Personal History

Richard was born to Aiden and Astra, their real names at birth being Thomas Lincoln and Sara McClane respectively. After his parents were married they discovered paganism and adopted it as their way of life, to the point where they changed their names following a ritual called handfasting. The particular sect they were part of was friendly enough and did everything together, such as inhale some kinds of intoxicants. They also tended to live on encampments, both regular and ad hoc, hence the reason why Richard could not claim anywhere to be his hometown. His parents tried to push that life onto their son, but as he got older he rejected most of it and often rebelled to the point where his relationship with his parents was fractured.

Eventually, the young Richard was sent off to live with his Aunt and Uncle, both of whom made his life reasonably comfortable, but he always would feel that he was an inconvenience. When the time came for Lincoln to head out alone, it was the happiest time he’d ever known.

The Neptunes Reach

Dick worked a few different jobs, which he considered to be dead ends, but it was his choice to be where he was and that freedom was what he yearned. A year or so later he met with crew members from the freighter Neptune’s Reach, specifically a woman called Jenna Brocksby, she was the top engineer of the ship. Several hours of discussions about the life later and the young Lincoln was infected with the desire to roam the stars. He was able to secure employment on board the Neptune’s Reach, with a recommendation from Jenna, the two became fast friends. His duties were made up work in engineering, piloting and how to defend the ship and its cargo when on drop-offs. Being that the crew was small in comparison to that of a starship, it was expected that in addition to a crewman’s own job, that they had an understanding of other areas. Jenna and Richard worked closely together, with the former bestowing her knowledge of engineering onto him. He came to consider Jenna as his best friend, he was the closest person in his life and probably the only one who knew him well.

For the most part, he had been reclusive, though he had never realised that until he joined the freighter crew. Even then he wasn’t with a huge number of people. Another friend was Tommy Matkins, a married father two girls, who Dick would socialise with fairly often.

Another thing Richard did, was to cook meals for a large group and that was perhaps the only thing he took away from his origins at the pagan camps. It was something of a passion of his. For birthdays he would make the effort to make the persons favourite meal. Life was good and the atmosphere on the freighter was one of closeness and one of a family setting it seemed, something that Richard had not been accustomed to for some time previously. The runs were usually lengthy, depending on where they were heading, which allowed time to get to know his space family.

Visiting the spaceports sparked some interest within, it introduced an element of fascination with different cultures, some were better than others in terms of being friendly. There was one thing that most of the ports had in common, something that proved to be an undoing of Richards. Gambling establishments and not all were above board. Richard developed an addiction to gambling, stogie smoking and getting himself into financial difficulties.

During one of the infrequent visits back to Earth, Dick secured a loan to consolidate his debts from an official source, all in an attempt to sort his life out once and for all. However, the path was not quick and easy, the demon known as addiction was still chasing and tempting him.

During a run to Tau Ceti, the freighter was attacked by an unidentified vessel and at one point it looked as though all was lost. The Neptune’s Reach took severe damage leaving some sections of the ship to be abandoned and/or sealed off to save the ship from destruction. Richard was working in the accommodation area with Tommy, they moved to escort the Matkins family to the protection shelter situated at the galley. A disruptor blast rattled the ship and caused a burning metal beam to fall from the corridor ceiling, which struck Richard down and pinned him, though he was quickly freed by Tommy. They’d just about made it to the disaster shelter when they were forced to cross a breach in the deck, they were forced to shimmy along the edge of the hole. Mrs Matkins, the children and then Richard. Tommy had insisted his injured friend went first, it was a decision that cost the Matkins family a high price. The ship was jolted by another weapons blast and Tommy was unable to sustain a grip, which resulted in him plummeting into the hole and a raging fire two decks below. The attacking vessel eventually broke off its attack and retreated, owing to the approach of a Federation starship, which was answering the call for assistance that was sent from the Neptune’s Reach.

Those who were injured were treated on the Star Fleet vessel, the USS Hastings, including the distraught Richard Lincoln. The medical staff were about to use a dermal regenerator to fix Lincoln's burn, but the latter stopped them and insisted on keeping the scar. The scar was a reminder of sacrifice, friendship and he felt was his payment for surviving.

The Neptunes Reach was to be out of service for several months, that meant pay was cut down to half and as such Lincoln was left with more financial difficulty, that necessitated the search for a new job.

The Freighter Endeavor Lincoln gained employment on another freighter, Donald McHenry, the Captain of the ship, gave him a post as one of the ship's pilots. The new position was alright, but it was not the same and he missed his adopted family. But again, trouble was waiting around the corner and inevitably it pounced on Richard a year later, that time it was in the form of redundancy and subsequent unemployment. Donald decided to retire and sell up following a routine service of the Endeavor, which caused the ship's demise as she was no longer spaceworthy, not without a fortune being spent on repairs.

As much as he liked tinkering with ship systems, as he had done on the Neptunes Reach, his new job was just about always piloting in some form or another. Richard found that he liked it, the feeling of power at his fingers tips was a buzz.

Star Fleet

The Academy

The out of work freight worker was able to pay off some of his debts, but unfortunately not all and therefore some of the debt was still very much an issue. He worked a variety of small jobs and tried to make ends meet, but some didn’t or couldn’t last for whatever the reason. He was fired from one bar job for striking a patron, in an act of self-defence, after the alien patron lost his temper after too much consumption of alcohol and lashed out. There was no criminal charge but his employment was gone and the debt was still there.

At one of the loose ends, he found himself at, Richard came across an advert for Star Fleet and looked into that organisation as a choice for employment. But he’d never considered it as a choice of career, not until the ‘Day of the Flyer’ as he came to call it.

Upon application, he undertook the aptitude tests and was successful in being accepted for officer training, which came as a surprise to him, especially since he would have happily accepted a role in the enlisted service of Star Fleet.

Richard gave his education and training his maximum effort, though the mental side proved to be something of a trial for him. The temptation to quit kept jumping out in front of him and urged him to get a grip on reality. A way to unwind was physical training, something which was actually alright at doing and would become a hobby to him.

USS Copernicus, GSC-9035
Straight out of the Academy, Richard was sent to the USS Copernicus as a Junior Tactical Officer. He was often worried about his performance and felt he was too old to be there, as many of the crew were younger than him. During his only mission on the Science Vessel, Richard gave his best and continued his studying. Eventually, he came to feel he would be happier in Security, he was enjoying studying law, and he gave himself a focus. This coincided with the Copernicus being decommissioned at the end of the mission, which didn't really hit him hard, but he felt some of the longer serving officers were emotionally affected.

USS Iwo Jima, CA-1972
With his change of focus approved, Richard was posted to the USS Iwo Jima, a heavy cruiser as an Ensign. He continued to study hard with security procedures and Federation law; he didn't regret his decision to change his focus one bit. His time on the new ship was good, and his grades were good, as were his appraisals. It wasn't long before he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade; everything seemed to be going in the right direction for him. Though he had to admit to himself as missing the Copernicus, his first assignment, not something that he had anticipated being his service on the ship was only short.
The time came again and Richard was once again posted to a new assignment; that time it was to the USS Charon, a brand new vessel. Only time would tell how good the experience would be.

USS Charon, RSV-88003
With his debts now a thing of the past and hopefully his gambling addiction kicked, Richard moved to his new post with a refreshed enthusiasm and hoped to settle in and stay put for a while...
