Article of the Week

A member of the Dream species

The "dream species" are a species found in the Delta Quadrant. They are humanoid with prominent head ridges and orange skin.

Although they are corporeal, they use technology to exist in a collective dream state. They broadcast this collective dream into the surrounding space and used it to trap starship crews in a shared dream. The crews then eventually perished as their bodies lacked consumption of food and water. This seemed to be a defensive measure although it may have been a method of attack. It is also unknown if this species operated real starships, because any seen in the dream state may have been illusionary.

The USS Gettysburg was named for The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. Fought at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the Eastern Theater of the War, the battle raged from July 1st through 3rd, 1863. Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania for both strategic and logistical reasons, in this campaign, which he hoped would end the War. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, approximately 75,000 men, encountered the Union Army of the Potomac, approximately 90,000 strong, under Major General George G. Meade on the outskirts of Gettysburg on July 1st. In a battle of considerable movement, Advance forces of Lee’s Army (Lt. General A.P. Hill’s and Lt. General Richard S. Ewell’s Corps) tested first the Union right (July 1st), engaging Union Cavalry and Infantry under Brigadier General John Buford, Major General John F. Reynolds (1st Corps), and Major General Oliver Howard (11th Corps). Then, in an assault led by Lt. General James Longstreet’s Second Corp (Major General John B. Hood's and Major General Lafayette McLaw's Divisions), the Union left (July 2nd). While some area's, such as the Peach Orchard were taken, this attacks main focus, on the Union Held High Ground, including Little Round Top, was repulsed by forces such as Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain's Maine Regiment. On July 3rd, Major General George E. Pickett (along with Major General Isaac R. Trimble and Brigadier General J. Johnston Pettigrew, of A.P. Hill's Corps) led perhaps the most famous charge in American military history against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. Only 5,000 of this original force of 15,000 survived the repulse. This Three-day struggle is considered the turning point in the Eastern Theater of the War.

Philly logo.jpg

The USS Philadelphia is named for the largest city in Pennsylvania, situated in south-eastern region of the State, on the west bank of the Delaware River. The Schuylkill River flows through Philadelphia and The city is about 160 km north of the point where the Delaware River empties into Delaware Bay. Philadelphia gets its name from two Greek words meaning "city of brotherly love."

Few cities in the North American Land Mass are more imbued with early U.S. (The United States of America, Unifying Organization in this Region, Predating Star Fleet by Roughly 400 Years, No longer in Existence after New Earth Government Established in the late 21st Century) history than Philadelphia. It was founded in 1681 by William Penn, an English Quaker, who planned it as the center of his ambitious colonizing scheme for what would become the state of Pennsylvania. The town quickly prospered, thanks to peace treaties Penn signed with the Delaware Indians that permitted the Quakers (and other religious dissenters) to settle the area.

The USS Intrepid, CA-1708 is a Avenger-class heavy cruiser, was assigned to the 1st Fleet. Launched on Stardate 20208.19 under the command of Captain Michael Drake, Intrepid was quickly moved from her originally intended assignment with the 1st Fleet to operate under Star Fleet Intelligence. After several years of covert operations, Intrepid was transferred back to regular fleet operations with the 1st Battle Group and, after a subsequent reorganization, the 1st Fleet. Under the command of Captain Jeremy Phillips, Intrepid saw regular action as part of her assignment to Battle Group Alpha-1 including front line engagement during the Terran Empire/Grath crisis. Disabled during her encounter with the Grath, Intrepid underwent an extensive refit before returning to active duty. With the loss of Space Station Sierra-18 and the Bajoran System, Intrepid was recalled to Earth and transitioned to Independent Operations within the 1st Fleet. This development would also see the assignment of a new crew and the vessels third commanding officer, Captain Gabriel Archer.
