Personal History
Kailani Leigh grew up the youngest of four children to Fara and Rainuin Leigh, owners of an aapua fruit farm and tourist destination on Risa. With three older brothers, Kailani had to quickly learn to play rough and tumble or end up with a lot of bruises. She picked up most of her brother's hobbies, mostly spending time outside in the dirt. By the time she was thirteen, Kailani was helping her oldest brother Teuilan restore antique farm equipment.
Kailani had a difficult time relating to the kids her own age, and she ended up spending more time with her brothers and their friends. They did their best to include her, but even then Kailani felt left out. She also spent a lot of time helping her parents out around the plantation. She particularly enjoyed giving plantation tours and meeting all sorts of people who came to the tourist spot, making a list of all the planets she wanted to one day visit.
In school Kailani excelled in physics, quickly standing out from her peers. She was offered entrance to the prestigious Vulcan Science Institute, but instead Kailani that she wanted to act on her longtime goal of visiting the planets of the tourists she'd met. Setting her sights on Star Fleet, Kailani continued her studies long distance while at the same time studying for the Academy's entrance exams. It took her two tries before she passed the exams and was accepted into the Engineering Division. While there she became good friends with classmate Julia Nielson, and in their second year the put in the request to become roommates. Though she wasn't the top of her class, Kailani's often hands-on approach to engineering was noticed by the Corps of Engineers.
Upon her graduation, the Corps flagged her for the Emergency Services department. Based out of Utopia Planitia, the Corps Emerg team was often dispatched to tackle immediate and high priority engineering problems. Kailani often found herself dispatched to Federation worlds in order to shore up their system-wide defenses and repair key satellites and planetary infrastructure following the First General War. The job excited her; as an emergency responder Kailani not only go to see many Federation worlds, but also got to work with the people who lived there.
After a few years serving in this capacity, Kailani was reassigned to the Interdivisional Services department of the Corps and promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. The position kept her station-side aboard Starbase 105 for most of the time. It was definitely a change of pace, and Kailani met some good people there, including then Lieutenant Nathan Balko. The two shared a casual relationship until Balko was promoted to Chief Science Officer of the USS Constance.
With nothing to keep her aboard SB105, Kailani requested a transfer to active starship duty. The Borg Invasion broke out then, and the Corps instead move Kailani to the Archimedes Shipyards. There she oversaw teams in the installation of secondary warp cores aboard the new starships that were being built in response to the Borg threat. At the end of the war Kailani was promoted to full Lieutenant.
The invasion over, and the yearning for active starship duty still alive, Kailani again requested a transfer. She was snapped up as Chief Engineer aboard the USS Osiris. While she enjoyed this position, Kai often wondered if the Osiris' first officer had something against her, since she was rarely assigned to away missions. After three years in the engine room and feeling stifled, Kailani made the decision to take a leave of absence from Star Fleet and return home.
Much had changed at her parent's farm, but Kai still felt like she'd come home. She helped her parents upgrade many of the factory systems there, which was an interesting change of pace for her. Still, her favourite thing to do on the plantation was lead tour groups of tourists. Kailani enjoyed being home on Risa, being surrounded by her fellow Risians who understood subtleties of their culture. It was a refreshing change, but the call of the stars was still strong, and Kailani ended her leave early when the Corps of Engineers came calling. She did tell herself, though, that she would make more trips home than she had in the past.
The Corps wanted Kailani to join their Special Operations department, tackling engineering problems that were too large or difficult for a regular starship's engineering crew to handle. She was to be the team's structural engineering specialist. Kailani found she enjoyed the position immensely, being able to travel the Federation and get her hands on interesting technology. It wasn't long before she was promoted to full Commander.
Three years in to serving in SpecOps, the opportunity to lead her own team came about. Kailani was offered the position of team leader aboard the USS Adams, a vessel dedicated solely for the use of the SpecOps team. Kailani jumped at the chance, and with the position came the promotion to Captain and being made First Officer of the Adams. The team made several breakthroughs with Krynar technology.

Most Painful Experience: The Borg Invasion was a scary time, with so many Star Fleet personnel being assimilated.
Best Time: The leave of absence she took from the Fleet. It made Kailani realise how important her home is to her, and helped to renew her confidence in herself.
