Personal History

Henry Marshall was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on Earth to Richard and Cleon Marshall on November 1st. Henry and his siblings grew up on their family’s ancestral farm. Though Henry’s immediate family didn’t work the fields, his father managed the farm and provided work for farmers and horticulturalists.

As a child, Henry took piano and voice lessons (in large part to please his mother), but eventually quit the piano because he “never got the fingering right”, but he did continue his voice lessons eventually becoming an adept tenor singer. He also took up painting while in primary school and continues the practice to this day, though it is a very private practice. Henry received spectacular marks in school and was often described as more capable than his peers and impressed nearly everyone he met; however, he was never very engaged as a student. Often listless and bored during class, he daydreamed about brave adventures and being a fearless explorer of the unknown. His classroom meandering came to end during a class trip to Starfleet headquarters when he was twelve. The visit provided tales that satisfied his young sense of adventure and provided a needed outlet for his very active imagination. Even at his young age, Henry knew he found his life’s calling. He became obsessed with space travel and became an ardent admirer of the famous Captain Jean-Luc Picard, finding many parallels between his and Picard’s life. Henry dreamed of becoming a Starfleet captain himself one day, just like Captain Picard. He returned from the trip with a newfound focus and his attitude changed almost over night. He became a star student, going on to become student body president, valedictorian, an active member of the chess club and a champion athlete in squash, cross-country, and wrestling. During all of this he had one sole motivation: earning admittance to Starfleet Academy.

There were some sadder parts of his childhood; one in particular involved his friend Paul Whitmore. Paul and Henry, friends since early childhood, enjoyed mountain climbing together. On one fateful trip, the two attempted to climb a difficult rock face, one well beyond their abilities. Paul was adamant they should avoid the climb, but Henry, never one to back away from a challenge, persisted on the issue until Paul submitted. The climb proved disastrous. About half way up the mountain, Paul lost his footing and fell pulling Henry down with him. Henry landed on top of Paul who was positioned on some errant rocks. The collision resulted in crushing segments of Paul’s spine leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Normally, a full recovery from such an injury was possible; however, due to Henry breaking one his legs and their communicators being crushed in the fall, Henry, fearing for his friend, erroneously dragged Paul to safety while he searched for help. This action worsened Paul’s injury, so much so that repairing Paul’s spine was impossible. Henry blamed himself not only for the initial injury, but also for his foolhardy behavior. If he had waited for help there was a good chance Paul would have recovered. As a result of the incident, Henry grew to feel his knee-jerk responses should be ignored as much as possible reasoning they would lead to erroneous behavior that would lead to disaster. Also, due to his guilt, he developed a sense of responsibility to live an honorable and valuable life, one that would compensate for what he robbed from Paul. Another, much less somber, example of childhood strife, came from a family vacation where Henry tried some ill prepared gagh. As a result, he contracted a serious stomach illness and only recovered after a lengthy recovery time. He has been a very picky eater ever sense.

Henry’s dedication continued throughout his primary education. By the time he reached his final year, it was no secret he wished to attend Starfleet Academy, something that caused some trouble at home. While always supportive, Henry’s father had always hoped his children would take over his engineering firm once he retired. When he learned Henry was planned to attend Starfleet Academy, He was disappointed and angry. He actively tried to convince Henry to remain in New Hampshire and take over the family business with no success. The issue didn’t get much better once Henry’s oldest sister, Sam, also left to attend Starfleet Academy, an occurrence Henry’s father blamed solely on Henry. While the two maintain a close relationship, the family business has become a constant point of animosity that is slowly driving the two apart.

Despite the protests from his father, Henry applied to Starfleet academy. Shortly before he finished primary school, Henry developed a true interest in command and felt the bridge was where the real decisions were made, so he sought admission as a tactical cadet. He was excited to learn he had earned a spot at the Academy and became a Starfleet Cadet with great zeal.

Despite his life long admiration for Starfleet and initial excitement, Henry’s time at the Academy was not what he expected. He approached his studies at the Academy with a devout dedication and maturity rarely found among cadets. He appeared to have a true knack for military strategy and found working as a navigator invigorating, so he focused his attention on those areas of study. In addition, he experienced continued athletic success, this time on the Academy’s squash and swim teams. He also discovered a fondness for different forms of martial arts with Krav Maga and Jeet Kune Do being his favorites. However, he was often homesick and never felt comfortable in San Francisco. Not use to being surrounded by so many distinguished people or having so many accomplished peers, Henry felt he got into Starfleet by sheer luck or sympathy, and was one mistake away from being sent home. This fostered a perfectionist attitude that only furthered his devotion.

The only person he confided these feelings in was his childhood friend Paul who was also a student at the academy. Had Paul not provided Henry the comfort and comradely he lacked, it’s likely he would have left the Academy. Though Henry was very uncomfortable at the academy, he had little trouble making friends and was something of a social animal on campus. It was rare to find someone who didn’t know Henry.

As graduation approached and Henry pondered his first assignment, but felt a bit empty in purpose. Up to this point in his life, attending Starfleet Academy was the driving purpose in his life. Now, with that dream lived, he was trying to find a new goal for his life. He remembered his childhood hero: Captain Picard and decided his next goal would be to achieve his other childhood dream of becoming the Captain of a Federation Starship. With his new goal in mind, Henry looked forward to his upcoming deployment.
