Sheridan Mission 13: "Unintended Consequences"

From Federation Space - Official Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The USS Sheridan was assigned the task of exploring the planet Telbar, one of seven worlds in the large Dalmatia System near the Cardassian border. Although initially catalogued as a C Class planet, further investigation discovered it was a P Class planet, which meant that it was possibly an inhabited world. Thus, the Sheridan was sent on what was hoped would be a First Contact mission.

However, on arrival it is discovered that the planet is uninhabited and that the planet had four, massive gravitic tractor beam generators embedded within. This was what helped keep all the planets in the system stable and when sensors showed, that the gravitic tractor beams generators, though still active, were loosing power, and if they failed would cause cataclysmic events for the planets in the system.

When the Sheridan sends down a team to the ruins on the surface, two strange drones are launched from the planet and start attacking the Sheridan. When these are defeated another two appear, more sophisticated that the last two which prove to be harder to defeat. It is then that they discover the drones are being controlled from another base on the planet and a second team in dispatched to destroy this. It is then, that another, lone drone is launched and engages the Sheridan in combat.

Meanwhile planet side, a second team sent to destroy the drones control centre come under attack by more drones and the first team become trapped in the generator complex. However, the second team successfully reach the control room and are informed by a hologram that the drones are part of a defensive system for the planet to defend against the Iconians. Not long after the first team manage to repair the systems and the drones suddenly become inactive and the away teams return to the Sheridan.

Everything seems to be going smoothly so far. Mr Sothrick’s tactical scenario went well, and I’m confident this crew are up to whatever fate brings us.

The rendezvous at Charlie and the subsequent meeting went well, it appears that we are journeying to the Dalmatia system, which is close to the Cardassian border. Although we won’t be alone as the Philly, Pegasus and Copernicus will be taking part in a joint exploration mission. Starfleet has chosen four particular planets out of 101 for us to each check out; the mention of Iconian artefacts doesn’t bode well in my book. If anything, I suspect we shall be receiving guests at some point – time will tell.

Our Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Kane has requested a private meeting between Alex and myself. This is a mystery and I’m intrigued about the Chief’s reluctance to talk at the DH meeting. Still, I’m sure he will reveal what its all about. We are currently en-route to Dalmatia in tandem with our colleagues, so I’m looking forward to my first mission as CO.

Things have moved on since my last log. It seems that SF Command needed our Chief Engineer Lieutenant Kane more than we do. It’s an incident, that I feel the FO and myself should have been privy to, the fact that there was a lot of secrecy about Kane’s work made his abrupt departure more strange. I cannot understand the way Command appropriated our Chief like that.

Kane’s replacement is an Andorian female, Lieutenant Junior Grade sh’Zarath who seems pretty competent and also had Kane’s approval. So far I have no reason to doubt the Chief’s abilities, time will tell.

We have arrived at the Planet Telbar in the Dalmatia System. Our orders are to investigate the planet and to see if there are any life signs. Our initial scans haven’t detected any so far, which is a disappointment as we had an opportunity of a First Contact mission. However, we have detected that this planet houses four Gravitic Tractor beam systems placed at each region. The Northern sector seems to be suffering a major power loss, which could affect the whole system and possibly destroy it.

I have ordered an Away Team comprised of Engineers, Science and Security personnel, led by Lieutenant Commander Ankar to go planet side using one of our shuttles, to hopefully find out what has happened, and what chances we have, of repairing the damaged systems.

Being this close to Cardassian space still makes me a little nervous, though I’m confident the Sheridan and her crew will be up to the task.

It seems as if the gods have been against us from the start. Alex and his team were attacked as they made their way to the planets surface in the Winchester by drones launched from the surface. The last we knew was that they had crash landed near to their destination. A sudden storm then cut off any contact with them, and interfered with our sensors. During a space battle we managed to destroy the two initial drones relatively easily, though another two were launched to replace them. These two were more difficult to deal with and we eventually managed to damage them enough that they became dead in the water.

However, our sensors revealed that they were going to explode and we just made it when they did so. There was a lull, during which, it was discovered that the control of all the space born drones and those planet side were possibly being controlled in a building on the planets southern continent. Mr Sothrick and a small team were beamed to that location and we received an urgent com that they were under attack by drones. Attempting to beam them aboard the signal was somehow interfered with and the team were beamed into the very building they were attempting to access. Since then another storm had appeared in that area and we have lost contact with team B.

Now the Northern storm has departed and we had regained a sensor lock and communications with Alex and his team. It appears they are trapped by drones within the Generator complex and are still trying to repair the tractor beams. I wished to get them out, but the sudden appearance of a single, larger drone has curtailed that idea, and we are even now on an intercept course.

Since my last recording we have retrieved the Away Teams and fixed the problem with the GTB’s on Telbar. Our final run-in with the single drone ended with its own self-destruction, along with its missiles – Fortunately, as it had brought our forward shields down and we were wide open for the remaining missiles to hit.

With the destruction of the drone and the planet side attackers becoming inactive, we were able to withdraw our people, which was a relief. Though, it saddened me that we lost one of Mr Sothrick’s personnel and an engineer aboard the Sheridan during the drone’s attack. However, everything seemed to get back on track and the GTB was working perfectly, so we started our return home.

On our return journey I received orders for us to set a new course to Earth, and Starbase Alpha. The Sheridan has been re-assigned to the 1st Fleet due to an invasion which has destroyed Bajor, Starbase Charlie, Sierra 18 and several of the 3rd Fleet’s ships. What our orders will be waits to be seen. Though I have a feeling we maybe called for combat operations.

On a lighter note, several of my crew have received promotions. Alex has now reached Commander, which I feel was truly well earned. He has been pure gold in regards to being my First Officer. We also have a new CTO, in Jason Simmons and a young Tactical officer called Johnny Blade, being made Ensign. Our ACOS has been promoted to Lieutenant and made full Chief of Security; I feel that Sothrick will be an appropriate advantage in that position for the ship.

Medals were also approved for Alex, Jason, Tourock and Mr Blade for all their help in our last venture. I’m proud to serve with this fine crew and look forward to our next mission – whatever that maybe.

So many new faces this time around. I don't think I've had this amount of fresh names and fresh voices to keep tabs on since I was first assigned to a Federation starship.

We're heading to Dalmatia, a massive super system of over one hundred planets, where we, along with the Pegasus, Copernicus and Philadelphia, have been assigned to task of exploring just four. Cardassian interception, Iconian artefacts, First Contact, Ion storms...all potential issues that we could encounter during this mission. There's something about sitting in those briefings that can come off as a little depressing - always searching for problems, always demanding to know the worst and yes, these are necessary evils of rubbing shoulders with the dark red boys and girls. But I can't help but worry that, as my career continues, so does the magic of what we do day after day fade with time. We're exploring the biggest system any of us are likely to ever see, filled with all kinds of incredible phenomena and new species that we could make contact with.

I can see the excitement in the eyes of most of the junior officers, I just hope they can still see it in mine. Every now and again I like to take a moment for myself - such as this actually - and remind the duty-bound and increasingly cynical part of my brain just how incredible it is to be where we are, doing what we're doing, seeing what we're seeing.

The Sheridan is better than it has ever been in my opinion...then again, maybe I would say that! The crew is ready, no doubt about that and they're desperate to get into the thick of things - as am I. I've said it before and I'll say it again: it remains a great comfort and continues to make my job a lot simpler to have a CO whom I know I can trust and serve without qualms. Ben and I are about to guide this little destroyer into the unknown and she's gonna need all the guts she can get to still look shiny coming out the other side.

I always look back on my most recent log before embarking on a mission, reading the flurried thoughts of my past self as if it were an imposter. I remember being excited about seeing Dalmatia, about the possibilities we were facing with such a rich and diverse area of planetary bodies. Space continues to be the most beautiful evil there is.

Let me start off by confirming that worries over Cardassian intervention ended up being inconclusive, a fact that surprises me given the usually diligent and belligerent nature of our Alpha Quadrant brothers. Wasn't it the great Jean-Luc Picard that said you shouldn't spend too long near the Cardassian border with making your intentions known? Our hopes of finding Iconian artefacts - a major bullet point at the mission briefing - also seemed to trail away not long after planetfall. And last but not least, our dreams of making first contact with an intelligent species were also dashed after the first scan - Telbar was not without its habitants, but more on them later. [There is a pause] Still, this is mere speculation. From my time on the mission, I neither heard nor saw anything of the other ships assigned to the Dalmatia system and the wider spanning politics of a mission such as this are likely to go beyond even the ears of our Commanding Officers. I've slowly learnt over the years not to trouble myself with such trivialities.

We arrived at the cold and harsh planet Telbar to find that a massive gravity generator (one of several across the system), likely responsible for holding together such a cornucopia of planets and other celestial bodies, was failing to maintain its power output and that a system collapse was imminent without any attempts of intervention. Presently unanswerable questions started gaping open almost immediately - why were these generators here? Who built them? At the very least we were able to ascertain that they had been around for many thousands of years, but that was as far as our attempts at historical excavation took us.

An Away Team consisting of myself, Simmons, sh'Zarath, Nox, Boorman, ch'Tok, ch'Kolan and Templar left in the shuttle Winchester with the objective of landing on the surface of Telbar, entering the complex that surrounded the generator we had discovered and attempting to repair the generator. The Winchester was attacked by some kind of automated defence system consisting of drones not long after entering the atmosphere. We made a crash landing and, after a close firefight with more land-based drones, eventually managed to find a derelict shuttlebay that served as an entrance to the generator complex. It became apparent that we had not been the first outsiders to breach the building, as signs of a past battle were rife amongst the dark, dilapidated corridors, but no further drones hindered us until we reached the generator room itself.

The team found itself in an awkward position, with drones closing on the generator room and our Chief Engineer attempting repairs from a control room we discovered several floors above the main area. Gathering a hasty defence (one which I'm glad didn't end up being tested) both aspects of the team fought against time to regain control of the situation and, for a few minutes before the end, I confess that I found myself pessimistic of our safe return to the Sheridan. I've never felt quite so close to my fate...even in the most chaotic firefight I feel in control of my welfare...waiting for a failure that seemed incorrigible was a powerful experience for me. Nevertheless, thanks to some superb work from Lieutenant sh'Zarath, the generator's power output was restored and the drones somehow deactivated. Even the planet itself breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

And now here I am, at the end of my second full mission as First Officer. I currently find myself with insufficient time to be scared or disappointed or curious for my future...the Sheridan is returning to base and the crew are having some well earned rest...I will return to this log at a later date.

Well, that was certainly a memorable duty shift. Liable to go down in the annals of history.

I don’t believe that it would have been possible to divert any more power from any other subsystems without compromising the safety of the ship. I must remember to make time to write a report for Lieutenant sh'Zarath, pointing out how I believe the entire ships EPS grid should be reconfigured.

The other members of the bridge crew seem proficient. Though I do find Mister Blade to be rather loud for my liking, though at the same time there seems to be something else that I cannot quite put my finger on. He was most helpful in assisting me to sickbay earlier after I received a small knock to the head.

During today’s action, I was going to make a formal complaint against Petty Officer Grayson for his seemingly insubordinate attitude, however in lieu of the possible stress brought on from the engagement and the death of Specialist Cache. Who seemed to be a competent crewman. I have chosen to take no action at this time.

On a separate note, I did have the privilege of working with Petty Officer Trueman for a short while on the bridge. She seemed to be a most… agreeable young woman.

With another tour of duty under the proverbial belt I find myself sat once more at my desk trying to think of something to say about it all. Well, something I don't mind being officially added to the ships logs anyway.

  • A slight pause and the sounds of a glass being filled*

I hate making personal logs.

  • another pause, accompanied by the sounds of a glass being drained*

Thats better. Once again I must commend the staff under my command for their efforts in the last mission. They are a credit to Starfleet and I know that I can rely on them as we head to SBA to join up with the 1st Fleet. It would be nice to think that we will all be rewarded for our efforts in Dalmatia with a lengthy spell of time off but something tells me that is unlikely. The news from Bajor is a hard pill to swallow and as a medical officer a double edged sword. While illness and conflict may keep me in a job no-one likes to hear news like that.

  • more sounds of a glass being refilled*

Cdr Vaughn's announcement has certainly changed the mood on board, I can't remember people seeming so anxious after a mission. The usual relief and anticipation has been replaced by something darker, more foreboding. One has to wonder what Starfleet thinks it can do to resist a force that has demicated a whole fleet and destroyed two starbases and a planet. Still, I think we can all find some comfort in looking around us at the people we serve with. From top to bottom everyone on board pulls together and rides it out, the same could be said of the entire Federation, not just the Sheridan so we shall just have to see.

Well, I'd better wrap things up here. I'm sure people are loitering about in Sickbay as I speak. Once more unto the breach dear friends as they say.

Acting Chief of Security
Lieutenant Junior Grade Tourock Sothrick Recording

I have been recently re-assigned to the USS Sheridan a small destroyer. With this new assignment I have been promoted to the ships Acting Chief of Security.

This transition was sudden and unexpected which left me unable to plan and get an understanding of my job responsibilities and department needs.

I have had a chance to speak with one Security officer whose very impressive file lead me to believe he was worthy to be promoted. I since have promoted him to Assistant Chief of Security which I believe will be a good fit. He is an Earthling and I generally seem to interact well with Humans. I already see him as a bit of a character himself but his thoughts seem pure and honorable.

As I have had some chance to interact with several facets of the crew and this ship seems very intriguing. The crew seems very capable but I get the feeling that most of the crew is new and my research says that even the Captain is new so perhaps I can become a part of a ship that could make history.

On a personal note as fate would have it I had met a young lady on Star Base Delta whom is also stationed on this ship. I have had little chance to further interact with her but I obviously feel an attraction for her.

This could have a further complication.

I hope that my time here is very productive and that I perform my duties more than well enough. I will attempt to fill my new role to the absolute best ability.

Now the ship is racing to its new destiny. We are heading to a Super System with over 100 planets. Our mission is to seek out possible first contact as well as possible relics and artifacts.

The mission is to sound innocent enough but in fact it is quite possibly very dangerous. We will be traveling very close to Cardassian borders and that alone could cause an issue. The Sheridan will be joined at least in part with the Pegasus and the Philadelphia.

In some ways I seem to find my self feeling responsible for both the safety of these two ships. I still feel in some ways that I am apart of the Pegasus crew. The Philadelphia really had only one reason for his worry of this ship. She already changed several things for me.

I must return to my duties, End Log.

I am returning to duty after being released from Sickbay. I was injured during our last mission. Our last mission had us exploring a planet in the Dalmation system. Once we arrived to the planet it was discovered that a Gravitic Tractor Beam Generators that were essentially holding the system together. The Sheridan launched a shuttle that apparently activated an automatic security drone. The drone subsequently shot down the shuttle and a strange storm rushed in cutting off all communications from them. At that moment drones launched again some converging on our downed away team. The Sheridan itself was also attacked by drones. I had divulged of a possible control center for the drones since we were not finding any life signs on the planet. I took a second team and beamed to the surface on the mission to get to the control center and find a way to shut it down.

When our second team comprised of myself CMR Holland, CMR Khalik and two engineering officer. CMR Perry and CM Watts beamed down we were also met with drones. We were pinned down when somehow the Sheridan beamed us into the structure we were looking for.

Not before CMR Khalik and Myself suffered injuries during the fight. Once inside we managed to move into the actual command center as it seemed. There we encountered a holographic controller that interacting with it briefly we understood that basically the guarding machines had killed and destroyed all life forms on the planet in the name to protect the planet.

Somehow the corrupted system was shut down what I have since found out by the second team. This system override seemed to make the drones … for the lack of a better word ‘crazy’ firing in random array.

This is how CMR Holland was shot and subsequently died of his injuries.

Once we have returned I was formally offered the full position of Chief of Security and I obviously accepted. With this position I was given another promotion. We were also given news of attacks on the Federation including the destruction of Bajor, Starbase Charlies and Sierra 118. This called for the disbandment of third fleet. Because of this we are now on our way to join First Fleet and at Starbase Alpha where we have been reassigned.

I will later after taking care of our death ceremony coordinate with the Commander to ensure our crew is ready for possible up coming events.

On a more personal note I, in the weeks it took to get to the Dalmation system, have spent more time with a young Deltan named Ensign Persephone Nox. She has utterly intrigued me. I have found that I have grown greatly fond of her. I am hoping to continue this relationship as I…At any rate now that I have a higher clearance rating I will not allow this to distract my own investigation. After taking care of current duty needs I will try to obtain the records that alluded me before.

On another side note I have also met a most intriguing woman but for far much more different reasons. I have found myself becoming the counselor to our ships counselor. She is a Betazoid female and I have been requested because of my degrees in Psychology as well as my abilities in telepathy.

{Just then a chime could be heard} At this time I will have to end my log.

I didn't have time until now to get a personal log going. After graduating from the Academy, I was assigned to the USS Sheridan. I boarded the destroyer after a short stay at StarBase Delta, where I was able to meet a few of the crew during the brief shore leave after their prior mission.

I have been assigned to helm during all of my bridge shifts. While I wouldn't mind a crack at the weapons station, I am content and pleased with my position at the helm.

I haven't gotten to truly bond with anyone on board, though I have made friends with most of them. The crew is great and I know we can be something others at Starfleet can hopefully be jealous of.

The CO, Commander Vaughn, seems like a great CO. He genuinely cares for his crew and shows it every time he's on the bridge.

Of those aboard, three people have truly stood out for me amongst the others, not including the CO. The current Acting Chief of Security, Sothrick, has made a great first impression on me when he ran a quick scenario that proved both difficult and fun. Though he can be hard to read, being Vulcan will do that to you, he does present some human qualities that I find admirable.

Another is the FO, LCdr Ankar. He seems to me to be the glue that has held the crew of the Sheridan together during the transition of the new CO from now-Commodore Dramar to Commander Vaughn. I respect him a lot for that, and I look forward to serving with him.

The last one was a nice new crewman in Sickbay. Her name is Lily Wray. She's roughly my age. She performed my rather curious pre-mission exam to ensure I was ready for duty. Though she was nervous, she did a good job. I managed to get a laugh out of it, and the tension died down after. I look forward to seeing her again, and possibly getting to know her better.

As is, we are now on our way to the Dalmatia System. From what I can remember, it's a super system with around a hundred planets. Three other ships join us on this mission. It seems like it won't be difficult, but then again, none of the drastic missions in Starfleet history ever were to begin with. I look forward to it, and am ready for whatever comes our way. It's almost time for my shift to begin again on the bridge.

Since I have the PADD out recording some scan results, I guess a log would be a good idea. Since my last log, I have had a few things happen. I believe I have established myself well on the ship. We have made it to Telbar, and I was assigned as pilot for the mission.

Things did not quite go as I think most of us thought or hoped it would. While scanning the surface, we detected Gravitic Generators, four of them, and one was rapidly losing power, which would be catastrophic for the system. An away team was assembled to fly down to the surface to investigate and possibly fix.

On our way down, we were attacked by unmanned fighters. The shuttle we were in, the Winchester, was shot down, and the First Officer, LtCdr Ankar, and I were able to crash land without casualties and a repairable ship.

There are strange things afoot as we wait here on the surface, taking everything step by step to finish the mission. Since we have currently lost comms with the Sheridan, we are unable to find out how they fared against the fighters, or if they're still there. I hope they are.

Time to give the report to Commander Ankar, will keep updates as much as possible.

Our mission on the planet Telbar is now complete. After fighting our way to the Generator Complex, we were able to locate and fix the problem, though we had some more close encounters with the drones we fought while our ACE Lt. sh'Zarath fixed the faulty generator. Though we all have some bumps and bruises, Ensign Nox suffered a mild concussion, and one of our Security Officers, Petty Officer Korn ch'Tok, was hit by a blast on our earlier battle with drones, we didn't suffer any casualties amongst the generator team and have all made it safely back to the Sheridan. The drones appeared to have malfunctioned or have otherwise been deactivated.

As of now, I record this log after a quick change into a clean uniform, about to head to the Bridge to either relieve one of the Tactical Officers, or for further orders possibly pending from the CO. I'll find out when I get there.

Shortly after leaving Telbar from our last mission, we received orders to change course from Starbase Delta to Starbase Alpha. The course change came as a surprise to myself, and possibly to the rest of the crew.

Not long after, I was summoned to the Ready Room along with LCdr Ankar, Ens Nox and Lt[JG] Sothrick. At first, I thought this would be a de briefing, but as it turned out, it was a promotions ceremony. Ankar was promoted to full Cdr, Nox to Lt[JG] and Sothrick to full Lt. I was also promoted to Lt[JG], after my promotion to Ensign had been forgone due to the Telbar mission.

Surprisingly, though a pleasant one, I was also appointed the position as the Sheridan's Chief Tactical Officer. Then the bad news came. Our reason for heading to Starbase Alpha was our re-assignment to the First Fleet. Our move probably came at the destruction of Starbase Charlie, Bajor, and Sierra-18, as well as the decimation of almost the entirety of the Third Fleet.

I was able to speak with Midshipman Blade, and make an assessment. He seems brash, but with the upcoming inevitable war, I feel we need the kind of brashness he brings. I believe he has the potential to be a great officer, and I look forward to seeing how he does when I'm around.

As we head to Alpha, I prepare for our war mentally. I know there will be many losses, considering what's already happened to Charlie, 18, and Bajor. I hope everyone else will be too.

This is my first personal log since I've boarded the Sheridan. I boarded the ship a starbase delta but I could not officially begin my duties. I was delayed due to a few paperwork issues during my stay at the academy. There was a disciplinary investigation, which I was eventually found innocent of all charges, however I due to this investigation I could not assume duty until it had been cleared.

My clearance finally was approved and I took my first bridge shift at the tactical station in the heat of the a battle with drones from Telbar's surface. A young Ensign was having trouble getting a lock on the drones, so without thinking I stepped in and assisted him, hopefully not over stepping my rank boundaries. Needless to stay the drones were destroyed.

In a way I think Commander Vaughn appreciates my unorthodox tactics, and in a way I think he understands that I was raised a little different than most of the other bridge officers. He's obviously a born leader and a mans man. Something I can definitely respect. I do have a problem letting other people help me with work though, my Daddy always taught me if you wanted something done right you do it yourself, but I would follow Commander Vaughn into any fight.

Which leads me to believe that during the next encounter with the drones I rubbed Chief T'Kol the wrong way with my actions, but at the same time she has no ego for me to bruise. Intriguing.

The next encounter with the drones showed some great flying from the helm with Ensign Farrell on the controls. I hope this whiz pilot I've been hearing Midshipman Simmons is as good as Farrell.

Then there was Byron. Casper. He will never know how much he kept my itchy trigger finger in check. He was pulling power from all over the ship and he kept us in the fight. When the dust cleared and we were the last ship standing, I think Mr. Byron became a little overwhelmed with emotion and had to relieve his stomach of it's contents in a moment of celebration. When I went to check on my new little buddy he had quite the bump on his head. I dropped him off with Lt. Boorman and he checked him out. I invited them both for drinks in the lounge after they finished up.

Mission one complete. The best feeling in the world was when we finally got the away teams back on board. Who knows what is in store for us next.
