Personal History

Before Kylara was born, her grandfather was a conjoined Trill who met, and fell in love with, a Human female in Star Fleet. They had a brief affair before the host died, and the sybiote had to be transplanted. Due to the rules about reassociation, Kylara’s grandmother was not allowed to have a relationship with the new host, and had to raise Kylara’s mother alone. They were later transferred back to Earth, where Kylara’s mother met her father, while serving as a nurse at the Star Fleet Naval Yards orbiting Luna. When their tours ended, they both settled down on Luna together and started a family.

Kylara’s father was born and raised in Japan, and Kylara spent quite a bit of time visiting her paternal grandparents there. She is fluent in both English and Japanese, though she mostly uses English. She practices many customs that are Japanese, but is able to switch to more Western styles on the fly. She also uses the traditional forms of address for people, like her grandmother taught her.

Her Irish name comes from a long, long time ago after the Second World War, when an American Officer stationed in Japan started a family there. Through subsequent generations, the Irish name remained within the family despite eventually becoming almost completely Japanese again.

Kylara was born on Luna, Earth’s natural satellite, on the shores of Lake Armstrong. Her parents frequented Earth often and carried young Kylara along, where she spent much time learning the peculiar differences that occurred when two human populations were isolated. While they were still humans, often individual cultures developed. Kylara later wrote a paper on this, which drew the attention of a recruiting officer from Star Fleet, who prompted her to join.

Kylara worked hard in Star Fleet Academy, earning her a position on one of the fleet’s hospital ships, the USS Edward Jenner. There she worked to finish up her Doctorate.

Kylara chose to transfer from the USS Edward Jenner, one of the fleet’s hospital ships, to the normal fleet for several reasons. One of those reasons was that the hospital ships were mostly assigned to small worlds where advanced medical care had yet to become wide spread, or tended to get posted to warzones patching up the wounded and dying. Kylara wasn’t eager to work on soldiers, whose rough attitudes and demeanors rubbed her the wrong way. She also didn’t like how they treated her, often as a little girl instead of a woman.

Kylara also had a problem with the ship’s CMO, who had made several advances on her early upon her arrival. When she refused this, he made life difficult for her by making her do all the duties left to others, changing the names on her reports, and making her look like a fool. She collected evidence of his activities, and then reported it to the Captain. While this got a new CMO, the staff resented her for going around the CMO, who they believed to be senior to the Captain.

So after getting her doctorate, she transferred to the first available opening in the fleet, which was aboard the USS Gettysburg, in route to Earth for refit and repair. She spent a brief stint there, before being transferred to the Chief Medical Officer's billet on the USS Sheridan, where she serves currently.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Last scenario at the Academy, when you were put in the no-win scenario, which is very likely with doctors. When unable to save any of her patients despite working her little ass off, she got really depressed
Best Time: The time she went "Crater Surfing" on the moon. Freefall from lunar orbit and riding essentially a giant rocket and try to control it. Safety features keep it safe but there are always accidents
Most Crucial Experience: Aboard the Edward Jenner, when she had to give someone a black tag in triage, condemning them to death, because they had so many holes you could teach about internal anatomy with them
Role Model: Beverly Crusher
