Lieutenant commander is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations. Lieutenant commanders normally serve as senior department heads, first officers on smaller vessels, and in some cases as starship commanders.
By the 22nd century, lieutenant commander had apparently become defunct and was not used in the Earth Star Fleet. A century later, in the early 2260s, Lieutenant Commander was being used by the Federation Star Fleet.
Ranks equivalent to lieutenant commander exist in many other space fleets. The Romulan equivalent is Arrain; the Klingon equivalent is Sogh.
The insignia was at first the same as that of lieutenant, but by 2266 had developed into its own design. During the 23rd century, certain Lieutenant Commanders holding high shipboard positions, such as that of First Officer, were authorized to wear the full braid insignia of a Commander while still retaining their rank of Lieutenant Commander. Currently, rank pips for lieutenant commander are two solid pips and one hollow pip, worn on the collar.

- All players are capped at the rank of Lieutenant Commander until they take on a command role (FO or CO), or are approved for the rank of full Commander by the CinC on the recommendation of their Commanding Officer.
