The Kobali are a humanoid species from the Vyntadi Expanse, located in the Delta Quadrant.

They are warp-capable, with a technology level comparable to that of Star Fleet. Their medical knowledge is more advanced, however, as they can reanimate someone who has been dead for more than two weeks. Kobali also have high regards for every life, and honor them with the saying, "'Never harbor anger towards those who have brought you death, for they gave you the chance to live again.'"

This species has blue-grayish skin, and hairless heads.
Their internal physiology is quite different from that of Humans, though they appear fairly humanoid.

They also possess unusual tastes in food; meals normally considered delectable by Humans and many humanoids were strongly disliked by Kobali.

Culture

There is not much variety in the Kobali diet; their main food looks like gray paste.
When tasting other foods, it has a metallic flavor to them.

Once a new Kobali is revived from a corpse, he or she will be placed with an adoptive family. Because this is their method of reproduction, the adoptive parents treat their new "child" with as much love and compassion as one would with a biological or adopted child. Still, it and take quite some time for a new Kobali to adjust to the shock of being revived, transformed, and placed in a new family. The Kolabi transformation process helps to ease this transition, as the reanimation also causes memory loss.

Reanimating is a most important part of Kobali culture, though it sometimes leads to conflict with other species' burial customs. The reanimation itself causes extensive memory loss, usually rendering the formerly-deceased person in question with a new and distinct Kobali personality. Some new Kobali, however, do remember parts of their former life, which is referred to as "kyn'steya". There are also some who remember so much of their previous lives that it causes them to escape the Kobali in search of their former lives. Those that do leave are searched for extensively by other Kobali in order to return them. The Kobali do not believe in returning to their own lives, for many of the same reasons the Trill do: it causes too much pain and confusion for all involved, and is not mentally healthy.

Biology

Kobali physiology differs from humans. They have a six-lobed brain and a binary cardiovascular system.

The Kobali form cannot be reversed because there is not enough original DNA present after the alteration to do this. It is, however, possible to change a person's appearance by inaprovaline injection, which needs to be repeated to maintain the life form's previous appearance. This only helps for a short period of time because the Kobali genetic pathogen will undo the changes.

Kobali have a talent for sensing and manipulating wave phenomena. "Vyk'tiote," translated roughly as "crumpled dance," seems to be their specialty.

Reproduction

Kobali do not procreate sexually to get offspring like other species; like the Borg, they collect them.

The Kobali search space in order to salvage dead, sentient lifeforms, which they bring back to their planet and reanimate. Over a period of several months, the DNA of the reanimated lifeform is altered by means of a genetic pathogen that converts most of the DNA into a Kobali protein structure. These biochemical changes affect every part of the body, leaving only trace amounts of the original DNA. After this, the individual in question is given a Kobali name and placed in a Kobali family to help them acclimate. While not generally a hostile species, they are highly possessive of those they considered their own, and believe that once a person is reanimated into one of their species, much like the Trill, it is generally verboten to try and return to their old life.

Reanimating is the most important Kobali custom, which can be of conflict with other species' burial customs when they occasionally meet. Reanimation causes extensive memory loss, though some people will remember parts of their former life, better known as "kyn'steya". They train the newly-reanimated to adapt to their culture and language, which is necessary to help acclimate the new Kobali as he or she adjusts to becoming a member of a new race. It also helps ease the shock of new Kobali finding themselves alive again, albeit in a completely different physiology and culture. There are people who remember their old lives so much that it will drive them to escape in search of rejoining their former life. If and when this happens, the individual will be searched for by other Kobali in order to return them home.

First Contact

The Kobali made first contact with Starfleet in 2376 via the starship USS Voyager.

A team of Kobali was searching for one of their own who had escaped and was trying to get back to Voyager, as she had been a previous crew member on board the ship. The woman did not wish to go back to the Kobali, and wanted to return to her life as a Human Ensign. Tensions between the two ships escalated, and the Kobali ship opened fire on Voyager, insisting the woman's return. Captain Janeway left the decision up to her former crew member, who did eventually decide to return to her Kobali family.

This is the only recorded contact between the Kobali and Starfleet.
