Personal History

Marcus Lane was born to family that owned a very prosperous transportation company in Chicago. Growing up he was groomed to take over the family business, learning business and logistics and management.

In his early twenties he was put on a small company vessel as an observer and support personnel with his close childhood friends, also from high-up families in the company. When the crew showed that they could handle themselves they were given some of the smaller negotiations and interplanetary transport assignments. The plan was to get them some experience with the hands on aspects of the transportation company. Over the several years of space faring Marcus picked up a bit of everything on board ship.

Eventually, as youth can, the crew started seeing how much leeway they had in performing their assignments. When it became too much their parents, they were brought home and told that they needed to learn disciple and duty, and that "apparently it was too early." So they were sent to Star Fleet. For his technical skills Marcus made a fine engineering candidate, and so he did, excelling in all his classes.

And so he finds himself, some what unwilling, in Star Fleet, but very excited about what it could mean for his life. He dreams of all the places he will see, and people he will interact with. So much waits just out of eye sight.

First Assignment, USS Gettysburg, BC-1863

The Barzan Wormhole

Marcus walked into action on his first assignment aboard the battle cruise Gettysburg. When the ship collided with a cloaked Romulan scout ship, causing considerable damage, in the Barzan system.

It turned out a group of Barzans were using the ship to study the Barzan wormhole, which had become increasingly unstable. While trying to repair the damage, and using some parts salvaged from the Romulan scout the group of Barzans aboard the scout showed themselves to be a radical religious sect, and were trying to free their god from the wormhole, which had been causing the destabilization.

With the help of one of the Barzans, who didn’t agree with the others’ methods, he was able to get the engines working again, and defeat a booby trap that had been set on the systems on the ship.

They returned the dissidents to the Barzan homeworld, and limped home on jury rigged systems.

Afterwards, Marcus was promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, a step made into a kind of honor, by the First Officer, newly promoted Commander Giordano Santiago giving the gift of his own JG pips, given to him by his former Captain. Pips made of onyx and gold pressed latinum. Marcus wore them with pride from that point. Now he just needs to earn them, and keep earning them. Something that is a little conflict for him.

Second Assignment, USS Gettysburg, BC-1863

Admiral Taxi and Systems Drill

When the Gettysburg was finally repaired it was decided to test her out by travelling to Tellat to pick up Admiral Linden, who’s ship had broken down there. An interesting assignment for a battle cruiser. Captain Fitchel also announced that the transit time would be used to perform a battle drill for the Second Officer and to test all the new holosystems, to check the load on the computer core. Marcus got sent to observe the emergency medical hologram, the oldest and most ironed out holosystem in Star Fleet. It was thought be a fairly easy assignment.

The test started well, the drain on the computer when all the holosystems came online was considerable, but within parameters. In the middle of the test the holodeck, where the medical test was taking place, blinked off of a moment, then came back on, a quarter second behind the rest of the ship.

While Marcus was trying to find out why, suddenly the simulation ended and the Captain called Marcus to the bridge. When he got there he was told he’d received transfer orders to the USS Ticonderoga to take over as Chief Engineer. He had a couple hours to gather his things together to transport to a fast transport that was coming the rendezvous. Marcus was feeling rather smug.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Systems and Propulsion Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Logistics, Operations, Sociology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Basketball, lacrosse, running, competition, socializing
Short-Term Goals: See how many people he can out compete, checking out what Star Fleet really is, besides a pain to commerce
Long-Term Goals: See space, take charge of the family company, redeem himself to his parents
Personality: Friendly, social, gives off a rakish vibe, though sees himself as a complete gentleman, extremely disarming, open; carries an oversized PADD in a satchel at all times
Sense of Humor: Bountiful, anything and everything
Phobias: None that he's found yet
Likes: Good company and a good challenge
Dislikes: Stifling order, stiff people, people who can't take a joke
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Uptight people, not being allowed to take charge of himself
Achievements: Successfully commanded a special transport for three years, among the top in his Academy class
Disappointments: Having his ship taken away, and being forced into Starfleet to "grow up"
Illnesses: None, unless enjoying a good adrenalin rush counts
Strengths: Intelligent, quick mind, in good physical shape, self confident to know what he doesn’t know
Weaknesses: Can chafe under authority if it gets too close, can say the wrong thing at wrong time to try to help
Fears: Being sucked in space with no EVA suit, not being able to take his place in history (family or more)
Prejudices: Still doesn’t really like Starfleet or its personnel, they’ve just gotten in the way several times too many; Vulcans the most up tight people Marcus has ever met
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Khakis and colored polo or collared shirts
Distinguishing Features: Gleaming, disarming smile
Pets: None
Friends: Kenneth Rogers, new Starfleet Tactical Officer. He was the helmsman on Marcus’ ship. They've been through a lot together; from avoiding pirates to less than friendly business dealings. And more mundane things, like good old fashioned fun during downtime, Ken was always there to help, offer support, add excitement.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Being recalled and having his ship taken away while he was being very successful (to his way of thinking), and being sent to Starfleet
Best Time: Down time in transit on the transport
Most Crucial Experience: Getting his ship through a fight with two raiders, and taking care of the resulting damage with the threat of more attacks
Role Model: His many greats-grand father, Faust Lane, who founded the family business back when they used steam engines, and his friend and former partner, Lynn Raul; both showed compassion, but could still stay professional and go after the target
