Personal History

Early Life

Ixion was born in San Francisco on Earth as the son of a Starfleet officer and civilian scientist. As he grew, his father, the Starfleet officer, was reassigned to a position on Starbase Alpha as a command assistant in the fleet office. His mother, meanwhile, had been offered a faculty appointment at Stanford University in chemical engineering.

Ixon’s childhood was a happy one, with a few interesting trips to some off world locations with his parents on business trips. In school, he particularly excelled in mathematics and the sciences. As he grew into high school, Ixion, or "X", by his friends (sometimes Nix, if they were trying to be clever) seriously considered immediately joining Starfleet Academy. However, after some major deliberation, and an undergraduate offer from the University of Chicago, he elected to go to receive an undergraduate degree. He entered University of Chicago at the age of 17.

University of Chicago and Beyond

Ixion spent the next four years at the University of Chicago. During that time, Ixion focused on an interdisciplinary degree focused on chemistry and devices. Ixion first recognized his interest in devices and, in particular, chemical sensors for long range astronomical phenomenon during a project in his Junior year. This project was geared with integrating a complex sensor device into a shuttlecraft provided by Starfleet Academy. Ixion and his team worked tirelessly for three months developing the sensors. At the end of the competition, Ixion and his team managed to really learn how the sensors operated and ways-- even if minimal-- to improve them.

After Ixion graduated at 21 from the University of Chicago, he interned at the Daystrom Institute over the summer. During his stint at the Daystrom Institute, the workers all encouraged Ixion to pursue a career in Starfleet, and though Ixion was intrigued, he did not act, instead, accepting an offer for Graduate Studies in Applied Sciences and Engineering at Stanford University. Ixion chose to attend Stanford due to the program’s focus and closeness to the Daystrom Institute and connections with Starfleet Science.

He spent the next four years at Stanford University and graduated at 25 with a Ph.D in Analytical Chemistry with his Ph.D thesis on the subject of Rapid Identification of Interstellar Phenomenon. His research had mainly focused on implementing and researching new chemical methods for the identification of matter on a lightyear scale, thus improving the sensitivity and selectivity of current sensor methods.

Unsurprisingly, as he finished, Ixion was recruited by the Daystrom Institute and Starfleet Science Institute again. He accepted a post-doctoral research position with the Daystrom institute and remained there for his term of 1.5 years. At the end of his tenure at the Daystrom Institute, he was recruited and offered a fleet position with Starfleet Science.

This time though, Ixion accepted, and he was assigned and given a fleet commission as Ensign with the Starfleet Science institute.

Starfleet Science Institute

Ixion began his Starfleet career at the age of 27. In order to serve as an Ensign on Starbase Alpha he was first tasked, and worked for about a year on the implementation of a large scale upgrade in the sensor net across the fleet. During this time, Ixion was also required to attend Starfleet training scenarios, which were required of all Academy graduates. Even though he had been granted an officer rank, he was still required to complete the necessary command background and officer training protocols. During that next year, he worked on the sensor net upgrade during the day and went to the Academy in San Francisco at night, working with a Starfleet Command Academy instructor-- Lieutenant Commander Smith. After he finished that project, he was “pending assignment” and promoted to a Lieutenant Junior Grade for his expert work on the subject. At that time, he was reassigned to a development team with Starfleet Command and the Starfleet Intelligence Corps. They had asked for him specifically to oversee the sensors and science facilities aboard a project only known to Ixion as C. It was on this project he met an Intelligence coordination officer, Ikaru Tan who became one of his best friends. He continued to work on the project for another year and completed his designs of the sensor and laboratory space for the ship when he was abruptly reassigned to Starbase Bravo and promoted to full Lieutenant.

His reassignment remained a mystery for many months, but Ixion eventually discovered that a new design chief from Intelligence had recently become free and asked to take the reins of the project. Apparently, this move made sense, given her extra credentials. And though Ixion was unhappy with the move, he decided that this was an opportunity for him to try something else. At his next move, he requested a ship assignment, moving him, for the first time in his career-- out of the laboratory.

Ixion was assigned to the USS Rhea Silvia, a small scientific vessel as the third science officer in command.

USS Rhea Silvia

As an officer on the Rhea Silvia, Ixion flourished. He remained on the Rhea Silvia for two missions, and during that time, Ixion began to learn the “ways” of the fleet officer. Initially, he found that while interaction (and still does to some extent) with the other members of the science crew was easy, he was not gifted with social skills for those not in a scientific field. As a science officer, he was still able to spend much of this time in a laboratory, focused on his optimization of sensors with the difference analytes the Rhea Silvia discovered. At the end of his tenure on the Rhea Silvia, Ixion was offered a more prestigious First Officer position with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander, on the USS Sophocles.

USS Sophocles

The Sophocles was a slightly different ship, larger than before. Again, Ixion found some difficulty in communicating with his fellow crew. He also found, for the first time since his initiation into Starfleet that he was not able to spend time in a laboratory. Though at first this bothered Ixion, he soon grew to like his position. The Sophocles was still a scientific ship and much more able to help him grow with his personnel skills.

Ixion was able to remain in the position of First Officer for approximately a year and a half until disaster struck. During a routine encounter with a sun corona measurement, the Sophocles’s shield generator failed and was nearly destroyed until Ixion and the rest of the senior staff intervened and managed to jumpstart the ship’s engines and move the ship out of sun. After the incident though, the damage had been done. Five of the Sophocles’s crew had been killed, including her Captain.

Lieutenant Commander Latro took command of the 50 person ship and served as its commanding officer for the next year and a half.

During that long year and a half mission, Ixion grew up. He had become proficient enough in the ways of Starfleet and headed many interesting scientific missions-- though diplomatic scope was narrow, Ixion did have one uninentional diplomatic encounter. Ixion’s first diplomatic trial by fire occurred by the routine examination of an emission nebulae in the Gamma Irridia cluster. The Sophocles had decided to map the nebulae, which was approximately 10 light years in diameter with a few experimental upgrades to the compositional analysis tools present on the Sophocles. Unknown to the crew, their nebulae probing was disrupting the ship electronics of a Ferengi trader passing through the system. The trader ship appeared to take great offense to the ship disruptions, mistaking the electronics malfunctions as an attack and opened fire on the Sophocles. At that point, Ixion had two choices, he could try to retaliate or attempt to make the situation right. Ixion contacted the Ferengi ship and began to try to reason with the crew. Initially, the were not receptive with Ixion and his attempts to explain reason. The Ferengi crew couldn’t understand why one would care about a nebulae and even less why their sensors and systems would be effected. Ixion continued, trying to explain with the Ferengi about the situation and eventually was able to come to a tenuous compromise with the ship’s Daimon. Ixion agreed to trade information and goods with the Ferengi, which was apparently what they were after anyways-- though extracting the information required the application of several of Ixion’s finest and completely illegal bottles of Romulan ale.

First bridge aside, he and the Sophocles continued to explore the sector and managed to discover a primitive bipedal lifeform which resembled the early development of the human race in their paleolithic form. Ixion and his crew reported the results of the discovery and sent word to Starfleet Science as a possible candidate for an observation post.

After a very short shoreleave on Earth, the Sophocles embarked on its final assigned mission before decomissioning, and though Ixion was sad at the prospect of the ship’s last mission-- he was excited at the prospects of what was to come. He and his ship were assigned to help the Ktarian homeworld work on their climate monitoring system which was having some major malfunctions-- causing massive and unpredictable snow storms in the tropical environment with extremely large shifts in temperature. The climate system was suffering-- as the crew discovered-- from an improperly calibrated sensor net and climate system. The fix was relatively quick-- and Ixion had the time to make some interesting scientific contacts with a few Ktarian scientists who were marine specialists. Finally though-- the fix-- and the next few months were finished Ixion and his crew were set to return to Alpha.

After that point, his assignment on the Sophocles was up and the ship was due for decommission. Starfleet Command had deposited him, after a command training test and promotion to Commander, as a potential First Officer for one of their larger ship assignments. During this time, Ixion also took command diplomacy classes, realizing that it was one of his true weaknesses as a potential candidate. After all, life on a science vessel wasn’t always as glamorous as life on an integrated ship.

After a tenuous few months of leave, Ixion was informed that a Captain was interested in hiring him as a first officer for a newly commissioned heavy cruiser, USS Chin’toka, CA-1357.

USS Chin'toka, CA-1375

Ixion's start to his new tenure on the Chin'Toka was rather ominous. During her maiden voyage the ship was hijacked and Ixion, in his attempt to regain control of the ship with the help of Commander Fiore was incapacitated. By the time he awoke in sickbay, the ship had been righted and everything was back to normal.

On the start of the Chin'toka's first real shakedown mission though, things began to look slightly better for Latro. On the maiden voyage, despite some issues integrating with the transfer crew of the Philadelphia, Ixion headed up a group which was sent to record a distress call from the USS Halifax. The USS Halifax had been attacked by an unknown assailant and escaped, leaving the ship without power or ability to move. The Chin'toka away team was assigned to repair the damage to the ship and recover what information they could from the ship's sensor logs. Upon recovery of the sensor logs, Ixion found that the Halifax had been struck with a field modulation which had drained her power, though initially he was at a loss to ascertain the exact reasons for the power loss.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Did not attend Starfleet Academy
Academy Minor(s): Did not attend Starfleet Academy
Hobbies and Pastimes: Laboratory research, musical instruments, reading
Short-Term Goals: To increase his ability to communicate non-scientifically.
Long-Term Goals: To obtain another command.
Personality: Ixion’s personality is quirky-- he really is a geek at heart. He loves to talk about really unusual topics, though doesn’t feel exceptionally comfortable communicating with officers in tactical or security. Much of what Ixion knows comes from the world of the sciences.
Sense of Humor: Ixion’s sense of humor has the potential to be off-putting if you don’t know him-- he is willing to joke around, but knows when to stop and be serious usually.
Phobias: He hates to disappoint others. Ixion has also had difficultly with public speaking to people with diverse backgrounds. He has a tendency to tense up and talk in a monotonous tone and start talking in his scientific jargon.
Likes: Ixion enjoys reading, music (specifically guitar), biking, climbing, and running. He also enjoys playing 2D chess (though can rarely get anyone to play with him)
Dislikes: The surefire way to get on Ixion’s bad side is to cheat. Otherwise, he is fairly easy going.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Ixion does not appreciate people who decide to take the “easy” way out. He believe that it shows a lack of caring about their own work.
Bad Habits or Vices: He will occasionally bite his fingernails.
Achievements: Ph.D. from Stanford University; Integration with Starfleet; Temporary command of the Sophocles
Disappointments: The single biggest disappointment in Ixion’s career is that he no longer has much time to spend in the laboratory.
Illnesses: No major
Strengths: Mentally, Ixion’s strengths are his ability to problem solve and his comprehensive knowledge of the sensors and chemical sensing on ships.
Weaknesses: Ixion has never been able to effectively communicate with the non-scientific for an extended period of time. Either he makes process and gets excited and uses terminology and topics which are too confusing, or he decides to take the process on a much to basic level and looses audience for lack of attention. He is working on this problem-- and found some success with Starfleet training, however, he still has this tendency when he becomes nervous or excited.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: T-shirts with “geeky” graphics on them
Distinguishing Features: None
Pets: None
Friends: Ikar Tan

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Ixion’s most painful experience occurred during the crisis on the Sophocles. He was not able to save his Captain from the explosions on ship-- and though he and the others were able to bring the ship out of the sun, Ixion never forgave himself for the loss of his Commanding Officer.
Best Time: Ixion really found what he wanted to do when he was researching aboard the Rhea Silvia. During that time, Ixion found a harmonious balance between the academic and scientific life he had experienced during graduate school and the thrill of exploration life in Starfleet provided.
Most Crucial Experience: Ixion’s most crucial period of development which catalyzed his Starfleet career happened while he was a post-doctoral research assistant with the Daystrom Institute. It was there that Ixion realized that he wanted to experience more than just life on Earth. He wanted to be able to see the universe and do good in the process. The staff at the Daystrom Institute encouraged his path and got him in touch with people from Starfleet Science to start his path.
Role Model: After serving under his CO on the Sophocles, Ixion decided that as a member of the command staff, he wanted to treat his crew exactly the same way his former Captain did. While the man had somewhat limited experience with science of Ixion’s variety, he was receptive to different ideas, held “forums” as meetings, and never disregarded a possibility without irrefutable evidence.
