Personal History

Ialanto is an unusual case for a Selkie. While most Selkies of a similar age are still at the height of their reproductive prime and focused on creating offspring on their home-world of Pacifica, Lan is already 2 years into what appears to be a promising career as a Star Fleet medical officer. The reason for this is not a happy one. For reasons still unknown to the medical community on Pacifica, Ialanto is part of a small number of Pacifican children who are born sterile. As a result, Ialanto was free to leave Pacifica at an early age and pursue a career instead of following tradition and "sowing his wild oats" until he metamorphoses into his species' final, fully-aquatic state. His doctors still question whether or not he will make that final change due to his sterility.

While Lan was not the victim of any particularly strong discrimination, there is a sense of unease between him and his family. His inability to reproduce excludes him from many of his species' shared experiences and, as a result, tends to feel slightly uncomfortable around fellow Selkies. He does, however, have a good relationship with his mother. She often jokes that his sterility is a blessing. Because he can't reproduce, he's one less horny, young Selkie she has to prevent from seducing tourists.

Lan applied to and was accepted to the Academy at the young age of 17. He spent four years receiving his basic Star Fleet training before choosing to apply to medical school and focus on emergency medicine and trauma psychology. He graduated from the Academy after six years of medical school (ten counting his undergraduate work) and was assigned to the USS Dragon, a Zeus Class cruiser attached to the 2nd Fleet and under the command of Captain Chell Broht. At the same time, another medical midshipman, this one an internalist, would be assigned to the Dragon. Lan and Midshipman Carew would become fast friends in no time.

Lan spent one year aboard the USS Dragon, reaching the rank of Ensign in that time. While aboard, he saw no shortage of action along the Romulan border and honed his skills as an emergency physician. His Chief Medical Officer, Lieutenant Wendy You, would mention in many of his reports how capable the young officer was in dire situations where he was often undersupplied and working without sufficient support. These reports drew the attention of Star Fleet Command and ultimately led to his reassignment to the USS Columbia.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Emergency Medicine
Academy Minor(s): Trauma Psychology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Lan spends as much time in the water as possible, but also enjoys holo-novels based on 20th and 21st century fantasy novels. A particular favorite of his is the Game of Thrones series by George RR Martin. He also plays piano.
Short-Term Goals: Integrate into the crew of the Columbia
Long-Term Goals: Become Chief Medical Officer; find a deeper understanding of the genetic defect that led to his sterility
Personality: Lan is gregarious and eager to please. While he can be shy around members of his own species, he is empowered by the relative novelty he represents as one of the few Pacificans serving in Star Fleet.
Sense of Humor: Bubbly. Lan laughs often and easily.
Phobias: While perhaps not a genuine phobia, Lan is made uncomfortable by the thought of arid planets with little or no water.
Likes: Water, socializing, working as a doctor
Dislikes: Failing to save a patient, people who are stand-offish
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Lan finds "fish" jokes to be a bit tiring when they are constantly directed toward him.
Bad Habits or Vices: He sometimes struggles to keep his hands still, constantly tapping them against his thighs, desk, or miming through surgical procedures. An Academy advisor suggested taking up the piano and Lan has greatly enjoyed pursuing that hobby.
Achievements: During a mission, the USS Dragon was attacked by Romulan terrorists just on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone. Many of the medical officers were trapped in the holodeck, mid training module, and Lan was left with only one other medic, his good friend Gareth in Sickbay to deal with the influx of casualties.
Disappointments: Lan still finds himself disappointed by his inability to have children. His three sisters have all been extremely fruitful and have large broods on Pacifica.
Illnesses: No major illnesses beyond the uncertain cause of his sterility
Strengths: Analytical, intelligent, kind, personable
Weaknesses: Can be distracted at times
Fears: Not leaving a mark on the world, failure as a medical practitioner
Prejudices: Tends to be a bit dismissive of monogamous relationships in other species. The concept of mating for life is not one he understands as a Pacifican.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: When in his quarters, Ialanto (or "Lan" as he is called by friends and family) is generally nude, enjoying time in his aquatically reconfigured quarters. When out in the ship proper, he wears his Star Fleet uniform or what could be compared to a wetsuit with no sleeves, reaching mid-calf. Due to the fact that he is still in his amphibious stage, he does not yet require a hydration suit, but is more comfortable when he can periodically rehydrate in his specially designed quarters. NOTE, however, that Pacificans, or as they’re colloquially known, “Selkies” undergo a major metamorphoses after their peak years of sexual fertility. Born amphibious and able to spend expended periods of time both in and out of water, around the age of 35 their lung atrophies, becoming an air sac, and they become solely aquatic. Most of body fat is lost, females lose their breasts, and they are no longer able to reproduce during this period. From this time onward, they become reliant on hydration suits when working out of water.
Distinguishing Features: Like all Selkies or Pacificans, Lan is covered with smooth scales and has a crest-like fin running from where the hairline would begin on most humans and running to the small of his back. His scales range in color from cerulean to cobalt blue, interspersed with teal and other shades of green. Both his hands and feet are webbed, though not as extensively as members or his species who have undergone heir post-reproductive metamorphosis to exclusively aquatic beings.
Pets: A bioluminescent Pacifican anemone named Carl
Friends: Gareth Carew, medical officer posted aboard the USS Dragon
