Personal History

Tim was born and raised on Proxima. His family was never close – his parents were

both career Starfleet officers and split up very early in his life, both returning to active duty on separate ships and content to leave their son in the care of family. He spent most of his childhood with his paternal grandparents and they were keen to make sure he was strong enough to follow his parents into Starfleet.

Engines and computers replaced people for much of Tim’s life. He was always tinkering with both, looking at ways to make them more efficient, faster and better, applying things he saw from other projects to his own. Given his family and strong academics there was no doubt he was heading into Starfleet, but he wavered between Engineering and Science right up until the day of admission.

Ultimately Tim enrolled as a Science officer, drawn by the opportunities to improve what already exists rather than maintain. He has little interest in the ‘life’ sciences and instead majored in the more technical aspects of the field.

On graduation he spent some time working with Starfleet R&D, having impressed the director at an open day with his knowledge and understanding of cutting-edge deflector technologies. For all his keenness and obvious intellect, he wasn’t actually very good as a lab worker because he preferred having something practical to build from.

Where Tim turned out to be exceptional was in the application of the advances made by R&D. His understanding of major systems allowed him to see the benefits and detriments to any new developments, and make any tweaks that became necessary.

He signed on as a Development Application Specialist, one of the corps of scientists that accompanies new equipment and modifications on field tests to monitor performance. Whilst it’s a very nomadic lifestyle, moving from ship to ship and fleet to fleet depending on availability of vessels, Tim feels like a round peg in a round hole. He learnt to strike up relationships quickly thanks to his upbringing so has very few problems fitting in with crews, and he has the satisfaction of knowing that what he does makes a very real difference.

His latest assignment is the USS Chin’toka, working on the refit of the vessel and then staying with the ship at least for its initial mission or two to ensure that the updated systems function as advertised. It’ll mean a stay of several months at least, but Tim is looking forward to sticking around for once.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Applied Astrophysics, Starship Systems and Design, Advanced Computer Control.
Academy Minor(s): Astronavigation, Warp Field Theory.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Always tinkering with something. As a way of ‘fitting in’ with new crews has

developed an uncanny knack for tracing and fixing lingering issues that had evaded Starbase technicians.
Short-Term Goals: Fit in with the Chin’toka crew and become a part of the crew.
Long-Term Goals: Genuinely so happy doing what he does now that he only wishes to keep doing it.
Personality: Forthright and direct, without being abrupt and rude in the name of brevity.
Sense of Humor: Dark and somewhat warped to put it mildly. His idea of a joke is usually outrageously offensive to someone somewhere.
Phobias: None.
Likes: Off duty, nothing makes him happier than rock music, steaks the size of the plate and plenty of beer.
Dislikes: Being kept at arm’s reach by officers who either don’t understand his role fully or are suspicious that he’s up to something else.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Red tape – if something works better and has been tested, Tim firmly believes it should start rolling out rather than get caught up in approvals and schedules.
Bad Habits or Vices: Not shy about getting involved in other issues on board ship – has been accused of interfering in the past, and in fairness rightly so.
Achievements: Being good enough to have served his entire career to date within the notoriously selective Research and Development function.
Disappointments: Not actually having a place to call home, no lasting bonds with friends or family.
Illnesses: None.
Strengths: Analytical mindset, quick-witted, adaptable, quick learner and socially adept.
Weaknesses: Not knowing when to shut up, gets very agitated when forced out of his comfort zone.
Fears: Being sidelined into some kind of leadership role that takes him away from the ships he so loves.
Prejudices: Can be too quick to judge based on stereotypes.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans and t-shirts – completely uninterested in fashion of any kind.
Pets: None.
Friends: Had a lot of childhood friends but drifted apart from most of them on joining Starfleet. Given his roving role moving from ship to ship, building longer-term friendships has proven difficult.
