Personal History

Born to Deaf parents in the New York metro area, Liliana was quickly diagnosed with the same genetic abnormality that rendered her deaf. Her parents were adamantly opposed to correcting what they saw as a perfectly normal thing and so refused to treat her deafness. Her childhood was spent inside a large Deaf community where she communicated primarily with sign language except for hearing relatives who insisted on her learning how to communicate orally in preparation for being integrated into the larger world. She received implants at around 15 years old after talking with family, doctors, and a therapist about her desires to be able to fit better in the hearing world as she grew older. They took well, but it took years for her to get used to the sound and learn how to speak without as much of a "deaf accent". She ended up preferring going without them when possible, retaining sign language as her primary form of communication.

Lily, as she ended up being called by hearing relatives and friends, turned out to be quite adept at learning and picked up a life-long habit of reading from an early age. Her mother was a chef so she started with her mother's recipes while helping her cook at home before getting around to her father's books, which dealt largely with fixing various older machines and classic science fiction books. This did lead to some interest in disassembling and reassembling things around the house, but she grew more interested in putting together model starships and stations. She explored the stars through the lens of the science fiction books she read before moving on to reading about the cosmos through magazines and old textbooks. Liliana was always more interested in traveling among the stars than in merely studying them, though, and in putting together the starships necessary to do it.

Her social life thrived within the Deaf community. Lily grew up closely with a neighboring girl, Renee Kavanagh, and the two of them ended up sharing similar interests in the stars above them. Renee was far more interested in the way the stars moved than Lily ended up being so while she helped Lily with the model starships, she told Lily about whatever she learned from her own reading and the two would pretend they were members of a starship crew along with other neighborhood kids. The two were inseperable throughout the school years and their friendship culminated into a budding romance before they graduated from schooling. The crucible of young adulthood put a strain on that relationship and it ended in the summer after graduation as both Renee and Liliana decided to take a yearlong trip around the world. It never quite recovered the romance, but the friendship still survives to this day.

The year after graduation, Lily went on a trip exploring the world outside of New York. She ended up going much of it alone, but found it a fulfilling set of experiences nonetheless. She explored the North American continent almost from coast to coast and went on a months-long trek backpacking throughout Europe, parts of South America, and the Middle East. Aside from the memories, Liliana brought back a sense of longing for a lifetime of seeking out these new experiences, a love of tasting food from different cultures, and ultimately, a sense that her home couldn't be considered simply the New York area anymore. She signed up for Starfleet Academy within weeks of returning and managed to pass the admissions exam, though not as easily as she would have liked.

It was the start of something new, for sure. For the first time, Lily found herself wholly submerged in an environment that for all its diversity, seemingly lacked a cohesive Deaf community. That meant she had to rely on her implants more and her discomfort at being immersed in sound for so long wore her out. She retreated to her studies as time went on, taking on the loneliness as the price to pay for keeping her sanity and her grades. Those that pierced that loneliess were few and far between and dwindled as she progressed further into her studies. It only enhanced that ache for a place that felt like home again as she got closer to graduation.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Mechanical & Astronautics Engineer
Academy Minor(s): Astronomy
Hobbies and Pastimes: Star-gazing, cooking, model starships
Short-Term Goals: Find a place to belong, one that feels like home.
Long-Term Goals: Play a part in designing a new ship or modify an existing one
Personality: Cheery, but quiet. Years from not feeling fully included in the social fabric of the Academy as well as the rigors of Engineering studies dampened a naturally outgoing and emotive personality and put up a shell that allowed her to feel comfortable keeping most people at arm's length. It's a personality change she dislikes, but isn't quite sure how to "fix" yet.
Sense of Humor: Sarcastic, mildly dark
Phobias: Heights, surgeries
Likes: Books, food, and the thrill of something new
Dislikes: Crowds, cramped spaces
Pet Peeves or Gripes: feeling like others are treating her differently because of her deafness
Bad Habits or Vices: Cooking and eating when she's anxious.
Achievements: She's won a pie eating contest.
Disappointments: The lack of feeling a sense of real belonging once she was out of the Deaf community.
Illnesses: No major illnesses.
Strengths: Adept and eager to learn, willingness to do the job no matter how dirty
Weaknesses: Being the only Deaf student she's aware of at the Academy has led to a sense of isolation from her peers, leaving her hungry for ending that.
Fears: Not belonging anywhere except in the Deaf community
Prejudices: None that she's aware of
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Either t-shirts or plaid or flannel shirts with rolled up sleeves, jeans. Bright colors.
Distinguishing Features: A pair of small implants behind her ears with the right one being slightly bigger
Pets: Sara, rat terrier mix. Trained to assist her with sound awareness when off duty.
Friends: Renee Kavanagh

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The period immediately after getting her implants. A suddent introduction of sound into a soundless world forced her to relearn how to interact with the world.
Best Time: The gap year she took with Renee traveling the world before entering the Academy.
Most Crucial Experience: The comedown after the gap year. She ended up realizing home didn't feel like home anymore.
Role Model: Geordi La Forge, Montgomery Scott
