Personal History

Tsing Mao Wong was born on Earth in the city of Taipei. His father was a history teacher at a local college. His mother was the niece of a German scientist working in Taipei. After meeting at the college, they were married two years later. Their only child Tsing Mao was born in the third year of their marriage. At a young age the nickname ‘Mike’ was bestowed by a family friend and it stuck.

While on a family vacation to Mars, the shuttle the family was traveling on developed structural integrity problems on atmospheric entry. After crash landing, Mike was found to be the only survivor of the 63 beings aboard. His injuries were grievous. After spending months in a hospital, Mike was adopted by his only living relative, his father’s brother. Sho Gee Wong was a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and he took it upon himself to supervise his nephew’s continued recovery after his discharge from the hospital.

It was during this long and difficult recovery that an interest in medicine was sparked. However, the young Mike had no interest in the practices of his uncle, which he considered archaic and primitive. The young man instead poured his being into a mainstream education.

After graduating with honors from the Singapore University School of Medicine, Mike continued his training in general surgery and Xenomedicine.

Over time, he became a renowned surgeon with a thriving private practice and tenured professorships at several medical schools. His research was published in major Federation journals and he was awarded patents for a number of medical inventions.

After his uncle became ill and was discovered to be dying and beyond the help of modern medical practice, Mike learned that the man had been treating himself for years with his traditional medicine. The disease that was killing him had historically killed its victims in months. Mike realized finally what his uncle had been trying to teach him over the years was not outdated superstition to be looked down upon but rather something that had to power to do things undreamed up in mainstream medicine.

After his uncle’s death, Mike took some time off to reexamine his beliefs and direction of his life. His childhood fascination with exploration of the unknown resurfaced and he decided to scrap his private practice and apply to Star Fleet Academy.

The Academy at first was hesitant to admit someone of Mike’s age. However, some key administrators realized how valuable his experience could be in Star Fleet and he was finally admitted. He sailed through the academy and was assigned to the USS Dauntless on his graduation.

It was about this time that Mike was first visited by his dead uncle. At first feeling he must have been hallucinating, he refused to believe it was possible. However, with time and insight he came to accept, even welcome the visits. It seemed his uncle was determined to continue the lessons began so long ago, and Mike was now a willing student. His fascination with Tradition Chinese Medicine began to grow and it is now a major hobby of his, studied whenever he finds the time.

Adapting quickly to starship life, Mike rose through the ranks to become ACMO and then CMO and Second Officer of the Dauntless.

After a particularly harrowing mission that saw the apparent deaths of several senior crewmembers including his own after he had been forced to take the life of the possessed first officer, Mike and several others were miraculously brought back to life by a mysterious entity of unimaginable power.

This same entity caused genetic material to be combined between several senior members of the crew along with an unknown cosmic component. The resulting offspring, who were more beings of energy than flesh and blood, left lasting emotional and telepathic links among those involved. This was the first bond formed between Mike and then CTO K’Etana.

Shortly after this episode, during the investigation of the bizarre events involving the killing of the First Officer, Mike suffered somewhat of an emotional breakdown. Long suppressed feelings of guilt Mike harbored about the deaths of his parents and uncle along with every patient who had ever died under his care finally surfaced and drove his psyche deep within itself, to the point that his physical body would have died without intervention.

Help came from an unexpected quarter when his new friend Telsia Shikozu was visited by the image of Mike’s dead uncle. Telsia had been keeping a death vigil over Mike when he appeared and solicited her help in reaching his self-exiled psyche or “Chi” as the Chinese call it, and convincing Mike that he was not responsible for the deaths.

Mike was deeply grateful to Telsia for risking her life to save his and became fiercely loyal and protective of her. She became the closest friend he had had since childhood, but any romantic potential was out of the question because of her long-standing relationship with another crewmember. Telsia was directly responsible for saving Mike’s life on another occasion too and the gratitude he felt was immense. He accompanied her to the Trill home world for her joining to the Caer symbiont.

Telsia’s subsequent transfer to the Drake followed by her untimely death created a deep melancholy and new feelings of guilt within Mike. Meeting the new host of the Caer symbiont did make him feel somewhat better.

During their final mission on Dauntless, Mike was bound once agiain with K’Etana the minds of their away team were somehow integrated into the bodies of long dead aliens.

At the end of this mission, Mike was savagely attacked and left for dead by a crewmate who was still under alien control. Had K’Etana not found Mike and summoned help when she did, he without a doubt would not have survived.

After a regrettable incident on Star Base Alpha where Mike, still suffering from the effects of his injuries and subsequent treatment managed to break K’Etana out of the station brig where she had been wrongly imprisoned. However, the station authorities did not sympathize with the pair…

A small riot ensued when Mike and K’Etana were captured sitting at a restaurant. Fellow Dauntless crewmembers violently protested their arrest and many ended up in the brig. The dressing down from RAdm Thrawn that followed was unpleasant to say the least, but fortunately, no permanent damage was done to anyone’s career.

When the dust settled Mike had been remanded to the station hospital to complete his recovery and once certified fit for duty had returned just in time to see Thrawn relieved of command. Before the shock could dissipate, it was announced the Commodore was being promoted to Rear Admiral and given command of the newest incarnation of the USS Enterprise. K’Etana was promoted to Captain and remained as Thrawn’s First Officer and Mike to his surprise was promoted to Commander and named Second Officer. The remainder of Dauntless’ old crew was transferred to Enterprise as well and quickly set about learning the idiosyncrasies of their new ship.

Recently Mike has acknowledged that he has feelings and an interest in K’Etana that extend beyond the professional. Unsure of how to proceed and fearful of rejection and ruining the working relationship built over years of service together Mike keep his feelings to himself.

Finally when it seemed he and K’Etana along with their away team were about to be killed in a battle against renegade Klingon’s, Mike told her that he had feelings for her.

They survived the firefight and finally back onboard Enterprise she responded to his statement and to his immense relief Mike learned that she felt the same about him.

Unfortunatly, the relationship faultered when K’Etana was transferred to command her own ship at the onset of the Federation/Romulan War. She left without telling Mike she was going. He was devastated and blamed himself for somehow causing the separation.

Mike was promoted to First Officier of the Entperirse with K’Etana’s departure, he threw himself into the new challenge partly as a way to keep his emotions and lonilness buried out of mind.

K’Etana and Mike met again at the start of his last mission on Enterprise. Tasked with traveling to Q’uonos itself to negioate an alliance with the Klingon Empire Enterprise was escorted by Captain K’Etana’s ship. When the pair had time for a private conversation K’Etana revealed that she had gone without notice partly because she was afraid of how quickly their relationship was moving, and uncertanties of how it would fit in with her Star Fleet career aspirations. Given the circumstances the two again went their separate ways after the successful mission, parting this time as friends.

It was during the latter stages of this mission to Q’unos that Mike and Doctor ch’Thane became… involved.

Having discovered a bioengineered virus had infected a number of Klingons, Mike vowed to find a means of treating the infection. To this end he summoned Tara from Enterprise to help him with the urgent research and development of a treatment. Andorians were unfortunately susceptible to the infection unbeknownst to either and Tara soon became dangerously ill and even attacked Mike.

The infection prematurely set into motion certain biological processes within Tara’s body that were only temporally controllable with hormone manipulaton. Once back on Enterprise her condition worsened to the point that her life was in danger…

The only way under the circumstances to save Tara involed several days of… physical intamincy. Having forged a trust for Mike during their ordeal on Q’unos, Tara asked him to help her, and being the selfless and dedicated physician that he still was deep down inside – he could not refuse.

The result of the unprecedented coupling? Tara was saved, and the pair have formed a rudimentary mental bond that was demonstrated when Mike was attacked later on Starbase 24 and left for dead. Tara sensed his mind calling to hers and with the help of Doctor Marcos Dregs, saved Mike’s life.

The news of Mike’s transfer as Commanding Officier of the newly refit USS Dauntless came shortly after, and again Mike was separated from a woman he’d grown close too.

Vowing to stay in touch and hanging on to the hope that someday circumstance might allow for he and Tara to meet again, Mike left Enterprise and realized his ultimate career goal while once again finding himself emotionally isolated and alone among a sea of people…

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Exobiology
Academy Minor(s): Psychology, Command Preparation
Hobbies and Pastimes: Sailing, fishing, camping (especially in snow), cooking and the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Short-Term Goals: To adapt to his Commanding Officer position and earn the loyalty and respect of his crew. To help win the war for the Federation and be a part of restoring peace to the Alpha quadrant.
Long-Term Goals: To become the best Commanding Officer that he can be and to play a part in the exploration of the universe and the preservation of peace for the Federation
Personality: Mike is a quiet, reserved person normally, but lately he has more and more trouble controlling his temper. The pressures of command and the still fresh traumas of war haunt him daily. A rare socual drinker most of his adult life, Mike has been turning to alcohol with increasing frequency to help cope. Having drank to excess in very public venues and in fact intoxicated when Admiral Grans announced his promotion to Commodore, it may just be a matter of time before his career and perhaps life is adversely affected.
Sense of Humor: Mike shares the often gritty and vulgar sense of humor found in many medical professionals. Dealing with death and misery day in and day out force them to put of shields of sorts to protect their own sanity and joking about things others might find offensive is one such defense mechanism. During school Mike was responsible for many famous and elaborate pranks
Phobias: Transporters. In the beginning Mike had found himself terrified of transporters despite knowing how safe they are there is something about the process of having his molecules disassembled and shot through space that makes him uneasy. Over the years his distrust of transporters has lessened somewhat. But given the choice he would still prefer other means of travel when the situation allows
Likes: Personal time spent in meditation and Tai Chi practice. Reading, listening to classical music. Any time he can spend in the company of Captain K’Etana. The company of animals and nature in general
Dislikes: Politics, Mike tries to be straightforward in his professional and personal dealings. He does not like duplicitous people or those in whom ambition has overcome their sense of decency and compassion
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who take life for granted. Mike has seen an untold number of untimely deaths. Moreover, it sickens him to see anyone unhappy with their lives not trying to change them for the better. As aware as he is of the finite nature of life, he is loath to lose a life
Bad Habits or Vices: Mike will sometimes go for days without rest when working on a difficult case, or during a crisis. He pushes himself beyond the point of exhaustion and then takes days to recover. He does on occasion indulge in alcohol and on occasion will gamble on anything from a poker game to various types of racing
Achievements: Graduate of Singapore University School of Medicine. Residency and Fellowship trained in surgery and Xenomedicine. Board Certified in General Surgery and Xenomedicine. Tenured professor of clinical medicine and surgery at multiple medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals. Published author of numerous articles in medical research journals. Holder or numerous patents for medical equipment and surgical procedures. Assigned as Commanding Officer, USS Dauntless. Promoted to Commodore.

Graduate of Star Fleet Academy. Served as medical officer then ACMO, CMO and Second Officer of USS Dauntless. Currently holds the rank of Commander and assigned as CMO and Second Officer, USS Enterprise
Disappointments: Not knowing his parents better. Not listening to his uncle’s teachings during his life. Feeling along in the universe.
Illnesses: Usual human childhood diseases. Heavy scarring from injuries, extensive repair to lungs has left Mike very sensitive to smoke/air pollution
Strengths: Very strong will professionally and personally. Devotes his heart and soul to his job, even to the point of endangering his own well being. At the same time Mike is a most humble person shying away from fanfare and accolades he is happy to do his job to the best of his ability and being able to help his patients overcome illness and injury to return to their normal lives is reward enough for him. Since becoming a commanding officer his attachment to his duty is much the same, his protectiveness towards his crew and ship has multiplied his stress exponentially taxing his coping mechanisms to the limit.
Weaknesses: Has a very hard time accepting the death of one of his patients. Hesitant to give up even when he knows there is no chance of saving someone. Feels as though he is letting the patient down just as he feels he did his parents and uncle by being unable to save them. Mike is fiercely protective of his crew and agonizes over ordering others into harms way.
Fears: Becoming useless, a burden to others. Of making a mistake that could cost someone his or her life
Prejudices: orMike cannot stand arrogance in anyone. Incompetence is also something he will not suffer. Also, tattoos of unicorns have been known to send him into a rage.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Soft cotton clothing in earthy colors
Distinguishing Features: Numerous areas of scarring and weathered looking skin from burns suffered as a child. Mike declines to have cosmetic surgery, wants the scars to remind him of the fine line that can separate life from death
Pets: None currently. Growing up Mike had several typical Earth pets. He has an uncanny ability to connect with most animals and enjoys their company greatly
Friends: Mike made very few close friends growing up. Those few he did he’s lost contact with over the years. In his adult life there have been many professional acquaintances he’s considered friends, but nothing intimate or close until his graduation from Star Fleet Academy. He considere Admiral Thrawn whom he served under for five years his primary mentor and a good friend. However since leaving Enterprise for his own command Mike has become socially withdrawn and lacks anyone whom could be considered a really close friend.

As far as intimate relationships, Mike and Captain K’Etana seemed to be forming a close bond when she was suddenly transferred to her own command and left without a word to Mike.

During his last mission on Enterprise a rather unique circumstance forged a relationship between Mike and Doctor Tara ch’Thane a young Andorian officer. This relationship was also marred by an unexpected transfer as Mike was soon sent off to Command of the USS Dauntless, coincidentally the first ship he had been assigned to out of the academy.

Tara and Mike did meet again and embarked on what was to have been a shore leave adventure that turned into something of a horror story.

Believed to have been accidentally killed shortly after their rescue, sh'Thane was resurrected and transported to Star Base Alpha after Dauntless encountered beings of immense power calling themselves the 'Great Ones' during a supply mission to Gamma-7.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The death of his parents and 61 others in a shuttle accident on Mars when he was ten years old. Mike was the lone survivor, he suffered horrible injures that required months of hospitalization and therapy followed by a long recuperation under the care of his uncle
Best Time: Mike’s early childhood memories are among his happiest. Traveling with his parents and learning all he could about Earth and the other know worlds. Learning to sail his own small boat, fishing, camping and most outdoor activities were also enjoyed
Most Crucial Experience: The realization that he was not personally responsible for the deaths of his parents, uncle and patients over the years. Then with the help of his uncle’s post humus visits Mike has realized that death is not necessarily the end of human existence. A die hard scientist all of his life Mike was never impressed by things that could not be quantified, his philosophy has since broadened and he now accepts the fact that there are many things in the universe not yet understood. His new willingness to open his mind to the scientifically abstract has changed his outlook on life… and death
Role Model: Early on his parents. They were from very different backgrounds and their ability to embrace their differences and instill their curiosity and love of life impressed Mike deeply.

Then his uncle, who tried to teach Mike the importance of keeping an open mind to the multitude of possibilities the universe presents. Largely ignored in life, the now deceased Soh Gee Wong has had some success opening his nephew’s eyes.

And most recently Rear Admiral Thrawn, Mike’s Commanding Officer since his first posting out of the academy. His command style and skills as both a warrior and diplomat have impressed Mike to the point that he has recently become determined to one day pursue a command position himself. Thrawn’s patience and guidance over the years helped Mike to develop into a competent Star Fleet Officer and Mike is completely loyal to Thrawn, K’Etana and his Enterprise crewmates. Since assuming his own command Mike has become more appreciative of his Department Hears and their expertise and guidance in making difficult decisions.
