Mark Twain, circa 1907

Samuel Clemens was born on November 30‚ 1835. His uncle owned several enslaved people, and Sam spent many boyhood summers on his Uncle's farm, playing in the enslaved people’s quarters‚ listening to tall tales that he would enjoy throughout his life. When he was 11‚ his father died, and he left school to work as a printer’s apprentice for a local newspaper. At 18‚ he left for New York City and Philadelphia‚ and worked on several different newspapers, finding some success at writing articles.

By 1857‚ he returned home to start a new career as a riverboat pilot, but when the Civil War happened in 1861‚ all traffic along the river came to a halt. In search of a new career‚ Mr. Clemens headed for the state of Nevada, encountering Native American tribes for the first time, along with a variety of unique characters‚ mishaps, and disappointments. These events would later find a way into his short stories and books. He began writing for a Nevada newspaper where he used‚ for the first time‚ his pen name‚ "Mark Twain." By 1864, the man headed for San Francisco, California, where he continued to write for local papers. His writings became so popular that he embarked upon his first lecture tour‚ which also established him as a successful stage performer. He married in 1870, settling in Buffalo‚ New York‚ where Sam had become a partner‚ editor, and writer for the daily newspaper

In American history, he is well-known for his novel "The Innocents Abroad" (1869), "Roughing It" (1872), "Life on the Mississippi" (1883), "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876), and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1885). He is also noted for his fashion choice of wearing white suits: in photographs and illustrations, he is often depicted in white suits, with evidence suggesting he began wearing white suits while on the lecture circuit, after the death of his wife in 1904. The wearing of white suits became his trademark.

Twain on board the Enterprise, circa 2369

When Lieutenant Commander Data found himself thrown back in time in 1893, it was as a result of time-travel interference from the inhabitants of Devidia II. Though the android officer tried his best to ingrain himself into society and blend in, Mr. Clemens knew something was up, and investigated Data. The crew of the USS Enterprise has at this point tracked Data to his place and time to San Francisco, where they are tricked into beaming the writer onto the starship, back in the year 2369. With Captain Picard trapped in the 19th Century, Clemens/Twain offers himself up to the risky plan of trading places with the man.

After the Devidian time rift allowed the writer to go back, and the Captain to come forward, the Enterprise destroyed it in order to keep the aliens from harming the 19th Century humans any longer.
