Personal History

Kurak was born into a typical Klingon family which embraced typical Klingon values. Above all else Kurak embraced his family as a child. He constantly strove to gain his family honor, something that had not been done in generations. As a youth he tried to desperately distinguish himself from the rest of his companions. He was bright, perhaps not much as some of the others in his class. He was able to see things in ways that most of his classmates were not. Not all issues had two sides, not everything was “for the empire” some things that the empire did was a result of the people in charge of the empire.

Kurak entered the Klingon Academy a few years later. There he chose to study in addition with the required combat courses, a path to help him become an Engineer on the Klingon fleet. He did not really know what made him choose that path, but he felt that it was the right decision. During his time in training, he learned a great deal. He became interested in more than just the empire and eventually applied for a cultural exchange program with the United Federation of Planets. He was put on a waiting list and told that it might be several years for his application to be processed. He consented, although he knew that the only reason that the Empire was taking so long is that he was not in a powerful house. Nevertheless, he had a fierce pride for the Klingon Empire. It had stood through so much chaos and turmoil. Finally after a series of tests, one of which part of his face was torn open by a disruptor lance, and left to heal as a battlescar, he was ready for the field.

He served for a few years on the IKS Bloodwine, but really did not make any headway. It was when he was 30 that things started to break Kurak’s way. A position opened at the Klingon Academy for an Engineering instructor, and Kurak thinking that this was the opportunity to finally gain his family some respect applied and was accepted into the position. It was also later that year that Kurak’s papers came through to the Empire, and he was granted a cultural exchange to Star Fleet Command. He would still be a Klingon Officer, but he would have the opportunity to learn about the Federation. He accepted.

The only problem was finding him a commission. Not many Star Fleeters wanted to accept a Klingon Officer who was an instructor at the Klingon Academy, and Star Fleet Academy was not thrilled either. Finally, after some paper signing and a lot of promises, Kurak was accepted as a visiting instructor from the Klingon Empire. He had to go through a brief course at the Academy, then he started to teach ship design, warp field theory, and propulsion theory. Everything was going well until the Klingon Empire broke all contact with the Federation, in essence stranding Kurak in the Federation. He was distraught as much as a Klingon could be. He moved on though, and took up residence in the Federation, although he still asked to not gain citizenship, for one day he hoped that he might be able to return to the Empire.
