Personal History

Eliya was born a small trading outpost that received a great deal of business from nearby mining colonies. Her conception was a product of extensive fertility and genetic treatments, and the first two years of her life were marred by fears that she might have complications emerge due to her unique ancestry.

Her mother, a Human, owned a shop on the outpost and was quite the successful entrepreneur. Her father, who’s name she doesn’t know nor does she particularly care to know, was a trader that spent most of his time away from the trading outpost and his mate. It was of little shock when he disappeared for good, as many traders do, when Eliya was about 2. Her mother never spoke of him after that, which is why she knows so little about him.

When she was 3, her mother became involved with a rather xenophobic human, Kevin, who her mother hastily married after becoming pregnant. Eliya believes that her mother was exceptionally afraid of raising a second child on her own, but often resents her mother for placing such a young child of mixed heritage into the hands of such a cruel man. She bears no physical scars, but even at such a young age, she has memories of the abuse.

Her mother died in childbirth a short time later, and while Eliya’s half-sister survived, the death of her mother changed everything. Kevin had no interest in something he considered to be a “freak of nature”, and it was probably a miracle that he didn’t kill the four year old or sell her into slavery. Instead, he abandoned her on the loading docks of the outpost, and as many children did, she wandered around lost and confused before finding a small place to hide in.

Her hiding place ended up being in the loading area of a supply ship headed for the mining colony, Crius III. She wasn’t discovered until the vessel reached its destination, and the mine workers had no idea what to do with a small child. She was taken in by the shift manager, Jonah Phillips, and his wife, who treated her like their own child.

Her life on Crius III seemed to be a good one, and she flourished in a loving environment.

When she was about 13, unrest developed on Crius III. Because it was an economy based primarily on the mining operations, the discovery that many of the resources being mined were becoming scarce sent waves of panic through the people. While the mining companies managed to keep a tense peace among the people, it didn’t last long, and developed into violent riots after only 6 months. Her father was killed trying to keep the rioters from attacking the administrative staff of his respective company, and while at school was separated from her mother and siblings, who lived on the other side of the colony. Her school was evacuated, and most of the children were sent to outpost a lightyear away.

Much of what happened to her after being evacuated from Crius III is unknown as Eliya refuses to discuss her past and official records in the region are kept less than meticulously. It is assumed that she was never claimed after being evacuated and escaped from government care as the next recorded incident regarding the girl occurred 2 months later and involved her being caught by the crew of the freighter “Veralyte” as she attempted to steal from them for the 5th time in 3 days.

Official records show that from that point until she was 20 she was listed as a member of the Veralyte’s crew – first as kitchen staff and then as the helmsman. How that transition took place is not public knowledge, but if one dug into unofficial sources, they find that she was also rumored to have taken part in negotiations on behalf of the Veralyte starting at about age 16. It’s rather unclear what her part in the proceeding were, but it would explain how she developed her abilities of persuasion.

At the age of 20, Eliya applied to and was accepted by Star Fleet Academy, which allowed her to leave the freighter business behind her for good.

While she chose tactical because her skills were in piloting, she quickly understood that it was also the best field for her to rise to the high positions she desired. She actually would have preferred to deal with tactics or even ship’s weaponry, but her past dictated the positions she would hold. She spent much of the war with the Romulans as a combat shuttle pilot, and while she enjoyed the adrenaline of the situations, the narrow focus of the job annoyed her at times.

She rose quickly through the ranks, hitting CTO at Lt [JG] briefly before being transferred to the USS James Madison as their temporary First Officer, as far as she knew, and their helmsman.
