Personal History

Early Life

Aeryn was born in the small town of Portree in the Scottish Highlands to Operations officer, Lieutenant Niall Miller and his civilian Botanist wife Iris, whilst the couple were visiting family during shore leave. With a shared love of old TV shows particularly of the Sci - Fi genre, their daughter was given the name of one of their favourite characters. The new family of three spent a further 3 weeks in their hometown before Niall received his next assignment with the additional bonus of being able to bring his wife and baby daughter, thanks to Iris’s Botany background. Their destination was a research station on Tamanga III in the Archimedes Cluster. A planet and area known for its unique flora & fauna as well as rare phenomena.

From the moment she could walk and talk, Aeryn adopted a rather cute Scottish accent despite living light years away from Earth. She developed an interest in botany, learning to cultivate and grow her own little piece of garden within the outpost itself. This interest flourished and by the time Aeryn reached seventeen, it seemed as though she would continue in that field. That was until she met Captain Jay Amirez and the crew of the USS Einstein. A vessel that was assigned to patrol the Archimedes Cluster.

The crew received a warm welcome from those who called the outpost home, not to mention actually getting to see the ship properly. A memory that always stayed with Aeryn, especially when disaster struck and the crew of the USS Einstein risked everything in order to prevent a rogue asteroid from crashing into the planet. Once everyone was safe and the damage repaired, Aeryn made the decision to apply to Starfleet Academy. A decision that was encouraged by her parents and when she got accepted, hitched a ride on the Einstein to Earth when the ship got recalled for repairs. Shortly after her departure, her Father Niall received a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and was put in charge of Operations for the entire outpost.

Starfleet Academy

Entering the Academy was something else entirely for Aeryn, who had been used to life on a small outpost away from most inhabited systems. At first she found it difficult to adjust but did make a friend in her Botany class. Thomas Foster was exciting, intriguing and everything, especially when they learned that they had shared interests. Spending time with him, attending her classes and absorbing life amongst different cultures and species, eventually led to the Cadet suffering a burnout as she became overwhelmed.

Despite Thomas’s best efforts, Aeryn found herself unable to function as she was supposed to, missing classes and sleeping all the time, which wasn’t good at all. In danger of losing it all and the hard work she had put in, Aeryn sought a meeting with her Instructors to discuss her future at the Academy. As much as she loved Botany, she was encouraged to try a different department, moving her major to a minor. Something that Aeryn was more than happy to do as she settled on Security. Perhaps not the obvious choice for someone of Aeryn’s nature but she didn’t care and soon found an affinity for hand to hand combat, handling weapons and everything that came with being a Security Officer. If she was to be asked why Security over anything else, she would simply answer that she was intrigued and fascinated by the more hands on approach that it offered.

Finding a new lease and thirst for life, Aeryn continued with her studies, honing her skills and strengthening her friendship with Thomas right until they reached graduation. Fortunately it was a friendship that endured despite being assigned to different ships.

First Assignment

USS Alexandria was Aeryn’s first assignment and of course there was that underlying fear of history repeating itself. A fear that proved to be unfounded as the new Midshipman found her feet and her confidence. Going so much as to make new friends, adopting a black cat named Whiskers and learning things she never thought possible. Being out in space was nothing like she could have ever imagined and seeing the reality of it all didn’t put her off either. Not that providing a protection detail for a Trill Ambassador was boring in the slightest, although some may disagree. Or the time when she was nearing the end of her first year on the Alexandria when the crew became infected by some alien parasite that had hitched a ride during a supply run.

That was to say the least an interesting time and one that Aeryn can now laugh about. Her actions during that bout of unpleasantness and stopping the Captain and several senior officers from being launched from the airlock earned Aeryn a promotion to Ensign. Sure she celebrated and yet didn’t let it go to her head so to speak.

Instead she knuckled down, offered to take on additional duties and shifts when required and began to make improvements through training and honing her skills. It was during this period that Aeryn had her first proper relationship with a fellow Ensign named Loren Merle, a Bajoran Tactical officer who transferred to Alexandria when the ship returned to Sol stopped at Starbase 893 to pick up additional personnel. Aeryn never knew love like it and fell for him hard, spending as much time with him as their duties allowed. A pivotal moment for the young officer as she realised that she was no longer the little girl dreaming of being a Botanist. This was only made better by a discussion with her DH, LCdr Steve Wilkins who saw her potential and encouraged her to do more, by giving her more responsibility.

When it came to her personal life, she did often think about what could be as her relationship progressed. That’s until the ship embarked on what should have been a routine patrol mission, which quickly turned into disaster when they encountered an anomaly that tore several holes in the hull and killed a third of the crew. Of course Aeryn didn’t know that she had lost the love of her life during that initial encounter until after the ship had managed to limp away.

Devastated and recovering from minor injuries that she had sustained, Aeryn was reminded of the grief that she had experienced when her own home had been threatened. But this was something more raw and deep, convinced she would never be whole again. Returning to Sol for repairs and being given extended shore leave, Aeryn didn’t know what to do with herself and found some solace by a chance reunion with Captain Amirez when the Einstein docked at Starbase Alpha. Being reunited with the man who had brought about and encouraged her throughout her application to the Academy and who she had kept in touch with, was another turning point for Aeryn.

The time that she got to spend with her mentor and role model was instrumental in helping Aeryn deal with her grief, giving her the strength to return to the ship once the repairs were complete. She would never forget Merle and with a renewed sense of life and confidence continued to do her best and a few months after received another promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Her experiences thus far had shaped and changed her, making her want to strive for every achievement that was presented to her. As far as missions went, they were pretty much the same, routine and run of the mill or so Aeryn thought. Perhaps that was what she wished for or maybe regretted thinking that way when Tranquility happened. Getting to visit a new planet or colony was always exciting, despite the inner turmoils that lurked from time to time. But Tranquility, a newly established colony was simply breathtaking; a place that was peaceful and just what the name suggested. Then raiders came, luring the USS Alexandria away by sending a false distress call from a nearby freighter. Death and destruction rained down on them as those on the surface tried to defend it and the civilian population. For the second time in her career Aeryn was given command of her own team. As scary as that prospect was, the security officer knew what she was capable of handling the responsibility.

She couldn’t fault those who were working alongside her, following her orders without question as they were redirected to help a small group of colonists who had become trapped in one of the farm buildings. A plan was made, weapons were set and Aeryn was confident that they could rescue the people before the Raiders destroyed the barn that they were in. They arrived to find that they were too late, as the barn burned before them. The flames etched in her eyes and memory forever. Though haunted by that image, the attack did turn in their favour as the ship returned with reinforcements and the remaining raiders were stopped.

Staying behind to help with the clean up and memorials, Aeryn had to deal with her emotions all over again but did not become embittered by what had happened. Justice prevailed and Aeryn received another promotion for her efforts. Now a full Lieutenant, Aeryn also made the decision to leave the ship that had been her home for so long and is looking forward to her new assignment and the change that it will hopefully bring.

Second Assignment

When Aeryn transferred to the Artemis, she didn't know what to expect and even wondered if she was going to like it. After being used to her previous ship for so long, the redhead knew that it would take some adjustment. Although she was determined to be social, to make friends and more importantly not let her past define her. The trauma and loss that she had experienced would never truly go away, but from the moment she met some of her new crew at a party that was being held to say farewell to the newly promoted Jenny Braggins, Aeryn realised that she had nothing to worry about.

From that moment, she worked closely with Commander Damian Coleman, especially when she took over from him as Acting Chief of Security. This particular promotion presented Aeryn with a challenge that she was only too willing to take on as a way to prove to herself that she could do it, and how everything had learned thus far would be instrumental in ensuring that she was successful. She found herself fortunate to have an excellent group of officers under her immediate command and yet there wouldn't be any slacking when it came to training or maintaining standards. Pushing herself to be the best she could be, while creating a balance between work and off duty time, culminating in forming friendships and finding her place amongst the crew.

Then came her first mission, without having to leave the system and that was to investigate a break in at Utopia Planitia. Top secret and sensitive information had been the target along with suspected Breen activity. The details of what happened and the outcome are now classified, although Aeryn certainly learned from it and suggested changes that could benefit everyone and not just a select couple of individuals. It also opened her eyes further to what could and can go wrong and if anything it made her stronger because of it.

She has also opened up to sharing more about her past, at both the crew christmas party and during some downtime spent with her friend Robin in the holodeck. This definitely has helped her become more of her true self and while she has yet to make her role more permanent, is confident that this will happen in the very near future.
