Personal History

Born in the infirmary of space station Starbase Charlie, Bryan’s parents run one of the few long-haul freighters left in existence. Bryan was raised on starship life from an early age. His parents were owner/operators on the bulk hauler Wayfarer which specialized in the transshipment of exotic goods. The crew was small enough to the point where it was an extended family, and with Bryan as the only child aboard he got to have plenty of parents involved in his rearing. By the time he was ten, he was already learning to fly the ship. By fourteen, he was rated on their sole cargo shuttle.

His parents thoroughly enjoyed their trade - while they were regulars on the Denobula-Bajor run (Starbase Charlie always had something of value for a tramp freighter dealing in exotics), they did branch out, seeking out new ports of call about every fourth run. Bryan inherited their sense of curiosity and desire to see the universe at large, but he didn’t think that a freighter was the best place to do that. No, his interests lay elsewhere, and he wanted to find a way to get out of that life and explore and learn.

Instead, he took as many correspondence math and hard science courses as he could during his free time starting at age ten. Given that he wasn’t coming from a traditional education system, the entrance exam for Starfleet Academy posed a serious challenge when he took it. Passing by the skin of his teeth, he then entered the ‘crunch’ as the Academy Admissions Board called it, where he was one of many candidates that had a good record but nothing that really stood out, and would be stacked and restacked until the Academy class was full. His acceptance notice came out of the final crunch, which left him plenty of time to stew about it until the last moment.

His parents were none too pleased with his decision. Jackson in particular had hoped that the extra time Bryan had spent on the bridge was indicative that he was angling to remain on the Wayfarer, not that he was trying to get a taste for what was ahead of him. Bryan grudgingly parted ways with his family on not great terms when they pulled into Starbase Alpha and started at the Academy.

His Freshman year, Bryan entered Starfleet Academy on the Science track, with a specialty as a physicist. His coursework was accordingly front-loaded with heavy Science coursework, although he took the mandatory introductory classes in all other subjects. It was in Tactics 101 that Bryan found something out: he genuinely liked that one field that was unique to Starfleet in combat tactics. He’d always liked flying - as evidenced by the young age he started - and had always displayed impressive situational awareness for his age. That translated directly into a mind suited to serve as a Tactical officer, and his instructors pushed aggressively to get him off the Science track and into the Tactical track.

Mulling things over his Sophomore year, Bryan took enough classes from both his initial Science track and the Tactical track to keep his options open while he struggled with the decision. In the end, though, with the Krynar War looming, and the fact that he could still maintain his minor and love of astrophysics while training in a badly-needed specialty. Bryan declared for the Tactical track starting with his Junior year, allocating all of his remaining elective slots for Science. He graduated from the Academy with good but unremarkable scores, the only thing staying with him was his nickname of ‘Mac’ that CDR Pollard, one of his senior Tactical instructors, tagged him with. He managed to make up with his parents during leave just before his Senior year.

Bryan was somewhat disappointed out of the gate - he’d hoped to be assigned to one of the Fleet’s light cruisers or exploration ships. Instead, he drew USS Oceanus, a frigate converted for police duties, assigned to Second Fleet’s 202nd Police Flotilla. the only saving grace was that one of his closest friends from the Academy, Phil Waters, had also drawn the Oceanus as a junior Science officer, and Bryan did look forward to the challenge of a smaller crew that mirrored the Wayfarer’s compliment.

On the Oceanus, Bryan completed his time as a Midshipman during a number of patrols along the Romulan Neutral Zone, interdicting a number of smugglers along the way, not involved in the overall war against the Krynar. He was quickly taken under the wing of the ship’s Chief Tactical Officer, an Andorian named Shr’apana. The older officer was impressed by Bryan’s piloting skill and tactical knowledge, and helped push the young Midshipman. Bryan made Ensign early on the strength of the name he’d made for himself as a pilot and quickly took over as the ship’s leading Helmsman. By then, though, the conflict with the Krynar had reached its crescendo, and the entire 202nd was emergency-recalled to Sol.

While the Krynar thankfully left Sol without firing a shot, the 202nd was tapped as part of the massive battle force that would take the fight to the Krynar over Tellar. The 202nd fought hard at Tellar, surviving mostly intact, and was assigned to support the invasion of Krynar space. The 202nd was left in the rear, providing defense and overwatch as the SFCE built the transwarp gate for the Fleet’s return to Sol. That gate drew attackers like a moth to the flame, and the Oceanus bore the brunt of a strike mission by Enlightened Tellarite Defense Force fighters. Despite the best efforts of the ship and crew, there were simply overwhelmed by the number of attackers and firing vectors. Bryan had been on the helm, and he went above and beyond in that capacity, keeping them in the fight far longer than they had any business. USS Yeager had noticed that Oceanus was in deep trouble and had come alongside to evacuate the crew. Bryan remained at the helm, maneuvering wildly to buy time while simultaneously building in a non-standard series of evasive maneuvers to the autopilot so that once he was evacuated, the ship would survive a little longer, hopefully saving more lives.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Starship Tactics
Academy Minor(s): Astrophysics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Bryan has been flying starships, albeit transports, since he was a kid, and enjoys stunt flying in a stripped-down shuttlecraft. He also plays a mean game of poker.
Short-Term Goals: Still dealing with his best friend’s death at the hands of the Krynar, Bryan just hopes to keep going and manage to not screw up on the Yeager as he does some soul searching.
Long-Term Goals: Bryan isn’t really thinking long-term at the moment. Dealing with his closest friend of 6 years death comes at the top of the list, followed by trying to keep his career prospects good as he climbs the ladder in Starfleet.
Personality: On the job, Bryan displays confidence bordering on arrogance - he is completely sure of himself in almost all aspects of being a Tactical Officer, with particular respect to starship tactics and systems. This carries over to when he trains other officers - on the Oceanus almost all the junior officers looked to him when they wanted a peer-level tac trainer while he was still an Ensign. Outside of his job and a poker table, though, he is actually fairly reserved and shy, a trait that has increased lately.
Sense of Humor: Mack’s sense of humor is desert-dry.
Phobias: Mack is still apprehensive about public speaking to larger groups - in front of friends and small groups he’s fine though.
Likes: Poker, beer, 20th Century pop culture, flying, physics.
Dislikes: Martial Arts/Exercise, the freighter life.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: None in particular.
Bad Habits or Vices: Doesn’t like physical exercise to the point where he only maintains the minimum standards for fitness in Starfleet.
Achievements: At the Battle of Tellar, was on the Helm of the Oceanus and managed to program a series of erratic evasives while dodging hostile fire that bought enough time for some of the crew to evacuate before the ship was destroyed.
Disappointments: Despite the praise and request from CDR Parker to join him on the Yeager, Mack still believes that if he’d been better, more of the Oceanus’s crew would still be alive, including his best friend Phil.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Mack is a hot hand at the controls of a starship and has truly outstanding situational awareness, giving him an advantage flying and at Tactical. Strong analytic mind and outstanding memory.
Weaknesses: He has a tendency to coast when not prodded to keep working at his best. Zero skill or aptitude in personal combat - hand to hand and armed.
Fears: Until recently, suffering Krynar Enlightenment. Now, losing friends.
Prejudices: Hated the Krynar with a passion. Dislikes Cardassians from a history of… ‘overzealous’ enforcement on the borders of their space while still on his parents transport, stemming from a few incidents where they tried to illegally confiscate their cargo.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Mack dresses in simple, comfortable clothes most of the time - he hasn’t had a whole lot of time where anything fancy was needed.
Distinguishing Features: Mac lacks any true distinguishing featurs.
Friends: ENS Phil Waters, an Academy classmate of his who was assigned to the Oceanus with him. KIA at the Battle of Tellar; leaving Mack with no truly close friends.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The Battle of Tellar, where he was one of only 13 survivors from a crew of 70, which he’d come to regard as a second family.
Best Time: On leave before his Senior year at the Academy, when he reconciled his decision to join Starfleet with his parents and spent a week on the beaches of Hawaii with them while the Wayfarer was docked at Starbase Alpha
Most Crucial Experience: The decision to abandon his studies of science and join Starfleet Tactical right before his Junior year. Bryan was pulled in by CDR Pollard of Tactical and CDR Torak of Science to have a serious discussion of his future, and the results of that would shape his nascent career.
Role Model: Lieutenant Shr’apana, Chief Tactical Officer on the USS Oceanus, KIA at the Battle of Tellar.
