Personal History

Born May 17 to proud parents Vincent and Mary Legace, Balin spent most of his life like many other Star Fleet officers children... alone. His mother was a chief medical officer on Earth, but was stationed mostly at the San Francisco Stardock, while his father was assigned as chief Science officer aboard the USS Rome for the better part of his career. Never one to complain, and easily able to befriend fellow schoolmates, Balin quickly became known as the "class-clown" in his Santa Clara elementary School. During this time his father, Dr. Vincent Legace, had become renown in the weapons and technology world and was able to convince Mary to retire and open a practice on the planet, near their original home of Dublin.

At the age 6, Balin's father returned home from a 5-year tour to study a new weapon in development modified from found Borg technology. During this period Balin's other siblings were born. Balin was the first and was 6 years apart from his older brother. He and was quickly followed by the twins, Catherine and Vincent. Balin grew close to his siblings as any brother would, but became almost a father-figure in their lives because of the large age difference and his fathers absence.

It was during this time Balin's father had made great strides on his weapon research and was once again reassigned to his old ship, the USS Rome to "test" his technology. Against his wife's wishes and his better judgement, he thought he should be the one to test his weapon out and would not trust the operation in the hands of another. Once aboard the Rome they set course for an unknown destination.

The USS Rome wasn't heard from for many years, and by now Balin Legace was a 17 year old young man. He pleaded with his mother to let him go to the Science Academy in London, but she disaproved of his intentions feeling he was only doing it because of his fathers chosen profession, and not because that was his true wish. She never thought Balin had much of an interest in Science, and in fact she was correct, he was more interested in weapon design and astronomy.

Finally, after many years, the Rome returned. A small-ish man came to the door while Balin was in his bedroom and told Mary a bit of bad news, mentioning a tragedy that had befallen. Apparently the weapon her husband had been working on, which they still could not disclose any information on, had malfuntioned and left the Rome adrift in an unknown energy field where minutes turned to years. It was by the sacrifice of Dr. Vincent Legace that the ship was able to finally regain power and find it's way home. The how and why were never answered. This devastated Mary, who didn't know how she would tell the children, but to Balin this became his final motivation to leave. Recording a quick video to his mother to say his goodbye, he escaped through the backdoor and made his way toward his future, Star Fleet Academy, with his best friend Jerry Bailey.

Once enlisted, Balin signed up for the Science department, but realized quickly his mother was correct. He became enthralled and eventually obsessed by the Tactical side of a starship, and immediately changed his course of study to Tactical and Security Training, where he excelled and bypassed all of his goals. Balin also took a minor in pschology, always believing himself to be a good judge of character and deduced the classes would help get inside peoples heads so he can better understand his enemies.
