan is let the Marine detail take the lead on the assault, with Security standing by as a reserve force. Unless the station is large enough to accomodate multiple assult forces. In that case, we will go with the Marines. I fully expect Commader Crawford to join my team during the assault.

My only concern is that Lieutenant Aldren decided to assign a rook to my squad. While I have no doubt about the quality of Crewman Dyer's training, she has no combat experience, and this is not the sort of mission for the inexperienced. I'll do what I can to see that she survives, but the odds of her survive on this kind of mission are low, given her lack of combat experience. Otherwise, our assualt plans are sound, and we should be able to adapt well enough to complete the mission. Let's hope that Captian Grant succeeds in secure the White diplomatically.

Security Log Stardate 21212.08 Lieutenant Aldren Recording.

The ship is currently en-route to try and secure a quantity of Ketrecel White. The Madison has been split from us and I have given the security detail of this to Feng….I’m not sure of him, I have read his reports and cannot make up my mind. I am hoping that he will perform as well as I am expecting…he needs a chance, I was given one.

This is mainly a new crew on the ship, a lot of replacements and crew fresh from the Academy. We all started somewhere and I have assigned a very young in service Officer, Dyer to the Madison. Her Academy grades were exceptional but she needs a proper bleeding to test her mettle.

Kashar has been tasked by myself to patrol the corridors of the Avenger. We are being ‘escorted’ by Jem’Hadar, and I don’t trust them…..I have other security patrols roaming the ship, all on standby. This is pretty much my first outing as CoS……I don’t know yet if I like it, life was simpler being just a grunt.

SD 21212.09 – Cdr Tyra Crawford

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21212.09

The seven day trip to the asteroid field where the Dominion facility should be went smoothly until recently.

We arrived near our coordinates and were preparing to navigate the field when we began to pick up gravitational anomalies. Our first instincts that it involved the Krynar have proved to be unfortunately correct. However, it seems like we've inadvertently stumbled across a home base of theirs. The patrols resemble the type you'd find on home territory where they're comfortable. It makes me feel comfortable continuing since they don't appear to be actively hunting, but it does mean that if we're discovered, we can assume that we will be vastly outnumbered even quicker than we might have expected otherwise.

I've instructed Shelmer and Edwards to find a way to contact the Avenger regarding this development and Add has indicated that they are close to a solution.

Shortly after deciding to continue on our route to the facility, I was contacted by Jack, our doctor, about a body found in the shower. He implied that it had something to do with the shower system, which has been turned off now. As far as I know, we haven't gotten an identity for the victim, but unfortunately, he/she wasn't the only casualty we've endured.

A few moments after Jack contacted me, the internal sensors registered phaser fire outside of Sickbay. I guess old habits die hard because I had an absolute need to find the cause; I left Shelmer in charge of the bridge, a task that I think he is more than up to. Although recent developments have made me question the foolishness of my own actions.

When I arrived at Sickbay, Dawson, Feng, and one of the Jem Hadar was standing around our youngest security officer, Dyer. She was covered in blood and Young, Kyber's replacement, or what was left of him, was laying against the wall. He was missing half his face and had a significant hole in his diaphragm but somehow he was still bleeding, even if it was a rather horrific sight. Apparently, he was infected with some sort of virus, and attempted to attack Dyer, which resulted in his injuries from both Dyer and then, Dawson.

Jack and I were discussing what to do with him when Feng decided to take it upon himself and shot Young a few more times before he could get away—the man could barely walk, I doubt it was a feasible escape attempt. If Young hadn't been so injured, I would have had a serious problem with Feng's actions, but Young was well beyond saving, even if the virus could be gotten rid of. As questionable as the metaphor may be, it's like putting a horse down after its seriously injured; it's better to put it out of its misery than make it die slowly and painfully.

That brings our casualties to two, and unfortunately, it seems that Young attacked someone before Dyer. That means that Dyer or the other victim could be infected. Jack says an antibiotic is the treatment but I'm worried that if someone gets far enough along with the virus, we'll lose the ability to treat the person without putting ourselves in danger.

Before Feng and Ikat'Ukan left to find Young's other victim, Feng strongly suggested I return to the bridge before it was locked down. I'm sure my answer of 'no' wasn't a surprise to the majority present. I'll even admit that more often than not, I'm a little too attracted to excitement, and this might be one of those times. Then again, Shelmer is more suited to the bridge and I'm a lot more suited for this type of situation.

If this thing spreads though, Lord have mercy on us all…

SD 21212.15 – LCdr Adam Shelmer

Personal Log, Stardate 21212.15 Lieutenant Commander Adam Shelmer recording:

Beginning with what has been going on with regard to the Avenger Tactical team… note I’m only guessing, given that I’m stuck without communications on the James Madison. As we are still receiving pings from the Avenger probe, I’m assuming the ship is intact and proceeding to make contact with the Dominion. Hopefully, Lt Adams was able to ferret out the message Edwards sent hidden in the background energy signatures about the Krynar being present in this system and about Crewman Young’s death.

Aboard the Madison, is also somewhat of a mystery, but given that the entire tactical team is stuck on the bridge with me, I’ve got a pretty good idea what is going on.

Crawford left me in charge to try to find out what security is having problems with. Turns out Young, the crewman I met in the Common Room Galley was sick, now dead. Hopefully, the doc’s inoculation I received has done the trick for me, because I feel pretty good… all things considered.

We are now in quarantine on the bridge being watched over by a rather large Mirak. The engineer stationed up here is now sick, having made a mess of the place.

Other than that, all is hunky dory…

SD 21212.18 – Ens Rurik Feng

Security Log, USS James Madison Stardate 21212.18 Ensign Feng recording

Begin Log:

We have had two deaths aboard the James Madison, one caused by some kind of malfunction with the showers. The other, some kind of disease. Doctor Ristone identified it as some mutant strain of the Martian flu. Somehow, I doubt the Martian flu turned people into walking corpses, which is what this disease does. It has already killed Crewman Larry Young. In what I assume to be the final stages of the disease, he attacked Crewman Dyer. It also appears that he attacked Crewman Rajino, who now appears to be infected with the disease. I've injected her with an antibiotic cocktail, as directed by Doctor Ristone, and am moving her to Sickbay, where it is hpoed that Doctor Ristone can find a cure.

Crewman Young was far too gone to be saved. In addition to becoming corpselike, he also was able to endure normally fatal wounds almost without effect. I put him out of his misery, both as an act of mercy, and to protect the rest of the crew. We've locked down the Bridge and the Engine Room, withe the Jem'Hadar pulling guard duty. Captain Dawson and her Marines are working with the rest of my squad to do a sweep of the ship. With any luck, Young and Rajino are the only victims of this disease.

SD 21301.13 – Cdr Tyra Crawford

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21301.13

Well, apparently, the Lord needs to have mercy on all of our souls because it seems like this virus isn't contained. To add to it, I've got either a very unfortunate malfunction or sabotage on my hands with the murdering showers, which have claimed another victim.

Feng and Ukan were able to locate and bring Young's victim to Sickbay. Rajino seems to be stable for the moment, but I worry that she might not be the last victim. Not only do we not have room for too many more victims but we also don't have the personnel to lose too many more. We're currently down to 20, 3 deaths and an infection/injury.

I'm taking the blame for one of those deaths. I told Dyer to use my stateroom to get Young's gunk off of her before it spread, but apparently, the shower incident wasn't localized to the bunkrooms. I had Dawson check on her to make sure she wasn't attacked but she was gone by the time the marines got there… only left her clothes and an oddly clean shower. I shouldn't have been so careless… I thought I was doing the right thing, but isn't that normally the case in these incidents? It's unfortunately not the first time that I let my compassion override my gut with ugly consequences…

If Aaron was still around, he'd say it's an unfortunate side effect of being a leader that cares, something I definitely learned from him… I'm sure my father would say it's just a weakness. Sometimes, I wish I could be as detached as he is…or even, like Thomas. My record might say otherwise, but I hardly think I could stomach knowingly sending people to their death...

Of course, I can see this situation with some detachment, and it's not pretty. If we lose too many more, we might start becoming operationally compromised. I didn't lose three people to not bring KW back…it'd be a waste.

Getting this virus under control is my biggest concern. With the bridge locked down, they are protected from the virus, but I think I'm going to need them to help solve both of our problems…neither Jack nor I can focus on the causes of these problems when we're having to deal with the actual manifestation.

Hopefully, they have better luck than we do.

The ship is still on route to our meeting with the Dominion. We are being escorted, although it feels like we are being taken into custody more. There is something happening on the ship....the replicators and showers are either malfunctioning or have been sabotaged. Either way it's costs us the lives of some crew.....some kind of acid in the system.

The records show that only Tucker has authority to create the stuff...I can't believe she would have, she couldn't. I'm hoping it's a terrible malfunction...I'm working with Dramar to try and get to the bottom of it.

SD 21301.15 – LCdr Adam Shelmer

Personal Log, Stardate 21301.15 Lieutenant Commander Adam Shelmer recording:

The month began with cleaning up Braxton’s vomit and fixing his bloody nose. Oh joy. We were left trapped on the bridge in quarantine with the smell. Though eventually cleaning supplies were transported up, I’m not sure any of us left on the bridge are too happy about it.

We finally got some analysis of the KW facility. It seems to have no shields, no ships or buoys or anything impeding our approach. There is a large docking bay and a defense polaron cannon with a 270-degree firing arc to protect the Bay. We could easily circumvent it by approaching from the opposite side, which I suggested until we started getting unreliable information concerning the facilities personnel.

At this point we think there may be 11 personnel, but only 4 are showing, a Vorta, 2 Wadi and a weak Jem’Hadar which suggests some are hiding and undetectable or our equipment is giving inconsistent or false readings.

I am currently working with an Engineer to try to devise a probe which may give more conclusive information.

The Avenger is experiencing problems with her replicator system, specifically with the replication of water. Instead of water, a high restricted acid is generated. So far at least one crew member has been killed. The Captain’s girls were nearly among them. Thank God they called the bridge. Otherwise… well…

We’re doing the best to track the problem down. We don’t know if it is a malfunction or something far worse. The only person with the authority to replicate that acid is the Chief Science Officer. Right now, Aldren and I are keeping that fact to ourselves as there is no reason to believe that is behind this... malfunction… this accident… this possible murder.

[sigh]

I’ve tracked the problem to a code kernel installed by Star Fleet during the Avenger refit. I’ll never know why I ever let their so called engineers touch my ship. Apparently they took code straight from a breen computer and popped it right into our upgrade. They said they tested it but who knows. Maybe it didn’t play well something on board the Avenger

I won’t know for sure if this is the cause of the problem until I can dig it out of the main frame. It’s going to be a long night.

The trip through the wormhole was for the most part, uneventful. After separating from the James Madison, things got a little trickier aboard our ship. We seem to be experiencing difficulties with the replicators creating some sort of acidic liquid. Our chiefs in both security and engineering are working diligently to correct the problem. I have begun working on the issue as well.

We are approaching the planet and our Diplomatic mission should kick off soon. I don't harbor a lot of hope in the Captains ability to be diplomatic. I know I just haven't seen that side of him - but I'm just not all that confident that that 'side' of him exists. Of course, I still struggle to see him as a 'father' despite the evidence I have seen like him interacting with his girls, or being worried about them when something happens. He certainly wears a lot of hats.

I am still on uneven footing in regards to the information that the Dominion possesses about us. Couple that with the recent malfunctions of the replicators and you've got one jumpy set of senior officers. Below decks - no one really knows what is happening, but up here we all know slightly too much to be relaxed.

I have a feeling that the Captain is going to ask me to accompany him on the diplomatic mission which could mean being stuck in meetings for hours. I'm not certain that the ship is ready to be left without a strong leader to navigate through what is happening. I'm not saying I don't trust the rest of the Bridge crew to function - I'm just saying that they don't have the proven track record some of the rest of us have. Or at least - not in my mind.

This log is filled with negativity - have I become this much of a pessimist?

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21302.12

Things have gotten significantly worse. While the virus seems to have been contained for the moment, we have suffered two more casualties and unless Doctor Ristone is incorrect, Rajino's addition to that list is inevitable.

The two we've lost since my last log are Borkwith and Kharrea. We're unsure of how Borkwith was infected but all evidence suggests that she infected Kharrea, an act which she was brutally killed for. Of all the deaths, I think it's Kharrea's that affects me the least. She was a monstrous ***** when things were perfectly fine… I can't imagine what she would have been like had the infection been able to run its course. We're unsure of how she died, but a complication with the virus' treatment seems to be the leading theory.

It should be pointed out that in the process of killing Borkwith, it seems that Kharrea compromised a good portion of food and water supply. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but given certain developments, it has become very problematic.

We have made headway on the shower issue. I turned it over to Edwards and he has informed me that the problem is actually tied into the coding on the software updates for the replicator system. This unfortunately affects multiple systems, including the showers, emergency sprinklers and potentially, the transporters. I mentioned earlier that part of our food supply has been compromised and without replicators working, it might be a very long trip back to the wormhole.

Jack and I have found a rather unexplainable phenomenon in this problem though. The production of acid from both the showers and the replicators seems to be tied into the gender of the operator. Jack was able to produce a glass of water while Rajino and I both ended up with acid instead. What's causing this exactly is unknown but I've passed the information on to Edwards, who hopefully can do something with it. If nothing else, I guess we'll assign a designated replicator operator that is most definitely male...

In addition to both of these situations, the away mission has started. The Avengers' probe ceased transmitting about 15 minutes ago, and the team was put on the ground as quickly as possible. The virus has whittled the teams down to two, but Dawson seemed confident that they could still accomplish their mission.

I think I surprised myself by not going into the facility. I wanted to—Thomas is more than right when he says that I can't help but want to be involved—and this is the kind of mission that I excel at. However, with all the losses, I need to make sure that the virus was under control and stays that way. Maybe, if I had less faith in Sierra or I didn't think that Feng was a very capable security officer, I would have but it seemed like overkill when there were so few security people to monitor the outbreak. I wouldn't have been able to deal with myself if we'd lost more people on-board.

We just need to get through this with at least half of the crew intact. Earlier I would have said that would be a walk in the park... now, I'm wondering if it won't take a miracle.

SD 21303.12 – Lt Jack Ristone

Medical Officer's Log 21301.01 Lieutenant (JG) Jack Ristone recording:

Speak of the devil and he will come ... I've heard the saying a hundred times throughout my life and you would have thought that I had learned my lesson by now. In my previous log entry I marveled at how glad I was that the virus making its way through the Fleet had not infected anybody on the Madison and now I am attempting to find a cure to a virus unlike any I have ever seen before.

I suppose I should start from the beginning. I was initially called to the crew showers where a body was discovered. The body, what was left of it, had been mutilated by an acidic compound that somehow mixed with the shower's water supply. Crewman Young, who had discovered the body, was extremely pale and nauseous. I initially believed these symptoms to be the result of stumbling across such a horrific sight. I had the Crewman escorted to sickbay while I took samples in the showers.

Before I could reach sickbay I was told I needed to remain where I was until sickbay could be swept by security personnel. It seemed that Crewman Young had snapped and attacked his escort, a woman named Rajino, and had bitten off her nose. By the time I was allowed to return to sickbay I was able to try to assess Young's condition. I was able to verify that he had a strange strain of a martian flu that was thought to be extinct. What was really strange was the fact that the virus had mutated in such a way that Young was unresponsive, unreasonable, violent, and a danger to the crew.

Although I did not (at the time) agree with the decision one of the Marines killed Young before he could cause any more damage. As a Doctor I am unhappy that I did not get a greater chance to treat Young before such a decision was made. As a person who saw what Young had become I must say that I feel safer knowing he is dead. The morality of that truth is something I will have to deal with later.

At the moment I am attempting to discover who else might be infected. Young was functioning as our chef on the Madison. If this virus is contagious via standard methods there is a significant chance we could have a full outbreak on the Madison. In the meantime I have asked Commander Crawford to enact quarantine protocols which are not very sophisticated on a ship the size of the Madison. My greatest fear at the moment is that the limited sickbay on the Madison will prevent me from properly treating the virus.

SD 21303.12 – Lt Jack Ristone

Medical Officer's Log 21302.01 Lieutenant (JG) Jack Ristone recording:

I have confirmed that several other members of the crew are infected with what I am now calling "Young's Virus". It seems that if I catch the virus in its early stages and give the infected heavy antibiotics and fever reducing medicine that the virus can be curbed before it progresses to a fatal point.

This virus is still a very large mystery but my preliminary hypothesis is that the virus is generally a slow moving virus with a long incubation period. I do however believe the infection time speeds up exponentially when the virus is transmitted through non-standard methods such as biting. This would explain why Young showed no signs of being sick for a long period of time but why those who have been attacked are getting very sick very fast.

So far my attempts to cure those who have the severe form of the virus have been unsuccessful. What's worse is that Commander Crawford seemingly had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic I gave her and is currently unconscious, though thankfully stable. This could not have happened at a worse time as an away team just left for the facility to attempt to retrieve Ketracel White.

Kharrea, our resident Vorta, was also infected with the virus however her immune system reacted differently than I anticipated. Whether it was the virus itself, the medicine I have her, or some combination of those or other elements she did not survive. The Madison is not equipped to perform a full autopsy so I am leaving her body long until we reconnect with the Avenger and proper tests can be run.

The most haunting thing however was what I did just a few minutes ago. Rajinio, a crewmember whose infection had severely progressed, was beginning to exhibit the same signs that Young had. In addition to that it appeared that she was in an overwhelming amount of pain that could not be curbed regardless of the medicine I gave to her. In the end I did what I felt was humane and safe. Using Tyra's phaser on its highest settings I vaporized Rajino and ended what had to be unendurable suffering. I just hope that my soul can also find an end to the suffering it feels after taking her life.

SD 21303.12 – Lt Jack Ristone

Medical Officer's Log 21303.12 Lieutenant (JG) Jack Ristone recording:

Commander Crawford woke up earlier then I expected which is a good sign. Of course much of the medicine I gave her is still in her system which is making her quite loopy and fatigued. I have asked her to remain in sickbay for another hour or so to let the medicine better metabolize and absorb into her system. I fear that if she were to try and return to duty now she would just tire herself out in an hour or so and then be forced to go off-duty for a few hours.

The away team has returned to the Madison though they apparently suffered several casualties during the mission. They were however successful in retrieving several crates of K-W as well as raw ingredients which will help us to manufacture our own K-W in the near future. This by itself is a significant step forward in never needing to return to Dominion space ever again.

Apparently we ran into some Ferengi's while at the base. I do not have any of the details and I doubt I will get them any time soon. There is plenty going on in sickbay for me to concern myself with without adding bridge situations to my plate. All I know for certain is that we are seemingly in the clear now and are returning to the wormhole which should take us back to the safety of Federation Space where hopefully we will either reconnect with the Avenger or return to a star base. Either scenario will finally give me access to a proper sickbay and medicine cabinet where perhaps we can finally fully verify the cause and solution to this virus.

SD 21303.15 – Cdr Tyra Crawford

First Officer's Log Commander Tyra Crawford Stardate 21303.15:

I feel like I've been run over by a shuttle...

Apparently, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic that Ristone gave me as a preventative against the virus. I guess I should be happy that it was just an allergic reaction and not the incurable virus we've been dealing with. It would be rather cruel to have survived so many horrible situations only to be killed by a stupid virus.

Fortunately, the virus seems to be under control now, though I can't say it was because we found a cure. While I was unconscious, Jack put Rajino out of her misery, which was the right thing to do. Otherwise, we risked the virus spreading and keeping the girl in agony without any real hope for a cure. I don't think Jack is entirely okay with what he had to do, but honestly, if he was, I'd be worried that I had a sociopath for a doctor. I plan on keeping an eye on him while we are on the Madison...once we get back, I may see if Mihar can keep an eye on him because I'm certainly not making a habit of visiting Sickbay.

I haven't gotten a complete report on what's going on outside of Sickbay, but from what I can gather the rather fractured report from Shelmer and Feng's report, the facility we were sent to infiltrate was under the control of a Ferengi salvage company. It's safe to say that like most Ferengi, they were less than thrilled when their profit was threatened. I don't know how Shelmer dealt with the situation but the ship is still in one piece, even if there were some close calls.

As far as the away team goes, they were able to acquire our objective, along with some additional goodies. However, they lost three Jem Hadar and apparently, Private Kripki was killed when the Ferengi fired into the facility's landing bay. I haven't received all the reports but Feng is accusing Shelmer of failing to warn the away team of the potential for weapons fire at the facility and for general failure to communicate adequately.

Having been in Feng's shoes before, I completely understand his frustration and I have every intention of looking into the matter. If Shelmer did fail to appropriately communicate with the away team, something needs to be done to rectify the shortcoming—though what that is, I have no idea yet but I don't plan on ruining any careers either. I guess it'll all depend on what exactly I find in those reports...I sure hope it was nothing more than Shelmer getting overwhelmed and not outright negligence.

I guess that means our seven day trip back to the wormhole will be spent combing through reports and talking to the needed parties. Hopefully, I can get support to decontaminate my stateroom in the next few hours because I'm really not looking forward to sleeping in a bunkroom... though I guess the bunkrooms will have some free spots on the trip back.

Actually, I really don't think I care where I sleep as long as we meet up with the Avenger and make it back to Delta without any more chaos occurring. I think homesickness might be a vast understatement for what I'm feeling.

SD 21303.16 – Cdr Azernal Rin

Strategic Operations Officer's Log Star Date 21303.176 Commander Azernal Rin

What a ****** up mission. At the end of my last log I had wondered if I had become a pessimist. Perhaps more of a realist.

Commander Tucker seemed to have run the ship quite admirably while we were gone, and for that I give her credit. She beamed us out just before our demise too - something I will have to thank her for later.

On the planet, all weapons were removed, unsurprisingly, and we were escorted through a long, seemingly unnecessary path to a strange building that seemed out of place in structural design and location. Still, we went in and soon came to a room.

There, we discovered that Kharrea had indeed betrayed us, as had one of the Jem Hadar. We were also in the presence of a Founder. The talks...went badly from the beginning As I had suspected, the Captain had a very small fuse that he was unable to keep a lid on. The man was easily bated and quickly the meeting derailed off topic.

The Dominion, it seemed, knew everything. They knew of the Avengers true purpose here and of the Madison's "secret" mission to procure actual K-White from the facility. There wasn't much to negotiate for. The Dominion demanded an escort to the Alpha Quadrant where they wanted the freedom to invade. They apparently thought that since the space they wanted at this moment wasn't the Federations, we wouldn't mind.

I'm certain they didn't expect us to agree. Which is why they had Krynar standing by. As I was contacting the Avenger, which was apparently surrounded and unable to leave, a Krynar joined the 'negotiations'. Of course, our Jem Hadar, the only armed members of our away team, opened fire. Even the defector fired on the enemy. They were quickly torn apart - literally - by the alien. There had been no negative reaction to the Krynar to their weapons. Earun was struck by a stray bullet, having put his body in the way to protect the Captain.

Then, the Krynar invaded the Captains mind. Much like the kneeling Founder and Vorta, the Captain was forced to a similar position of worship and began talking about enlightenment.

I stepped forward, determined to help, but severely at a disadvantage. What could I do against a Krynar, a room full of armed Jem Hadar, a Vorta, a Founder, and an alien planet that would likely tear me apart should I actually manage to escape?

I quite literally yelled at the Krynar to stop. It did, turning its attention to me.

I felt Bajor be destroyed. As if I was standing on the planet as it happened. I felt the panic, the fear. I felt the air grow hot. I felt my flesh overheat and begin to melt from my bones. I felt the pain of dying as I watched my planet be torn asunder. I felt the death. So much death. ]

The recording paused as the man in front of the screen broke down sobbing. It was almost two hours later that the recording resumed.

[The Captain ground out an order to get what remained of the away team out of there, but I had no options. Thankfully, Commander Tucker transported us away at that very moment. The Captain was injured from the force of his resistance against the Krynar mind and was transported to Sickbay. I sent Ironfist to watch him - to make sure he wasn't converted to one of the enemy.

As if I don't have enough of a record of mutiny on my hands. If the Captain orders us anywhere but the wormhole to return to the Federation, I'll have to relieve him of command until we can be sure he is thinking with his own mind.

SD 21303.16 – LCdr Adam Shelmer

Mission Log, Stardate 21303.16 LtCdr Adam Shelmer recording:

Apparently my negotiating skills are lacking, because instead of the giving us a pass to get out of his business, I must have said something he didn't like because he just decided to power his weapons and shields AND come toward the landing bay entrance. I even offered to pay for the K-W we needed. Well now that I think back on it, I was hoping letting him know we had a virus on board would have him give us a wide birth and let us exit, but instead he decided to blow us up inside the asteroid.

I notified the Away Team that a Klingon ship owned by the Graff & Griff, a Ferengi Consortium, had filed a salvage claim on the asteroid and that they should get what they came for and get back to the ship.

I tried to calm the Ferengi Daemon, but he would not return my hails so I ordered the Away Team to tag whatever they wanted to bring back and we'd beam them and it out once the transporters were working.

I ordered the Madison into stealth mode and to exit the asteroid. Just moments before the Ferengi vessel arrived and blew it apart, I ordered Braxton to pull out the Away team first, and then anything they had tagged.

With the Away Team on board, I ordered the Madison away. Though we were in stealth mode, the Ferengi followed us. I tried an old maneuver to shake him and it seems the maneuver worked as the Klingon/Ferengi vessel was no longer following us.

Soon after we received a message from the Avenger to return home, I ordered a slight detour to send a reply, then to make haste for the wormhole.

Now that the Madison is out of danger and moving in warp, I've decided to take a break, clean up, get something to eat and check in on the CO.

Mission Log, Stardate 21303.16 Lt Shelby Adams recording:

I was ordered to fire upon the drones that were swarming to protect our escort Dominion ships. After my phaser fire hit pay dirt and several were destroyed, the remaining shard drones contracted, now appearing just 500 meters away from the Avenger. Then before our eyes the escort ships shimmer and broke apart. They became 5,000 Krynar shard vessels. These new shard vessels began targeting the civilian ships in orbit above the Wadi world. Tucker ordered me to fire on any of the shards through the orbs and not to stop. I continued firing until I could see that the shards had broken off their attack on the civilian craft, and were now forming a large star.

Tucker ordered me to fire torpedoes at the star forming shards, which I did. Luckily the torpedoes hit their marks and the star formation and the singularity they were forming was destroyed. Nick beat me to reporting that three dozen Dominion ships were heading our way. Ryan flew us in to pick up the Away Team, but we only got three on board before our window of opportunity to get out of there had closed. We moved out, sent a message to the Madison to go home and we headed for the wormhole.

I soon realized we were being followed. Seems a Vorta vessel wanted to know what we were doing in the Wadi system. Tucker is now negotiating with them to retrieve our remaining Away Team members.

SD 21303.16 – LCdr Judith Tucker

Star date 21303.16 Chief Science Officer’s Log, Lieutenant Commander Judith Tucker.

We have not been successful in our diplomatic talks. While the captain was on the planet with the away team, the Avenger seemingly was fooled into a situation with the Krynar.

The Avenger was surprised by the sudden change in our host, as they surrounded us by small orb-like objects that were released from their cargo bays.

I made the mistake of still trusting they were who they said they were, and didn’t react as swiftly as I think other officers would have liked. I attempted to hail the vessels and the planet, but after no reply, took action by firing upon the orbs. It was after destroying some of their orbs that we discovered our hosts were not as they seemed. The Avenger was now facing thousands of Krynar shards while still being surrounded by their orbs.

While the Krynar began destroying other ships in the area, the Avenger began destroying the orbs. Thankfully, they were easily destroyed. The orbs were really quite amazing, changing their tactics swiftly. They hoped to combine their strength by attacking us together. Lieutenant Adams was quick to render their plan useless.

Our next threat were the many Krynar who were already beginning their formation to bring their mother ship. Thankfully our crew was ready and were able to dispatch that threat.

We were at least somewhat successful in rescuing some of our team from the planet and able to begin a quick retreat towards the worm hole. Before we cleared the area completely though, we encountered another force.

I had a small discussion with a Dominion lead ship that interrupted our leaving. They appeared to scan us heavily. After which, their captain mentioned we were not a Krynar doppleganger. I’m hopeful my science officers managed to get some new data concerning their scan so that we can begin work on that ourselves.

As we are headed for home now, I have begun processing my performance.

SD 21303.17 – LCdr Samantha Tucker

Chief Engineer’s Log Stardate 021303.17 Lieutenant Commander Samantha Dramar Recording

I had successfully tracked down the problem with the replicator and went to the bridge to talk to Lieutenant Commander Tucker about implementing the solution, which would require taking all water replication systems off-line included transporters, when all hell broke loose. A “dominion” vessel that was actually a doppelganger krynar vessel released shards that surrounded the Avenger.

Apparently things had gone south with the away team’s negotiations as the shards attacked us. Initially they did little damage as they were searching for a weak point in our shields. We successful fought off the krynar bastards and prevented them from summoning a “doughnut” mother ship. After picking up what was left of the away team we made for the wormhole. However, we were pursued a much small dominion vessel.

They hailed us, and then proceeded to scan us. The scan caused systems ship-wide to flicker. Apparently they have discovered some way to pierce the krynar concealment. I’m definitely going to work with Tucker to try and replicate the tech. If we can, then perhaps we can take away one weapon in their arsenal… of course they have plenty of other weapons left.

SD 21303.17 – Ens Rurik Feng

Security Officer's Log, James Madison Stardate 21303.17 Ensign Rurik Feng recording

Begin Log:

The assault on the Ketracel-White production facility was successful. We recovered enough to White to last our remaining Jem'Hadar for several months. We also recovered a great deal of raw materials with which to produce our own White. We failed to recover any of the processing equipment, though we did recover several hundred polaron rifles. Our security and Marine detachments will no doubt put the weapons to good use, providing Starfleet Command let's us keep them.

The facility had been abandoned by the Dominon, and hadn't been occupied by the Krynar. It was, however, being salvaed by a Ferengi crew. We intrerrupted their operations, eliminating the salvage team during our seizure of the facility. In response, their ship, a Klingon cruiser, opened fire on the facility, ultimately destroying it.

We lost three Jem'Hadar in the assault, and Private Kripki during exfiltration. The Jem'Hadar died fighting the salvagers. Private Kripki died after Lieutenant Commander Shelmar ordered the assault team to mark the containers and equipment we had identified, and then return to the ship. He was in the facility's docking bay, and was killed when the Ferengi ship targeted the docking bay. Lieutenant Commander failed to alert the assault team that the Ferengi were targeting the docking bay and that he was ordering the James Madison out of the bay. It is uncertain whether Private Kripki was killed by our own engine exhaust as the James Madison departed, or by the destruction of the bay by the Ferengi. The remaining members of the assault team were then beamed out, along with the marked crates of raw materials and equipment. The ship is now heading for the wormhole. With luck, we'll reach it withour further incident.

Personally, I believe Private Kripki's death to be the end result of Lieutenant Commander Shelmar's failure to communicate effectively. Under the circumstances, ordering the team back to the LZ was imprudent at best, negligent at worst. Whether Shelmar's lack of effective communication was born out of inexperience or carelessness, I can't say for sure, and Commander Crawford has asked my to keep my opinions on the matter to myself. Besides, it's her problem now. Regardless of the why, Kripki's just as dead.
